I really admire Cristine because she is genuinely a good person. She doesn't have an ego and she really values the wellbeing of her audience, especially as many of them are young girls. She donates to charities, never takes sponsorships if she doesn't agree with their values, and she even gave away a semester of college tuition! She is who I aspire to be, but not in the way you might think. I aspire to be as strong in my values and as kind and caring as she is. I aspire to be selfless and honest and to maintain my integrity and not give in to greed. The fact that she was never even remotely lured into these deals and that she really takes the time to create products that she's proud of instead of making cheap products for easy money just shows that her heart is in the right place. She speaks openly about important topics and will stand up for what she believes is right. Cristine is a good person because she upholds her values and her integrity through her fame. I can't even express how much I wish I was as strong minded as her. Thank you so much, Cristine, for being such an amazing person and for teaching me what being a good person really is. I think we need more people like you in the world.

Hey, I would like to hear more about your trademarked "Holo it's me" issue with B&BW. Some people aren't informed on how to protect their brand, especially against larger companies that have more experience in legal aspect of business. Maybe by sharing your story, it will help many small businesses protect themselves from being taken advantage of, and raise awareness on how important it is to trademark your catchphrase in case things like this do happen. And do you get anything from the settlement since they made a profit out of it? :D

Plus, I know it will be a great quality and reasonable price. And you should consider a tour to meet & greet fans after this pandemic dies down. Mayb Cristine could organise AA meeting for fans and makes us tell stories of our obsession about her. Or they could do a live podcast. So we could interact with Cristine. The Vidcon segment was pretty interesting. Did Ben and Cristine never meet John and/or Hank? I would think if there was ever a (pair of) KZbinr(s) they would like based on their platform use it's the Green brothers. They do essentially all the same things they do with their platform, just that they've been doing it for a longer time as a pair of "legacy KZbinrs". They value education, they give a bunch of money to charity, their communities are positive and supportive, and they make content that's thought-provoking and kind. They also hold jobs outside of YT, don't live in L.A. and have been pretty transparent about the sell of Vidcon, Hank even just talked about it semi-recently (3 months ago now) on Phil's podcast. Just an interesting take from the creator's viewpoint, as it seems to vary depending on the creator.
@haleygilmour93934 жыл бұрын
It was interesting to hear Ben have a negative-leaning take on Hank Green because I have heard almost exclusively good things about him. I knew he sold vidcon, but as a guy with a modest house and a 2010-ish volt, I doubt he spent that money on himself. It must've all gone back into Complexly or their charitable endeavors. I think it's pretty unfair to suggest that the Green Brothers (the people who founded Vidcon) sold Vidcon only to get the money for selfish reasons. To be fair about Hank and John Green selling Vidcon for so much money, they do a TON of work with charities and donate a lot of money. I don't know if this is the case with the money they made from this sale, but I imagine a good amount of it went that way. They also run a video production company with many employees. I just think this context matters, it's not just two dudes who got millions of dollars, it's two business owners and philanthropists.

I've been following the vlogbrothers for a long time so I have a bias towards them, but I also know how much they care about giving back and their commitment to charity. Critiquing the event is totally valid and even how much it's rumoured to have been sold for is worth discussing, I just feel like leaving this out misrepresented the situation (again, only of the sale) a little bit.

@@lolamarie3555 I agree. I've followed them for some years now and I know they are genuinely good people. I think they want to focus on their jobs and charity work. This sale was a way to do that. I could definitely see that but after hearing what Ben said I see their side too. Like why would they choose Viacom such a huge company to make money off youtubers meeting their fans? Yes those events are very expensive to put on and require paying lots of employees to pull it all together but maybe they should pay the youtubers since they bring in so much money to them. I feel like these companies just see youtubers as cash cows, the same way managers, merch companies and other take advantage of creators.

Ben low-key throwing shade at Hank and John Green for selling Vidcon to Viacom was pretty funny. A little disheartening, because it's terrible that the event changed after they brought Viacom into the mix, but the Vidcon company needed more help to continue to make the convention better than what people expected. Here is Hank's video if you want to learn more about the situation, it was just a little more than two KZbinrs selling out to a corporation, which I'm sure isn't what Ben meant, but it was a little implied. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mWeVcoiIf99ppaM

And it’s still frustrating for other content creators to see the amount of money made off them when they were just using it as a way to meet fans and network but weren’t being paid at all. Like the criticism is not invalid and trying to invalidate it by going BUT CHARITY just makes people want to push back harder. It’s not relevant. I think the thing with house tours (or at least why I love them so much) is I just love seeing different layouts of houses. Like sometimes when driving through a neighborhood I'm like "The outside of that house is really nice, I wonder what the layout is like on the inside and what it looks like on the inside." I just personally enjoy seeing that. And it's not so much about "bragging" or showing off things, I just love to see the layout and to see how people have decorated their space (whether they did it themselves or hired a decorator). That's just super interesting to me. But that's also coming from me, a girl who lives in Texas and has no intention of finding anyones house and driving to it or causing harm in any way. I honestly hadn't considered the reason you mentioned for not wanting to do one, and those are really good points. Just because I'm not going to go try and rob you doesn't mean someone else wouldn't. So I get it. Well hey, maybe if you ever move from that house you can do a house tour before you move lol.

Think about all the Green Brothers do for the community. The money they made off of Vidcon likely went back into the community. Educational videos and podcasts. DFTBA. Running those businesses ain’t cheap. I can’t say it justifies it, but just something else to think about.

Eh, people choose to spend the money in the end. So I'm find with it.

Also, by 2018, Complexly was incapable of running a convention that had become so much bigger than they ever imagined, and it was seriously taking away from their ability to do what had always been their intention. Once they didn't recognize the youtubers people were begging to attend, they realized they needed to hand it off.
@bn11424 жыл бұрын
I'm glad there are some comments here about this - not that it seemed like Ben was criticising the brothers exactly, but just the mention of them in something that sounded a little money-grabby made me worry that others who don't know them will think poorly in that regard still. I mean I don't doubt at all that they're rich AF compared to most people still, but they are also soooo certainly two of the most ethical YT-ers that I can imagine besides Cristine. Their Partners in Health collaboration and everything that is done with learning opportunities in mind just make the world feel a little wamer to me.

I just want to put this out there John and Hank Green give so so much of the money they make to charity. I get why selling it for a lot seems weird but they keep so little of the money.

im gay, i obviously can't speak for everyone in the community but i agree with everything Ben said. Theres nothing wrong with holosexual or talking about the attraction to holo. but using the term "coming out" is a bit insensitive as you said it's a very difficult thing that shoudl not be joked about. in addition i beilve it was in an old unboxing video ? or perhaps a Q&A someone asked if you were bisexual and you responded "no im holosexual" that did rub me wrong a bit. but that fact that you addressed this today is great.

I always thought it was a way of highlighting the oddness that is the need to come out. Why should anyone? Surely the issue is with the assumptions made about people that require them to come out? If everyone just dated who they liked there would be no need.
@tiffanyroberson97733 жыл бұрын
@@dees3179 Sexuality *shouldn’t* be a big deal and people shouldn’t need to “come out”, but because LGBTQ+ people are discriminated against simply because we exist and because others MAKE it a big deal, it’s necessary. I hope that makes sense. It’s like the “all lives matter” thing. Yes, all lives *should* matter and that’s how it *should* be, but that’s not reality. BIPOC are being discriminated against and their lives aren’t valued like they should be. Being gay *should* be normalized, but that’s just not the case right now. It’s still illegal in many places to be LGBTQ+, the Gay Panic Defense still exists as a valid legal argument, we’re still fighting for our rights, so our identities are still a big deal because we keep having to fight to just exist.
@user-i9z3 жыл бұрын
i feel kind of weird piling my own explanation after two others @@dees3179 but i felt like adding that coming out brings about a sense of comfort and closure. living in the dark, unknowing whether your family members or even your best friends would drop you the second they knew you were lgbt, is incredibly suffocating. coming out relieves that tension, though you have to be prepared for the consequences. you might even discover that the person who took care of you all your life can't look at you anymore without being disgusted! fun! having cut out the unsupportive slices of your social circle before entering an lgbt relationship (example) is a far better situation, anyway, compared to entering one and _then_ experiencing the ensuing fallout. of course, it _is_ a little theatrical to make a big deal of coming out if you're already 100% sure that everyone knows and supports you, but that kind of situation hardly pops up in real life.

I would love to see HoloTaco cat ears or earmuffs. It's getting into winter weather so I got warm things on my mind.. When it comes to HoloTaco, we all know everything is going to be tested but only the best will be produced so we don't mind waiting on products. And tbh, we all know Cristine's favorite things so we all know what's on the Wish List. Cristine isn't really giving anything away during the podcasts.

I will admit I have a biased opinion because I love John and Hank Green but, from my understanding, large amounts of the money Complexly makes goes back into the company to fund content like Crash Course, SciShow, etc. or is donated. So, while it is a fair assesment that KZbinrs attending VidCon could have been compensated better, I also don't feel bad about the money made from it going to fund educational content and charities Edit: Not to say John and Hank haven't made a lot of money. They most certainly lead a comfortable life, but also, they are not your stereotypical rich KZbinrs and I think that's evident from their content

I would love hearing about trademark and copyright issues. I always go back and forth between saying that I get it because I respect people protecting their property, but then a lot of the time I'm just like "holy shit why does this matter??" and I think you're right that it's sort of an antiquated thing that needs an update to continue to work in today's age.
