Please discuss the fleur de lis quilt for the next one. It’s a stunner. I love this series. I love those old traditional, antique quilts. Those quilters weren’t burdened with trying to be over the top original. They loved the beauty of classic blocks and used what they had to make something useful and beautiful. Quilting had an innocence back then that I love.

It is an awesome quilt, I am always amazed at how anyone could hand piece and quilt a quilt. Love the colors even though they are faded. I would treasure that quilt and although it has a hole I would try to fix it and never cut it away. That is me I cherish old quilts and learn so much about the time and era they were made and how creative the person who made it was. Thank you for sharing and I love both of the next quilts you talked about so either one I would love to see , hope you do them both. Thank you again.

The bow tie quilt is so fresh with its pastel colored fabrics. Can you just imagine its beauty when it was all pieced together, all the elaborate quilting was done, and it was possibly presented as a gift? Oh my!!! Just as how the wonky old quilts had their own charm this one is so elegant because of its precision. Just sooo lovely!!❤ I vote for quilt B to get a glimpse of all those fabrics.

Thank you so much for watching and for voting! If B doesn't win this time, I will definitely be featuring it in the future. I promise. It is amazing!

First, Quilt B for my vote. As to this beautiful bowtie quilt, I can't say enough. What a score for $10!! I love this pattern, it's always been one of my favorites. I love how they used the same "knot" fabric on each bowtie - what a great idea, and the beautiful quilting. And surely that hole can be repaired. One of my ongoing scrap projects is a bowtie quilt with much smaller blocks (4-1/2" unfinished) using Kona Cotton Honey as the background throughout and every scrap imaginable as the bowties, with the same fabric being used in each bowtie. I'm not sticking to a color theme, just any old scrap. I keep making the blocks until I'll think that it's big enough.
@SewtheDistance11 ай бұрын
Oh, wow! I am sure that is beautiful. Honey is one of my favorite Kona colors! Great insight on this bow tie quilt. It is amazing, isn't it? So many good ideas packed into this quilt. Thank you for watching and sharing your project! Love it!

Agree this is 1930s/40s. Very very nice. Love the lilac bowtie centers--it pulls the whole thing together. Scrap quilts look good with an element that is consistent. I have fixed a number of older quilts with holes and worn binding. Totally doable, and hopefully the hole is fixed with a small piece of vintage fabric. I love this quilt. If you don't have any vintage fabric. I can send you a piece! 😀. I vote for the grandmother's garden quilt, just because it's scrappy and I have never made one of these! Thank you, Kris, for the fun video. Your parents are lovely for getting this for you!!!

My vote is for B. This quilt reminds me of my Grandma, and she made a quilt just like this one when I was a little girl. She cut all of the pieces with scissors and hand sewed all of the pieces together. She had a frame in the front room and would hand quilt all of her quilts. I don't know what happened to this quilt, and I am sure she gave it to someone. This quilt got me interested in quilting, and I am really hoping that you do this quilt. I am not sure how to put all of the hexagons together, and this would love to learn how to do it so I have my own. If not, please save it for another video.

My grandma did the same ! She had shoeboxes she called "starters" When she made a dress apron etc she would get her templates out and make a cut template Then she placed the new pieces in a box for a certain person! For the boys she used bright plaids with coordinating colors When the box was pretty full she would piece while watching TV! Bow Tie was a favorite It was easy and quick She favored sashing straps and cornerstones Her blocks were 8 or 9 inches depending on the finished size ! I think both versions look great and depends on personal preference and availability of material It was easier to get 100% cotton sheets than yardage during that time They also split the batting to make the sandwich thinner That was easie to hand quilt ! My grandma's had frames hung from the ceiling resting on hair backs When done they raised them up and tied off on a hook in the wall ! Took grandma about a week for a twin to full size The Bow Tie had a simple pattern and quicker to quilt ! I have several of these tops in my collection A future summer project! I do enjoy applique so A or me ! ❤

I found it fascinating that so much of the color left a couple of the blocks. The thing I loved about this was that they actually made the bowtie quilt block and not a look alike as we are tending to do these days. I haven't seen anyone make a modern "vintage bowtie" quilt with the bow being all one piece. I'm currently working on one but by making a 4 patch with two blocks with a snowballed corner and two full blocks.

What a thoughtful treasure your parents are to recognize the true value of this beautiful antique quilt! I’ve learned through a sad experience not all of us share the appreciation of this art form. My husband’s dear grandmother, before she died, made each of her 2 daughters a beautiful puff quilt making each small block stuffed by hand, of course. My mother- in law treasured it, but when she took her mother to visit her sister a few states away, had their dog sleeping on it. She said her mother’s 💔but didn’t say anything. It breaks my heart to think of it - I would have treasured it! I enjoyed and share in your enthusiasm for this wonderful old bow tie quilt!

It is a beautiful quilt. I had a bow tie quilt that my aunt made me. Gave it to me when I got married. I used it to death. It's long gone now, since I've taken up quilting, I'm kicking myself that I didn't take better care. But it was truly loved & used, which is what she wanted. It was also hand done, she used yellow background, no sashing, I believe the blocks were 4inch blocks. You could repair the quilt or make pillows out of it. I would make quilt A, I've always liked the 2 color quilts made this way.

Love the bow tie quilt. I'm always impressed when the maker is so meticulous. Looks like a quilt from the 1930s or 40s. The patches are so even they look like they were cut with a rotary cutter, but they were most likely cut with scissors. Those handsewn squares are perfect. The hand quilting was exquisite. That quilt was a great find! I believe i'd like to see the Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt next. Great video! 🥰

It is a beauty, isn't it? It looks like A may be winning at this point, but I will add your vote to the tally and will definitely feature it at some point in the next few months. I promise!

I love when you review these old quilts as I have one on the bed now. It is a nine patch and has lumpy batting, worn and torn binding, and other holes throughout where the fabric is just plain worn out. It's the only quilt I have of the many my grandmother made sometime between the 30's and the 60's. She was a prize winning quilter at one time. I love Quilt A but would like to see Quilt B because it looks more vintage!

So happy you love this series! I have so many more quilts to share, and even if I don't share Quilt B next, I will be sharing it in a future video, I promise. ❤️ Also, thank you for sharing about your grandmother's quilt. Quilts are magical. It has been well-loved, I am sure. ❤️

My great grandmother’s quilts from the 20’s and 30’s are flannel material inside instead of any batting. I like how light weight they are that way.

Love your lessons from an old quilt series!! That bow-tie is sweet and springy and reminds me of a baby quilt my grandma made for her first great grandson! Memories!! I want to see both quilts of course! B would be my vote but will be happy to see it if it is done later!! Keep up the fun videos! Thanks for your love of things from our collective pasts! ❤

This really is a beautiful quilt! it looks so good especially seeing it as a whole, with the placements of the different fabrics. I would like to vote for quilt A, just because it would be interesting to get into the head of someone that could make a whole quilt of one intricate, and repeating block. 😊 Thank you Kris!

I've always liked a bow tie quilt....looking at this pattern I think it would be an easy on to do straight line quilting on without having to mark....simplicity. How about the Hawaiian looking quilt for next time.

Hi Kris. The bow tie quilt is nearly perfect. I like the consistency of the same print for each bow. I have to say I'm voting for Quilt B. I need to see if all those petals are pieced or if that's the quilting on it. Stay warm and safe. ~~ Lynne

Isn't it a remarkable quilt? I am so impressed with this one! Thanks so much for voting, Lynne. If I don't do Quilt B next, I will definitely do it in the future. It is a great quilt! Thanks, as always, for commenting and for watching. 🥰

I like to use the background fabric as a border, especially if I want the quilt to appear to not have a border, that way the binding doesn’t cut off any of the block. I’d love to see you do quilt A next. I’d be tempted to trim off the damage on the bottom and side of the quilt. You could then use the backing and border fabric that’s okay to make a new border and binding. It’s a lovely quilt.
@SewtheDistance11 ай бұрын
Oh, that's a great point! What a wonderful thing we could learn! Thank you! That's kind of what I am thinking when I repair this one. I am still working out the details, but that's where I am leaning. I did that with a few other quilts and it works well. Thanks so much for watching and for the suggestion! ❤️

I inherited 4 quilts from my MIL. You can get the yellow out with retro clean. However. It can remove the color on feedsack material. I had to replace a block on the quilt made by my MIL. It was gone. Nine inch square hole.I fused a piece of batting to the back of the block I made out of new vintage material i had.. I made the block a quarter-inch bigger and ironed down the edges so they were turned in a quarter inch. Then I hand stitched it to the other 4 blocks surrounding it. I also got one that was a bowtie. I quilted all of them on my HQ 16. My MIL was flabbergasted. I was able to get them all clean lots of yellowing, putting them in a huge clear sterlite plastic tub that cost $8.00 in boiling water with retro clean in the summer sun for a day. I also learned the best way of getting rid of moth ball smell is hanging them out in the shade for a week on the clothesline.

Great tip! Thanks! I am not a fan of Retro Clean, however. I prefer Bizz from Walmart. I find it works so much better. Just my opinion, however. I did already wash this one by hand and treated the yellow stains. I may try again this summer and put that area only in the sun to see if it will fade the yellow some. Thanks so much for the tips!
