I grew up in Eastern Europe and I live in France. - About the birthdays, I think it's normal because as a birthday person inviting people you get to choose where, what and with who and if you celebrate at all. Normally you would have more or less control over how much you spend. But you only have your birthday once per year and if you have to pay a little every time to organise someone else's birthday it all amounts to the same thing or even more. It's also seen as a point of pride, sort of, to pay for your guests (not only in case of birthdays but any special occasion). Most people stop celebrating birthdays out with friends after their mid 20s anyway, I think. Only the big ones like 30, 40, 50. Otherwise at home with family. The last birthday I ever celebrated out inviting friends was 22. - "À propos" is a French expression (2 words technically) and that is how you say it (silent s) in Bulgaria as well, even though it's rare. - Thermometer in the armpit is the most common in Europe. This might be just a German thing ? - The type of toilets mentioned are rather rare. 😀 As Janik said, only in older buildings. - Suppositories are rare for adults. This is fun, please do a part 2 !

Oh Joss, what are we going to do with you? 😂Bidets are VERY common here in Spain. Yes, you can regulate the temperature just like a bath or a sink, and it is a convenient way to wash up without needing a full bath or shower, rather like washing your hands! I hope sinks are not a culture shock too!!! you can sit facing the tap, or away from it, but it is VERY convenient for hygiene after a poop, during the menstrual cycle, pre and post marital relations, and as Janik discovered, for washing stinky feet! Bathing a puppy or handwashing stockings or underwear are other possible uses, and I truly would not want to be without mine!

" apropos " is french but the spelling change is "à propos" the "s" is also silent but we don't use it a lot to say "by the way" we prefer use " au fait ( prononciation = o fèt ) or d'ailleurs ( prononciation = dayeur )

But „apropos“ doesn't have the same meaning as „a propósito“. We're using this in different contexts

1) I'm from Milan and here for birthdays there's not a strict rule. When I invited my friends for birthdays I have never paid, but it could be different in other parts of Italy. 2) In Italy every house has a bidet, you don't find it in public places (restaurants, stations, airports, offices, etc.) for obvious reasons. 3) In Italy we measure the temperature putting the thermometer under the armpit, but I remember, when I was a kid, that the doctor once asked my mother to measure the temperature from the anus (not forever, just that time) because it's more precise. 4) Sometimes suppositories are necessary, it's not frequent to use them (probably some suppositories that existed in the past have been replaced by pills), but from time to time, depending on the sickness, a doctor can still prescribe them.

When it's your birthday here (Ireland ) friends & family woyod never allow you to pay for your birthday meal, it would never happen!!! Also we measure our temperature in armpit. We would never use phypostries unless we had hemmoroids😂 I get that you find these weird because they are !

So I'm from Italy (Sardinia) and paying for your friends on your birthday and inviting them to dinner it's like a way to show that you care about them and you're grateful that they've been there another year. Lol I get why it doesn't make sense for people from other countries but we really love to share and make people feel involved in our lives and loved on our birthday. The ones we invite to our party will bring us a birthday gift so it's a way to pay back😊 here in Sardinia some people insist on paying even if they invited you to go out to eat or drink even if it is a completely normal day😂

Suppositories have the advantage that the "pill" has not to go through the stomach. The stomach has one of the most hostile (acidic) environments to be able to break down food and also bacteria. So pills going down there must be protected to survive without change of their composition. That is not necessary in the intestine because there only water and chemicals, as in the "pill", are taken out. And the substances go directly into the circulation. So there are certain conditions when that way is more effective. Because the protective substances for normal pills have to go through the digestive system (all stages!) without being absorbed by the body.

For fever measurements the armpit is too unreliable. Anus indeed is most reliable and accurate. Under the tongue is a decent compromise, so that’s the one we use in our house.

Medicine for the anus has advantages. 1.: The active ingredients be more active and faster as you take a pill. 2.: In some cases a pill doesn’t work properly, because the stomach is blocked 3.: The adverse effects are lower due to the substrates

I spent a summer studying in Austria and almost every toilet had that poop holding plate thing, and keeping it clean was such a nightmare. Always had to flush like 5 times because the amount of water wasn’t enough for the legion of turds 😩
@publicminx

in this case its a matter of the waterflow, not the construction of the toilette. an advantage of plates is btw. that it does less splash than if it falls into the water ...

a bidet is rather outdated. in Germany (but also in many Western/global countries) many (more and more) have a bit more expensive toilettes which warms the seat and have jet systems integrated (which can be setup for different modes - and u have also usually a remote control additionally). it is not standard in every house hold but part of the diversity of toilettes nowadays ...

Well that was extra fun talking about poop and buttholes! We should do this again sometime. The way I understand the use of suppositories is when you have nausea and/or vomiting and you don't have another way to get medicine on board such as an IV line like in a hospital.

For a lot of these things I thought I was the only one 😅 the stuff with the birthday bothers me a lot 😑 to the point that I stopped celebrating my birthday because of it... I usually either travel with Marvin or we go alone eat somewhere nice 😅 And with the Bide... it is so altmodisch!! Since years we have a wayyy better version and it is a hygenische Dusche... it is like a little hand shower that it's directly next to the toilet and you use it after you are done with your business (because it has so much pressure, you actually don't need paper 🤯

There are modern toilet bidets like the one Janik described in Japan. There are muslim showers which are also good for cleaning and moving around the water spray. They are more common in middle east etc.. Suppository formulations are absorbed faster and bypass the stomach so less side effects. Most of the world still prefers oral though as more convenient and less messy. You can take temperature from the ear if you want a more accurate alternative than underarm.
