The Neverending Story has two forms: the book and the movie. Each are their own special brand of weird. In this episode, watch as Tuesday examines each of them in turn, and slowly loses his mind while doing so.

I remember enjoying these movies a lot as a kid, but I hadn't read the books, however I went back and watched them all again a few years ago and not only were they not as good as I remember, apparently my memory took a BUNCH of 80s fantasy movies and jumbled them all together into one. There's so many scenes that I thought were in this that are actually other movies and scenes from this movie I thought were something else and there's even more shit I thought was real but afaik never existed in the first place Also, I was going to subscribe to catch part 2 regardless, but that unexpected jk Rowling rant at the end guaranteed it

I had something similar happen while I was reading through the book. I was convincing myself for sure that I remembered how they adapted these scenes into the movie, only to rewatch the movie and have like 90% of the scenes I thought I remembered not be in it And thanks for the sub; glad to have you aboard

This a great film. I was around 12 when this movie came out in the early 80s. I love it

I'm sure this must have been pretty cool to see in theaters as a kid

There was a Neverending Story 3. Jack Black was in it. I haven't seen it, but it's available on KZbin for free.

I distinctly remember the add for Neverending Story 3 playing on old VHS tapes I had as a kid. I've heard it's pretty bad, but in, like, a funny way, so I'm definitely looking forward to watching it

The childlike empress, the joker, deadpool, and the animaniacs are freakishly aware of human beings and how our world works. It disturbs me. The meta commentary is cool, but what about these characters just chilling, fully sentient, in a reality that some teenager came up with after jerking it and taking a nap one afternoon, and if EVERYBODY here isn't interesting or compelling in some way they just cease to exist, and they're just cool with that. I guess they have to be, same as we, as we don't even know the nature of our reality, it just as easily could be the same... ...maybe if there was a way to cross into our, seemingly more permanent reality... to be continued...

Have my like/sub, you "popped into my algorithm" weirdo. I grew up watching this movie but didn't know much of this entertaining deep dive. Very well researched and edited. Appreciate the time you put into it. Keep at it my dude, I'll be watching.

Thanks! I had vaguely remembered watching this when I was a kid too, but had never read the book, so I had a great time digging into it.

Hi! Great video and setup. Clever set. Clever costume. Clever shtick. Clever commentary. It’s all great. As a Millennial, I grew up on this movie. The humor did feel out of place at the time. The effects were reaching really hard, as you point out. And the child actors were not superb. And I was still endeared to them. One thing that sticks out most to me About the film was exactly how the children screamed their lines (in contrast to the Childlike Empress). As a child, it was oddly empowering to see kids screaming at adults and demon dogs, however inept it may have sounded. When seeing the film for the first time I thought, “Wow. Whoever made this gets us [kids].” Anyhow, keep up the good work, Tuesday.

Hey, thanks man! I'm really glad you enjoyed it. Going back and watching this movie kinda put me in a weird place, because I remember adoring it when I was a kid, only to realize how many flaws it had upon a rewatch as an adult. At the same time though, a lot of people put good work into making it, so I think there's a lot of value to be had by watching it, despite the final product lacking in some areas. One might question how effectively they told the story they were trying to tell, but at the same time, it's hard to deny the franchises cultural staying power, so I don't think the effectiveness of the story matters all that much in the long run. The script works well enough for it's intended audience, and quite frankly, any live action adaptation of Fantastica is a net positive in my eyes, so I'm glad we all have this movie to enjoy

oh and btw, i decided to sub after your JKR comment - absolutely hate her and HP - i feel sorry for the millions of poor shmucks that think Hogwarts is magic. literally not a single original idea in any of her work. Ironic that she herself has become a troll. PS I'd recommend reading the original Mary Poppins and comparing to the film - books are literal pagan magic & quite weirdly disturbing.

I like the video but, Ronald Reagan was far from a fascist. Also, Giorgio Moroder made the soundtrack, not mid-tier English synth pop.

Thanks for pointing out the Moroder bit, I completely forgot to mention him when writing the script. The English synth pop line was mostly a dig at Limahl, the English pop group who wrote the theme song. While Reagan may not have been a fascist domestically, per say, I would argue that his policies and rhetoric did wonders to help lay the groundwork for more overtly fascist actors to gain power in the American political system at large. At the same time his foreign policy objectives often closely aligned with overtly fascist forces in Central and South America as an extension (or even a form) of later imperialist power projection by the Hegemon of the western continental region. In essence I believe he exported his fascistic tendencies abroad while crafting the landscape to allow for someone else to implement fascistic policies at home in the future
