Hey Josh, my name is John and I just want to say thanks so much! I opened my Yale decision with a bunch of friends during lunch on Thursday AND I GOT IN!!!!! I credit a lot of that to you, your videos, and the great advice you give to your followers about the college application process, so thanks! If I'm gonna be honest, there's a VERY good chance that I will be a fellow Bulldog next year!

I was glancing at this because I was curious if things have changed at all since I attended Yale in the late Devonian (1971-74). What I found was that I was welcomed with open arms (Yale National Scholar) and slammed into brick walls everywhere I turned. That Yale National Scholar thing was supposed to pay my entire expense while I was a student. And probably it would have, if the funds had been available in September as promised instead of the following April. Even when I was living off campus, Yale couldn't seem to understand why this was a problem. (And no, my parents were not in a financial position to advance funds for little things like my rent.) The year I started, the music library decided that the stacks were closed to undergraduates. Those darn pesky undergrads, always sneaking out volumes of Frescobaldi and Buxtehude under their overcoats! At home on vacation, I decided to do a little research for a paper and went to the Stanford music library. My Yale student ID gave me better access to the Stanford music library than to the Yale music library. I wanted to take both third-year Russian and second-year music theory. There were multiple sections of both courses. But all the sections of both courses were given at the same time. Brilliant bit of scheduling! Convenient for the administration, lousy for the students. I wanted to take orchestration. But there were too many students wanting to take orchestration, so it was limited to declared music majors. People are paying how much for tuition? And Yale can't get it together to offer enough sections to accommodate them? Don't get me started on food. In 1971 and 1972 there were no vegetarian options. Likewise on the subject of overcrowding. The living conditions were an insult to any normal person's dignity. I pulled together all my advanced placement credits and graduated in three years with the minimum number of credits. In spite of getting out with no debt, I've always regretted not vetting Yale better before applying. Or preferably before not applying. I did have three professors and one college dean whom I liked. That's not enough to balance all I hated about Yale. More recent note (2004): To apply for a course at a local state university, I needed my Yale transcripts. To fulfill this request, Yale required my full legal name, year of graduation, dates of attendance, Social Security number, current home address, home address when I was attending Yale, and lots more. I sent them all that. And they sent the wrong student's transcripts. Good to know that my perceptions of the administration's ineptitude were not off-base.

I was at Yale past summer for Summer School. I came to know that New Haven is not a safe place. Some undergrad students even said they once heard sounds of gunshots from their dorm room. I mean Yale is safe because of all BlueBox it has, but New Haven isn't.

I live outside New Haven and my dad worked their until I was like 12 and New Haven is a shithole of a city. It has the danger of a giant metropolis like New York or Boston, but none of the benefits.

Alexander Berman I live about 45 minutes away from New Haven and I would just like to defend it. New Haven, although not as big as Boston or New York City, is probably the most interesting and vibrant city in Connecticut. It has a great music and art scene, and is beautiful in the spring and fall. Not once have I felt unsafe walking around in New Haven, but I also don’t live there. Just wanted to give another opinion.

Yale has more $$$$ than most other universities in the ENTIRE US. To complain about ANYTHING there seems elitist and selfish to me. EVERY college has "dining issues." The college I went to in Massachusetts was labeled a "food desert" by students complaining there weren't enough brands of soy milk available in the dining commons. Come on people! Academics, residential life and resources are reasons we choose to go somewhere. NOT the food, per se.

It really depends at where you at. If your at Westville or East Rock, you'll be fine. However if you go to places like the ville or fair haven, you'll probably have a rough time.
