I strongly recommend that you search your land with an eye toward it's paleolithic history and remains. Some of the boulders i've seen in your videos look stacked and arranged and might date back 8000 years or more. You're in the right part of the world for those things. As you clear, keep your eye out for the arrangement of large boulders that line up with the solstices and equinox. And of course petroglyphs. I also urge you to buy a metal detector. Bronze age objects might just lie about and be a real draw to have people come visit and volunteer to help clear and document your land and its beautiful stone formations and ruins. Keep up the great work, you're both a joy to watch. I'm hooked on Molly too.

I couldn't agree with you more: we would love to learn more about geological and paleolithic history . We were told by our senior neighbours that the public dirt track that passes through our land was the only road west over 50 years ago so definitely worth going over it with a metal detector too. Thanks for watching Tim . Molly send you kisses x x x

I love what you’re doing in terms of regeneration of your land and your appreciation of soil microorganisms. Especially your understanding of recharging your aquifers with healthy soil to retain water and how that will fight global heating and the fires plaguing Portugal and elsewhere. Bring back water in the soil, restore vibrant life on the land. Thank you for what you are doing and how that builds community.

Hello Luke and Sarah I have done my own if a bit smaller farm in Montenegro. Some points which may help you. 1 collect your building materials from your land you have all the stone required. 2 when you do your plans for the buildings look old Arabic design in-terms of cooling maybe a courtyard in the center?. 3 Get your digger fixed to clean the water ways so enabling to see highs and you may find things running better. 4 passive irrigation for the rest of the land. I hope I have not over stepped the mark. I wish you well with your endeavors. I for what it’s worth enjoying seeing content please keep it up fun and positive. Thank you 😊

One random idea, adding up everything - you have a big area, ruins of a cheese factory, you have goats, you have plenty of water, you want to receive guests and have a beautiful place to welcome them. What about a place where guests could make their cheese from the milk they get from your goats? The more cheese they produce, the bigger the discount in their stay. If they don't feel like making cheese, and/or in the meantime, you could create games of "treasure hunt" - you could hide small "treasures" somewhere (for example, small cheeses) and provide them clues for them to find it. The prize would be... they get to eat it. 🙂

A very interesting video, I think you are taking on a huge project, so, as I see it, you have mastered the gardening, and Luke is doing well with using wood for furniture, clearing the land is monumental, so I would think getting volunteers is an awesome idea to move things along. Do you Luke have the idea to expand your woodworking interests? I like the idea someone had to allow guests/volunteers milk goats and make cheese. I make cheese and it is super easy ! you have a great climate for growing many herbs . cooking class/visits combined with camping could maybe bring in revenue for you. I love what you guys are doing and always take my ideas and advice with a grain of sand as I dont live in Portugal but hope they may help you or guide you to the information you need. I do not know your master plan of course but you asked what your viewers would do with the place. Thought about it all week. 1st I would try to figure out the old irigation systems on your land and fix them if possible. 2nd I would limit any burning and instead use the material to build swales and huegalkulture mounds. This would build soil plus help with water retention. With that watermill If it could be made to work again it could provide you with your electric needs. As for cash crops I do not know what are big sellers in Europe as I haven't been there in over a decade but you can grow citrus fruits. Here in the states you can order boxes of oranges, tangerine, blood orange, and grapefruit and have it delivered in the mail. A mail order citrus buisness would be an idea since you could even list it on your future website and limit your sales to Europe. Your river land is wet but rough looking so a chestnut grove might be an option there and those to could be shipped and sold. There is talk of almond production beginning in your part of Portugal. Several hectares of those would be a good cash crop. Cork oak would be another long term cash crop. 5 hectares of mature oaks should produce a lot of cork. The eco and beyond couple made a deal where they split the oil yield from their trees. If you had 2-4 hectares of olive trees you could sell oil to your guests or threw the mail and not have to do all the maintenance work of the trees. Another cash crop could be shallots and garlic. You could plant them in the fall and harvest in the early summer. As a chef and food truck operator you would have a better knowledge of if thats a viable idea. For fun I would plant a small vinyard and make my own wines that me and the guests could enjoy. Would also plant a really amazing orchard. I would build a hoophouse pig pen and have the floor be a meter of woodchips, sawdust, and logs. Every 4 years I would use the material to fertilize and build soil. It would not be large big enough for 2 sows to each have a farrowing stall and then a large area for litters to grow out. The pigs main purpose would be to be a way to recover waste crops. If a pig can eat it and I couldn't sell it off the farm I would recycle it into pork. For chickens I would run breese chickens in the various orchards using electric netting to keep them contained, for housing trailer based huts. I would maintain a small flock of goats and sheep as lawnmower as well as brush control. For visitors I would build like a five yurt village and see how that goes.

Hi luke & sarah. Love your videos. I had two little parcels wrapped up to send to you (some socks you said you needed but then I saw one of your video's that said you couldn't receive them because you had to pay extra because you were in the eurozone. as I am from England I suppose that it will be included also. so sorry about that. I didn't know you used volunteers.but I think that is a marvelous idea. You said you & luke had both done it when you travelled. Hope everything works out well for you all. You certainly seem happy anyway .

I wrote 2 comments here last week that somehow disappeared. The gist was to check out Andrew Millison' s KZbin channel. There is a series of videos called India's Water Revolution. Video number 5 has a very good solution for your land. Digging ditches for water retention while also planting those little cork oak trees you are saving from the wild brush. Also check out the PAANI FOUNDATION, they are doing wonderful things turning deserts into forests. Good luck!

Thanks for your honesty and openness to share. We are planning on getting a ruin in a couple years, but as we are early 50s we need a few more years begore we can early retire so working from home still seems like the best way to maintain a steady income if we can continue doing what we do in portugal. Do you guys have good internet connection in your farm? Thanks. I will be seeing a couple places in April in Castelo Branco. But I would like to volunteer in different locations with different farming off grid lifestyles before I actually buy land to do a dry run and see how I like actually doing the farmer job. :) I am truly inspired by what you have done. Now my plan does not look so crazy :D

I am so excited for you both and if I ever get time and get to Portugal would love to volunteer. Your man made canals are probably called lavadas, and would be amazing to uncover. Agree to having more animals on the land as that will help to create better soil structure. Have you considered having a parking or tent area for those who are self sufficient to stay? I think regular sessions on trips around your land would also be really interesting?

Sarah set up a Discord account for the community and link it to the website. Also you guys might tap deeper into the digital age and maybe consider to stream live through the biggest stream service in the planet.. Twitch, there's plenty of nature streams in there as well as in YT.

You are praising that there is so much land to buy and so on... What homepages do you use to look for land initially? Mostly it looks like the pages are for the rich who want luxury homes.
@lukeandsarahsoffgridlife2 жыл бұрын
No idea where you are looking but there are plenty of properties in Central Portugal at affordable prices . Good luck on the hunt but if you want we have a video called five tips when buying land in Portugal and in the description there are a few links

Hallo Luke and Sarah, acro tourism is certainly a good idea, you have the space and the possibilities for this. perhaps what could also be next to it is the possibility to set up a kind of small house that people can rent who want to spend the winter in the south of Europe (Portugal) there are quite a lot of people looking for a piece of land in your region and seen that the administration for a house or a piece of land takes quite a long time, it is useful to be able to live there temporarily. to get to know the area. you can of course also give workshops in woodworking or cooking or garden maintenance in portugal and of course water management. your expertise and experiences are of course very good for others too good luck with your plans. I follow you and am curious about your adventures. Grettings from a wet and cold Netherlands 👍💪❤🇵🇹☀️🌴🍗🍻🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷

Interestingly, Portugal is antipodal to New Zealand. So Portugal is literally the farthest way from New Zealand you could have chosen on this planet. 🙂

Hi , i am wondering the cost of 42 Acres = 17 Hectar land , could you please give me an idea of the cost ? Thanks .
@lukeandsarahsoffgridlife2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lennox prices are not what they were 4 years ago so you really can't get an idea for how much we paid. A current search for properties on some sites will be a better idea but if you are interested in what we got for our money ,here it is kzbin.info/www/bejne/aIm8mqOXYtutqs0
@clickbaitnumberone14032 жыл бұрын
17 hectare, thats about 400 by 400 m isnt it? Well thats giant in my opinion.
