Whilst there is no condoning the African slave trade, if it wasn't for the Royal Navy later patrolling the African coast to hunt down slave ships and blockading other countries like Brazil forcing them to capitulate and demanding other countries like France etc follow suit, Human slavery would still exist today on a global scale. It would still be considered normal practice. The abolition act was 217 years ago, imagine how many more slaves would have existed in the world through 217 more years and how many more there would be to come in the centuries to come if it was still freely practiced as normal today. Greedy aristocratic owned companies are the ones who traded in slavery, it was the British people (the civilians) that pushed for abolition and served in the Royal Navy to stop it from happening. Do not confuse the British civilians population at home with what the rich aristocratic elite were doing with their companies. My ancestors had nothing to do with the slave trade, all my ancestors in my family tree worked down the coal mines of Yorkshire.
