I found this very interesting, I worked as a kennel maid for a time as a teenager. One of my jobs there was to use a scythe on the grass which the dogs could play on. I sharpened this with a whet stone . I was fifteen, my first job after leaving school. Now I will be seventy next month, This brought back lots of memories.

Grandpa, who passed in the 1960's, cut the yard with a scythe. Every time I see a Grim Reaper I'm reminded of Grandpa. I still have his scythe hanging in the garage, it's in need of sharpening.

I have seen professionals flatten their scythe with a hammer and a special small anvill. In duch we call this 'haren' (hair, meaning making as thin as a hair). This was over 50 years ago and the crafsmen were already nearly pensioned. They were very skillful. Nice video again, I never saw a semi automised machine like this.

Another beautiful restoration! Thanks! Years ago (late '70's) I was a volunteer in US National parks, forests, and Designated Wilderness areas. On one occasion a small fire got started near a grassland area adjacent to a forest, both of which were within the boundaries of a designated Wilderness Area. We needed to cut enough of the tall grass to cut off the fire's path to the forest. Since no motor-driven devices (among many other things) are allowed in a Wilderness we had to cut the grass with large scythes to successfully cut off the fires path. It might have been kind of fun but for the urgency. The scythes? The Ranges kept such tools for just such situations. And razor-sharp!

@briangoldberg44393 жыл бұрын
if i understand the comments below the video, it's not actually for sharpening the scythe, but for flattening the blade after it has become kinked and warped from use. i suppose that such scythes are probably quite thin metal and they easily become dented

This one had me guessing to the end. I used a Scythe at my Grand-Pa's farm in Lemoore CA, USA. It was a short one he said but to me, 8-10 years old, it looked like a sword attached to a shovel handle, lol now. But to get the dents, from hitting Rocks, out of the blade he used a small square faced heavy hammer and then a file to sharpen it. The funny thing is, when I was about 16, Dad told me that Grand Pa really did like us to come over because back then I could find Rocks he never could find when cutting the high grass. Fun Times!
@ProtonOne113 жыл бұрын
When i was a kid we had a tiny anvil (about 2 fingers wide) stuck in a large wooden log that you sit on. Then you use a large flat hammer and that anvil to reshape the blade before using the oval whetstone to sharpen it. If the damage was really bad, we had a handcranked large (around 2 feet or 60cm diameter) grindingstone wheel too that would get all kinds of farming tools sharp again. Good old times...

Wirklich erstaunlich, was die Leute damals bereits alles bauen konnten. Ebenso erstaunlich, was ihr daraus gemacht habt. Sehr schön, ich ziehe meinen Hut vor dieser Leistung. Erstklassige Arbeit Frohe Weihnachten wünsche ich.

And the name of that 'hand-scythe' is 'sickle'. in. English. Not so much fun than real sickle the multi tool of patch and field. There are heavy sickles enough to cut wrist-thick woods. Sickle had little advantage as decent weapon so never be a popular choice. The advantage of sickle weapon was concealed weapon - disguising local petit peasants. I mean really. That's a true fact of historical ninja not NINJA

Great job - well done! My father used a scythe especially in tall grass, which an ordinary (mechanical) mower wouldn't catch. Before this "machine" came up, they would 'dengel' a scythe with an anvil and a hammer - cold hammering makes the steel very hard, so the edge will hold much longer. The purpose of the 'Dengelfix' is to imitate that cold hammering to create a very sharp and hard edge. Touching it up with a whetstone afterwards makes it a razor! The 'dengel'-process only hardens the very edge, otherwise it would crack and chip, so you can't use a scythe with a fully hardened blade. I tried it two or three times (with very little sucess), you have to get used to it for sufficient results and need years of experience to really master it. It's still in use either for very tall grass or in steep mountain grasslands in the alps and elsewhere. Keep up your great work and stay safe

Thank you for another fine restoration, especially since this is now a rare device but still useful to someone. I want a scythe - I have one particular part of my property that would benefit from cutting with a scythe, because there are too many obstacles to a modern lawnmower or yard tractor. But the price of a good scythe in the US discourages me from buying one. Your work in restoration is great, though some techniques are new to me the end resuslt is functional and beautiful, too. I'll also tell you what the problem is with the Gilligan's Island comedy series. They never depicted/showed me which character represents a good Russian citizen. That's something that's missing in the series. They have to know that some Russians are good people. Even though that's not what the 2 Holy Bible books are: Ezekiel and the Revelation say about Russia. Magog is the biblical word for Russia. If I tell you this, it will be no surprise to you. Even though I tell you about what Samantha Reed Smith and the King's kids did from 1978 to 1983. How they've helped educate every Russian child with the Holy Bible. They definitely brought on the fall of Soviet communism.
