This is really one of these series I never hear people talking about and no matter how much I scream about it, nobody seems to hear me. It's SO good and it's a crime it's not being read as much as it should or discussed enough. Great to see someone else discuss it!

SPOILERS: For me, it wasn't just the reveal of who Will was that got me, it was that HE KNEW the whole time. The twist in itself is actually pretty tropey. And I'd also guessed it chapters before when everyone was like "I WONDER who the Dark Lord is... mmmmm..." But the fact that HE KNEW the whole goddamn time. Fuck that got me. For days afterwards I was like HE KNEW. I think what makes it great is that this person thought about the situation and figured it out days/weeks ago. It wasn't a reveal like "noooo it cannott beeee." As if he has some demon inside him who is somehow apart from who he is. He looked in on himself and realised himself who he was, and then purposely embedded himself in this organisation to get information. The whole thing was a lie. It made Will feel not only smart, but conniving. That's exactly what an evil Dark Lord would do. It made me think that Will really could become this manipulative, evil person.

That was pretty amazing to see. I don't think he necessarily embedded himself in the Stewards though. For me it read more like he is horrified, but still has a reasonable sense of self preservation. I'm a few chapters in to book two, and I get the sense that Will genuinely does care about the people around him, and doesn't want to do harm, but can't remove himself from the situation so to speak. All in all, a wonderfully written character

I finished the first book and overall, it’s OK. just ok. Nothing special but not terrible. I wish the pacing was better
