Hi guys! I'm Mexican living in Berlin since 7 years ago, now I'm German too. So, since I had a Studienvorbereitung visum (Study Preparation Visa) I married in Germany and I didn't have to go back to Mexico to change it, I just went to the Auslanderbehörder and they changed it. So, I had twice the Fiktionsbescheinigung because I told them I had a flight, and they give you a specific time, visa and sometimes if they're nice I think they give you a maximum of 3 months that you're allowed to travel with it, but I've got it months before I had a planned flight, I just had to tell them I had a flight to (on that time) to UK and Ukraine, because, without it, sometimes you can't go out from Germany, not even travel into a country in the European Union. Anyway, back to my experience dealing with the German bureaucracy... This is in Berlin, (fortunately, I was always lucky, and some spots are available on Tuesdays at 7 AM and I didn't have to deal with it) so I don't know how it is somewhere else, but if you don't have an appointment, a lot of people had to make a line at 5 AM, to get an appointment around 9 AM or something. Also, after COVID getting appointments is getting more difficult, so I was just sending an email and they sent an automatic email saying I'm allowed to be in Germany and that I had to wait for my appointment date email in the next 2 weeks and I've got my appointment email (that was on May) but the appointment date was 3 months later (on August) so I didn't book any flight during these 3 months. Again, I know people who haven't received any appointment in 2 years, even sending an email... Furthermore, probably you know, but if you don't, Joss can apply for German citizenship after 3 years of living in Germany and 2 years married, you can ask if your study time also counts for it, because in this case, Joss can get it in only 2 years, so you maintain your main residence during 2 years in Germany, and that's it, you can move and live wherever you want in Europe. But you can't change your residence outside Germany for more than 6 months during these 2 years, otherwise, Joss is losing her visa. Me, I lived with my husband for 5 months in Mexico, just not to lose my German residence. So, if you need any more info, you can contact me, I can talk to you from my experience, also my husband is a German lawyer, so I already told him hahaha he should be specialized and be a Fachanwalt für Migrationsrecht because his wife is his own case study. 😂 Congratulations on your wedding, Joss moving to Germany, and your new baby video project! I have been following you guys since Joss posted a video of you two dancing in a group mentioning she was going to live in Munich and I have seen your growth process!

I am Mexican and I waited 8 month for my change of residence in the Netherlands since my partner is Dutch and still they denied it :( it’s unbelievable how much time it can take, the IND doesn’t understand we are humans and we just want to live together. If someone got a partner residence permit in the Netherlands I would love to hear your story.

I feel your frustration. I was supposed to move to Mexico (from the US) a few days ago. My residency is going to expire in Mexico. My country STILL hasn't returned my passport to me (had to renew it). As you've experienced, these agencies think you can just chill out in whatever country and that you have no other plans/obligations in life. Good luck!

I went through a similar process except that we decided to marry "por el civil" in Germany so everything was super easy afterwards for the residence permit, we will celebrate the big party in Mexico next year but at least doing all the paperwork here made it easier, also we live in Munich so maybe the offices just work in a different way because we were able to make an appointment online with no problem 🤷🏻‍♀️ I hope you can solve that issue, good luck ✨

We went through this too. Good luck! Smaller towns tend to go a bit faster than the big cities. We actually had no problem at all, but we are out in the sticks. The first Aufenthalt is usually for a year (costs €100), second one is two years, same price. If you want to take up citizenship...well I'm not sure if the process us the same or if it differs depending on where you come from, but I know we can kick it off 6 months before the end of the second Aufenthalt and I have to give up my original citizenship, go wirite a B1 language exam and do the Einbürgerungs test before applying. I expect there will be more paperwork than what we are currently aware of...there always is 😉

I can totally understand you guys! My husband and I had to go trough the same process and it was awful!! He even had to buy another tiket because the visa arrived 6 weeks later than expected. I was already in Germany and I didn´t have a clue what to do. And when he arrived, the residency permit took 9 months to arrive! Finally, he got his permit for three years. Luckily, the workers at the Rathaus were very nice (truth is, we live in a very small town) and were always ready to helo us and to give us support. BTW, the videos of the wedding were beautiful!! I cried all the time!!

Bureaucracy knows no bounds, no limits, no borders; either the process is so laid back that it takes forever, or so complex that it takes forever, or requires so many papers & signatures that it takes forever, or is being carried out by people who really don't care any more so it takes forever. I've lived on 3 continents and traveled in a 4th, and the same rules hold true everywhere. Hang in there!

Hola!

Muchos abrazos

I live in Germany and also had to struggle booking a resident permit appointment. You have to wake a very early and check the appointment system (refresh the page every 30 seconds). People either cancel their appointments on the same day or the Amt opens more slots. Good luck with the process!

Red tape is the most horrible thing. At least you were given your visa :). I don't think anywhere in the world just for marrying a foreigner you magically have the right to be in their country. I get so pissed off when someone tells me so 😂. My husband is american and we just decided to give up in the process it's currently taking about 1.5 years if not 2 to get the appointment and the whole process is expensive. So look up to you guys for not giving up. 😊 I'm pretty sure you'll get your residency pretty soon :D. Enjoy your stay in Paris ^^ I'm so happy to know that you're also making videos and sharing your experiences with us. Send you a hug from Mexico. Love you ! I don´t know about Hamburg, but in Nürnberg, for example, they do NOT have any open hours at anytime! Ever!!! They don´t reply to you either, EVER!!! BUT... they aknowledge that they´re not answering, so at least they´ll send you the Fiktionsbescheinigung on a pretty considerable time before your visa expires, so that you can work...Cuz, for the ones that don´t know this, If you don´t have this document you can get fired right away, since your company can get a penalty fee from the state that runs into the thousands of euros! .... SO here´s the way to pressure them! You tell your Arbeitgeber, to send them A FAX or a BRIEF mit Einschreibung telling them that they need your Fiktionsbescheinigung urgently, and then somehow, the Amt starts to move.... Only people living in Germany would know the STRUGGLE! T_T GOOD LUCK!!!

My husband (from the US) came to Germany on a tourist visa and had to go to the Ausländerbehörde here as well and apply for the Aufenthaltstitel. It was a lot of paperwork but not as much as it was for us to get married here… That was even worse! We had to get all his documents translated by an official translator which cost us a bunch of money and well, it eventually worked out 🎉. He got a Fiktionsbescheinigung as well so he was able to apply for a job here. After he had that it went relatively fast. He got to Germany in June and was able to start working (=got his Aufenthaltstitel) in October. Fingers crossed and thumbs pressed for you guys! 🤞🤞

Applying for the permanent residence in the US was very easy, I did it myself because my situation was not complicated. It took 12 months to get a work visa while I waited for the permanent residence which took another six months. The caveat was that I wasn't allowed to leave the county until getting the residence. Other than that, the SS office and the Homeland Security office were easy and quick appointments, it took less than a half hour to go in and out. I understand it took a long time because there are millions of people applying for the same every day, but it was withing the timeframe they promised, so I was happy with that.

I just got my spousal visa in Colombia a couple of weeks ago. The application process is a bit painful, but not nearly as bad as it will be when my wife and I want to go to the US, where i'm from. Once everything was turned in, which we did online, the colombian governement was very quick with their side, and we were able to get appointments with immigration whenever we wanted. The biggest problem for me was that clearly, the people working in the cancilleria were the unhappiest people on earth, and they acted like that was our fault. Still though, i am really not looking forward to the day that we apply for my wife to go to the US. Maybe we just won't 🤷🏼‍♂️

I moved 5 years ago to Germany with my husband, who is a Spanish citizen. In principle, because German law does not apply, but EU law, I could apply for residency directly in Germany. The advantage is that we live in a small town, but it took me almost a year to get my residence permit .... and with the Fiktionsbescheinigung no employer would hire me. So, well, I reached B2 level of German at home during that time. After the pandemic, the delays at the Auslanderbehörde have increased horribly, I am afraid, because my residence expires next year. The truth is that one of the things that has surprised me is how complicated the process is in cases like these where the law literally does not allow families to separate, but somehow they manage to drag out the process, which in the end means less taxes for them.

I moved to Hamburg seven and half years ago, but in my case the process was simple since I am a EU citizen (I am from Spain). The long process will be next year since it will be 8 years since my move and therefore can start the process to get the double citizenship (German and Spanish).

I’m a Mexican born, USA citizen and my husband an Albanian born Greek citizen. He was living in London for several years and I decided to move there once I graduated from the university. We got married civilly in the US when he came to visit and after 6 month I went to the UK with no visa. The week that I got there we went to a solicitor and he sent our application for my UK residency. After a week I had to go to the post office to do my biometric and after another couple week I had 1 meeting and another week passed and I got my 5 year UK residence. We eventually moved to the US and that process was more complex and very expensive took about 1 year but because by then we had been married for over 2 year he got a 10 year residency in the US.

Yup. I could make a similar video to yours for getting into the UK with a partner visa. It's extremely annoying and emotionally exhausting. I have to renew it this year, wish me luck!

Just seeing the thumbnail and the title I already knew this was going to be about 💖 German Bureaucracy 💖 There is really nothing you can do but laugh about it 🤦‍♀️😅 I once read that Germany was voted the worst country to migrate to when it comes to bureaucracy...

usually if you send an email to your specific Referat in the Ausländerbehörde stating your situation (that there was no appointment available, that your visa expires at a certain time, and so on), this email is valid as an extension of your visa or residence permit until they give you an appointment. this is stated in the automatic reply they send when they receive your email. about the online booking appointment: there are specific times where new dates are put available, normally between 15-16:00 when the shift is over or at midnight. It is indeed pretty tricky... I saw that in other countries like Denmark the processing is much faster, maybe for you guys it would've been better in the end. anyways, best of luck!

Ugh, that is so annoying! At least the video ended happily with your reaction to our well wishes. I wish you guys well with getting that paper when that time comes. Since you guys started establishing a home base in Germany now, will you start a Na Toll office there too after your time in Paris?

Yeah, I had to renew my residence permit last year and everytime I tried to make an appointment, they'd say they would contact me. Then when the expiration date kept getting closer, they said on the phone that they're really busy and it's fine if it expires. I asked multiple times for them to email those words to me so that I could have it in writing, but they never did. I also wanted to know if this 90 day Schengen visa would start after my old residence permit expires, and they never gave me a clear answer on that. Eventually I did get an appointment about a month or 2 after my permit expired.
