💥The Nebulae:
- Nebulae in the Universe take on shapes very similar to those of our earthly creatures. When we gaze up at the sky on a clear night, we can recognize constellations with familiar patterns, and we can even guess at them, since they've been cradling mankind since the dawn of time. The universe seems both familiar and unknown. Galaxies, nebulae and other astronomical phenomena have long been given animal names. It's human nature to see the familiar in the unfamiliar.
A nebula is an interstellar cloud of gas and dust. Nebulae are one of the ingredients of the Universe, along with stars, planets and galaxies. They play a fundamental role in the history of the cosmos, as it is within them that new stars are formed.
Nebulae play a vital role in the evolution of galaxies. By understanding how nebulae form and evolve, we can better understand the overall evolution of galaxies. Nebulae contain chemical elements that are essential building blocks for planets, stars and life itself. They provide crucial information about the chemistry of the Universe. By collecting data on nebulae and the regions in which new stars are formed, scientists are gathering elements for reconstructing the environment that existed in the early universe. The more distant the nebulae studied, the more the elements gathered help to understand the first stages of cosmic evolution. Exceptional and unique astrophysical phenomena can occur in some of these nebulae. Observing them helps enrich our understanding of the Universe.
There are several types of nebula. The most common are emission nebulae, reflection nebulae and obscure nebulae. Emission nebulae are bright. This is because their atoms are excited by ultraviolet radiation emitted by nearby young stars. The atoms in turn become a source of radiation. Reflection nebulae, on the other hand, emit no radiation themselves. They reflect the luminosity of the nearest stars, even reproducing their color. Dark nebulae, on the other hand, are dense concentrations of light-absorbing dust. They're only visible when there's a light source behind them, from which they can be detached. They're easy to observe, and frequently even visible to the naked eye.
But how were nebulae discovered? And how do they form?
