We start by highlighting what you get when you buy the Shark ION P50 cordless upright vacuum cleaner. We have model IC162 so we show what comes with this particular package.
We then begin discussing the things we like about the P50 starting with the fact that the vacuum has controls on the handle. Controls on the handle are very easy to access while you are vacuuming. You can control power on/off, floor mode, and boost mode all from the handle. You do not have to bend over to access switches or buttons.
Also, the P50 is very quiet for an upright. We test it against a number of other uprights and it is quieter than all of them. In addition, we test it against the Dyson V10 Absolute and find that the V10 is quieter in its low power mode, but the V10 in medium and max power modes is louder than the P50. All-in-all we feel the P50 is a very quiet upright vacuum.
We think run times are reasonable. They are not amazing but they are pretty good. In addition, we test the run time for each and every P50 configuration and place all of this information in a table for discussion.
The light weight of the vacuum (12 lbs) as well as the swivel steering make it very easy to move and steer. We show how easy it is to turn the cleaner head by simply twisting your wrist.
Of course the P50 has cordless convenience which has quite a few advantages over a corded vacuum. You do not need to be near a power outlet and you can take the vacuum pretty much anywhere. It is also so much easier to just grab and go. No unwinding a power cord. And when you are finished there is no power cord to wind up. For quick jobs the cordless approach is extremely convenient.
While the dust canister is not large for an upright, it is also not too small for a cordless vacuum. You should not find yourself having to empty the dust canister too frequently.
We like the DuoClean Technology - the two brushrolls in the cleaner head. This approach allows for good cleaning results on both carpet and bare floors. We test the P50 cleaning prowess against the Dyson V10 Absolute (cordless) and the full size corded Shark NV752. The P50 does reasonably well.
The vacuum also comes with a HEPA filter which is great if you or someone in your home suffers from asthma or allergies. In addition, the P50 has a sealed system which ensures all air entering the vacuum is filtered before being exhausted from the vacuum. Unfiltered air does not escape through poor seals or cracks.
We like the removable battery. This is really handy if you want to get a second battery and essentially double your run time. Some cordless units do not allow you to swap the battery out.
Finally, it is nice that the vacuum has headlights. These make vacuuming in dimly lit areas easier.
