30:58 Democracy isn't the problem. We actually don't have democracy. If we did, governments would implement overwhelmingly popular policies, for example, in the US, single payer healthcare (which has over 70% support) and strict gun control (which has over 90% support). Many countries that claim to be democratic are actually plutocratic oligarchies, with a small number of wealthy individuals controlling (either directly or indirectly) the operations of government.
@jag1970s5 жыл бұрын
I'm inclined to agree with you. XR is for me a response to a crisis of democracy as well as the climate and ecological emergency.
@Beery19625 жыл бұрын
Another major problem is propaganda. For example, in the US, people on the political left are aware of climate change and are overwhelmingly in favor of a Green New Deal. But on the right, people have been convinced by centrist and right-leaning media companies that climate change is either not important or not real, so people have no idea that it's even a threat. As a result, the polling on the issue is mixed.
@Beery19625 жыл бұрын
@@jag1970s Yup. After all, if we had a functioning democracy, we wouldn't need citizen assemblies.
@jag1970s5 жыл бұрын
@@Beery1962 In my opinion that is correct. One might say that the House of Parliament ought to be the ultimate 'citizens assembly' already... but on the other hand, it is in part due to the need to have regular general elections that we have a situation where no government can make a long-term decision about climate. I don't think our parliamentary democracy would be improved by, say, having general elections only every 10 years (which still might not have been long enough for past governments to act, anyway). So I think it might be possible to hold the view that our parliament is democratic but needs special forms of democracy, such as citizens assemblies, from time to time, to meet the needs of longer-term problems. But even that is probably too simple. It isn't only the climate crisis that is a long term problem, there are loads of others, too. One of them has to be corporate control of the press. Our democracy is significantly marred by the populist nonsense in the Daily Mail and the Sun, and although the left wing press is my more natural home, I think the Guardian is very able to be populist in other ways too. But blaming the press is also a little too easy - I have a PhD and much of that contained sociology and political philosophy and I have to admit that it is barely adequate for me to understand the ways that political ideologies work. I think that the world is more complex than most people are either able to understand or have a desire to try to understand. Ultimately I think we also need to blame our democracy for not defending itself in the last 30 years. There has been a predominant idea that political thinking goes nowhere, and politicians should abdicate their responsibility to lead by allowing the market to decide. I think I understand that some of this was pure greed, but much of it was also because in the 20th century we saw that political philosophies of various kinds seemed to do the world a lot of harm. So we thought that we could do without them... turns out that you can't. Unregulated capitalism seems to be eating itself to death. If that is correct, then maybe it partly explains why we are so vulnerable... we have a generation people who have not been encouraged to think well, politically... as if politics is not relevant now. But even that is probably too simple because it implies that people were more clued up in the past and I'm not sure that is the case. Whatever the reality, I think it is true that the law currently does not protect the planet and that includes us. 50% of the wildlife on this planet has gone in my lifetime and no law existed to stop that and no law is currently being seriously considered to stop that. While that is the case, the law is quite obviously immoral and idiotic. I think it is therefore true that we cannot act to save this crisis within the law and that is why I am supporting XR. My aim in doing so is to get laws changed so that I can once again act within them. I see that others here are saying that it is too late anyway. I think it may be, but if we all act as if it is too late then it definitely is. But in any case, we I think we still have a duty to act well even in the face of futility. After all, all human life ends but that doesn't mean that it doesn't matter how you live your life. That is how I see it, anyway. Whether I die in my 80's or I die early from climate related famine, I plan to live as well as I can.

For which privileged beings shall we prevent this extinction? Why yell now? Why act now? Still not talking about a holistic justice. Very nicely done. A fine exposition of the problem and the proposal to try and fix it. Just one mistake: You can't get 200m sea level rise - there isn't that much ice on the planet. 200 feet is 60m, which is about how much SLR you'd get from melting all the ice in the world, so perhaps this was a feet/m confusion. And one quibble: People can of course live on a hothouse earth (she suggested it would be impossible for humans to live there). It'll be nice and tropical at the poles, but potentially far too hot in many other latitudes, so it'd be only a small fraction of current population, but not totally inhospitable everywhere. Civilisation would be almost certain not to survive such a transition of course.

That is correct, it would be very difficult to show the full time line in the same scale. And as she points out - it doesn't change the fact that modern humans (at least since language was developed) has always lived in a climate and thus ecosystem without the levels of heat we are facing. Mind that several of the bigger deviations in the graph even earlier are also associated with global massinstinctions.

I think say's saying we're not going to rise to the occasion. We are so enmeshed in our lifestyles, we're unable to change our course. Business and governments are addicted to money and power.. They may agree to XR's demands, but they won't change their behavior. So I think the most important question you can ask yourself is "what do I want to do with my life if I only have 5 - 10 years left? Some suggestions (not in order of importance): 1. improve the quality of your life - only do things you'd do with a limited time to live. (the quality will improve as you shorten the allotment). 2. disconnect from your electronic world - start with one day a week; spend some time with yourself. 3. read "How to change your mind" by Michael Pollan. 4. make a list of your regrets and a plan to get them off the list. 5. spend time with (or make new) friends who understand our situation (XR is a good place to start). 6. read "Tibetan Book of the Dead" or "Tibetan Book of Living and Dying" It's possible that greed and hatred may feel so threatened by XR that they will try to extinguish it. If that is the case, XR will offer us a wonderful opportunity to die for what we believe in (a planet that supports biological life). And that's no trivial matter.
@jayz88392 жыл бұрын
Wonderful opportunity to die... But it’s not a cult right? You are the one trying to wield power over other ppl by force and intimidation, it’s called fascism and it bypasses democracy. Saying democracy is broken so it needs to ben rid of, is like saying the law doesn’t always work how you like it so there should be no laws.

Is the house really on fire? It took 8 years for the record temperature in England to creep up by a ½ of a degree. Is that runaway warming? Emotional, knee-jerk policies are almost always counterproductive. What XR are asking for would require huge investment and infrastructure projects, really huge. There would be massive environmental impacts. And the money required would have to be taken away from other budgets. People would suffer. Cold kills far more people than heat, and nothing saves lives like prosperity, that is a quantifiable fact.

How will this turn out any differently than Brexit? From the USA, this looks like a annulment of the popular will. I missed the part where randomly selected people will serve. Are they to be drafted or conscripted? How does anyone become free of corporate influences? Wouldn't a random selection just fold in the people who are particularly vulnerable to corporate influence? I am a little skeptical of facilitated deliberation. In the US there used to be a theory that mentally challenged children could be trained by facilitated learning. It failed fair testing. In the USA we give our leaders a set time of wielding power but the parliamentary system brings the end of power to those who propose too much sacrifice too soon. If the other 96.5% of the population become disenchanted with the 3.5% of people who are engaging in the process, how will that be handled.? I think fair warning is given that the group plans what might be termed tyrannical demands on the majority by showing so much enthusiasm for war time sacrifice. If you disagree, are you a traitor? This movement seems to be taking on the flavor of the Children's Crusade. Nobody knows how many of the children ended up as slaves but I think there will be a revolt once people start to feel like tax slaves. I suggest you re-read Plato's Republic. Plato did not like democracy because the logical result was that the old people would take advantage of the young people. This is certainly happening in the USA. Also I remind you that the father of the leader of the Children's Crusade was lynched by the parents who lost their children to the collective madness.

But when you have a system that gives a potential to have a group of people who DONT KNOW ANYTHING about the problem at hand. We end up going in the WRONG direction. This what I understood from what your people had told us about the people/citizens assembly. You would need to look closer to the Aboriginal culture. You're answers are with them. Now, I'm nit saying to turn everyone tribal(as some ignorant people love to say), what im saying is, the Aboriginal peoples had a balance when living with nature. They understood nature and what it could do for them NATURALLY. Aswell as what 'they' could do for the earth so as to not disrupt it. There is much to learn, and little time to do it. well THIS environmentalist is quite sure we need to increase nat gas production, vastly increase nuclear power project development, end the failed weather-dependent and resource-intensive "renewables" fever and build a high-energy lower carbon future for humankind - resulting in lowered birthrates, higher literacy, better health outcomes, higher rates of recyclingb and energy abundant prosperity for ever more inhabitants of this globe. And full speed ahead with deep-drilled geothermal research.

Your activities in raising public awareness are well placed but somehow achieve minimum impact upon the political elite. You clearly need to widen your scope beyond demonstrating and Involve your talented academics in formulating and presenting to the House of Commons a viable economic alternative; an alternative that places everyone ‘on the same page’. This may ‘wet the appetite ‘ for a major shift in the current political stand-off - thereby elevating your cause for change. Activate your academics more effectively - have them solely present your views at the media interface so as to avoid professional journalists humiliating a non academic representing your group. Cheers

You mention 415 even worse! #Capitalism DOES COST THE FUTURE - it COSTS IMMENSELY... I understand your thinking yet this can cause miscommunication now and in the future... Think you should rather say and modify your presentation to consider Capitalism - 'does not weigh the costing of' - or rephrase o.O Maybe use the term quantify..? Primary problem is living based around capitalism and division of humanity based on identity, there is no way out of this unless we get out of these systems collectively...else this is just delaying the obvious...only way to change us is to start with children as they haven't collected too much garbage of greed based systems... adults are too hooked on trappings of current social states to switch including me! For example, just look at our education system, it is an assembly line to produce humans largely to exploit each other and accumulate....

@@charlottexroyalty7819 It would not take centuries to take down capitalism. The religion of capitalism is all belief-based smoke & mirror nonsense. If a comet were to crash on earth (or some other catastrophe was to happen to us), nobody would be checking the stock market LOL We would all be gathering together supplies and people to secure our preservation. Our system of capitalism could even end overnight, depending on how bad the catastrophe, right? Climate change is going to end capitalism whether we like it or not within the near future, or we are going to change capitalism into something that isn't capitalism as known today, in order to curb business as usual CO2 emissions. “We have a finite environment - the planet. In this presentation it is shown without the error band. Look at the original and note that the error band for the first 750 years, about 1 degree, is larger than the overall increase in temperature claimed, about 0.85 degree.

And what about sending rockets and all sorts of equipment up to the outer hemisphere are these projects good for the stabilisation of earths core? What about British railways contribution? They are cutting down multi millions of trees all to enhance the effects of global warming. With the dissemination of trees the earth will become eroded and wild-life endangered. But know this there is a God whose prophet foretold 'He will bring to ruin those ruining the earth'. Jug Head A man-made computer software algorithm generated it, and the algorithm is rigged to produce a hockey stick shape regardless what data were entered. Like everything else found in the rigged world of “climate science,” the hockey stick graph was a fraud the day it was generated. Michael Mann didn’t like being called a fraud by his critics, so he sued them for defamation. One of those lawsuits was concluded by the Supreme Court of British Columbia, Canada, which threw out Mann’s lawsuit against Dr. Tim Ball. Not only did the court grant Ball’s application for dismissal of the nine-year, multi-million dollar lawsuit, it also took the additional step of awarding full legal costs to Ball.
