Global climate change is not the people's fault, it is the policies perpetrated for centuries that caused the situation. We are simply puppets in a world that Do Not Belong To Us. We are cattle, laboratory experiments and the experiment is over. They are closing the Lab. We are fucked. It's simple.

At least so far, not a mention of population control. It is troubling that population reduction isn't a centerpiece of the "transformational strategies for the near future. From what I understand, the "Green Revolution", which saved humanity at one stage, is now one of the drivers of the predicament we're in. I would like to know more about this and why it's being neglected as one part of the effort to deal with the issue.

I hate this attitude just as much as you do (I suppose), but I don't understand how you can say this. Aren't you "here", too? Isn't there good people, things you love, animals, children, songs? This "civilisation" must change, and should have been better for it, for a looong time (and I said so, and nearly always was an outsider for it). But I don't think genereralizing is good. It's more complex than that, in every culture there is better and worse individuals and if you don't want to generalize other civilizations why this one?

Grace Lee Boggs said "reimagine". It is easier for me. At 2 yrs I saw through the window a bond demolition my neighbour's home. I know conflict and vulnerability. For my first 14 yrs we had food rationing. I remember the fear of invasion and tyranny. But I remember community, our Queen's coronation and my first ice cream. I remember the joy in the small things and pleasures hard won. My great grandchildren will grow up with hope and purpose, it is the human condition. It is my children and grand children that will hurt the most, until they find purpose in the very small things.

Late evening before last, I walked my dog to the top of a hill partially overlooking the Pennines and North West of England, including the Wirral and Cheshire as far as the Welsh mountains. While ascending, I was struck by the most unusual intermittent waves of heat that moved across the land, and through us. I felt the energy of the world forests and felled trees of recent time dissipating, and a strong sense of what is to come. People of society everywhere have no real idea of what is to come, of what the lies have done to their children let alone grandchildren, especially those who choose not yet to feel these things, but to think money, medicine, modern chemical and machine is going to save any of us is a wishful and non practical delusion; those things, actions and attitudes are what have brought us to this BRINK. I've been ignored and laughed at while warning at least everyone in my home town, since I awoke to truth that we are on the brink of no return for the past 28 years. The suffering of the many have not yet begun, but it will, while I witness with regrettable disappointment as so many continue to cause the 'ship' to sink; it will be slow and increasingly disturbing. 26/08/2019

46:20 The farmer's data may be correct but the net calories produced are far less per unit area of land and there is not enough land on Earth to support this "agro ecological" conversion with the current population; this approach might work for 500m but not for 8000m people. The studies have been done and they conclude that growing and feeding soy to cows generates fewer GHG than "grass fed" cows but of course is NOT carbon neutral.

An excellent discussion, but I was very disappointed in Dr Read talking nonsense about the fire risk of spent fuel pools in civilisational collapse. It's impossible for fuel rods to catch fire after they've been in the pool for a few months. It's pretty hard to imagine circumstances in the UK where this would be a real risk of fuel having been just removed and somehow all the water getting removed from the pool, and it not being possible to top it up for a few months. Nuclear power is low-carbon, and an important part of our decarbonisation effort. Using artifical fear of ridiculously low risks to prematurely shut it down is not helpful. Even Greens should at least discuss this stuff on the basis of real science - i.e. they should 'tell the truth'. Read should know better IMHO. ansnuclearcafe.org/2014/06/10/spent-fuel-pool-fire-risk-goes-to-zero-a-few-months-after-reactor-shutdown/ I would love to join the Green Party, but every time I hear anti-science like this it pushes me away. Facts matter.

Who is going to top it up if society collapses. That is the point. "If there is a prolonged interruption of cooling due to emergency situations, the water in the spent fuel pools may boil off, possibly resulting in radioactive elements being released into the atmosphere." - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spent_fuel_pool. It usually helps to do a modicum of research before commenting. Whilst I already knew that spent fuel pools needed monitoring, I went ahead and found you a link. It took 3 minutes.

The built environment is not fit for purpose. It needs retrofitting or replacing or part one and part the other. Autonomous EV taxis would help, along with house and other building insulation. But really it is too spread out. Sprawl requires that everyone has to do a lot more travelling than they would in compact living arrangements. We have been getting it wrong for a long time now and we are still getting it wrong. There are an extra 83 million people on the planet year on year and they all need housing and transporting to and from all the day to day places as well as jetting off once or twice a year to more distant places. Much of this at present relies on fossil fuels that add more and more carbon to the atmosphere.

I'd like to see some more exploration of potential collapse scenarios. I think it's critical to discuss, in plain language, what systems will fail and when, as well as the tipping points preceding those failures, so that the average person can begin to see through the media smokescreen and recognize the truth of what's going on. This is of particular importance in the US, where the media works overtime to distract and deny the connections between extreme weather events and catastrophic climate change.

What is alarming regarding food insecurity is the loss of soils and soil fertility which has been of great concern for decades. Added to this the insecurity of water availability whether that is too little or too much. Then Biodiversity loss of our pollinators, recyclers, regenerators etc. The biggest one though from what I see is the Massive Disconnect we have as a species with our environment. Pesticide use can be rduced by planting in guilds which would require an increase in rural jobs. Crop rotation reduces the amount of nitrogen needed in agriculture, intorducing a nitrogen budget with targets would reduce the use of nitrogen, save energy in manufacturing and reduce nitrous oxide emissions from farming. Nitrous oxide is a powerful greenhouse gas and damages the ozone layer so there are major benefits in reducing nitrogen fertiliser usage.

Not vegan? Not serious The study, published in the journal Science, created a huge dataset based on almost 40,000 farms in 119 countries and covering 40 food products that represent 90% of all that is eaten. It assessed the full impact of these foods, from farm to fork, on land use, climate change emissions, freshwater use and water pollution (eutrophication) and air pollution (acidification). “A vegan diet is probably the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth, not just greenhouse gases, but global acidification, eutrophication, land use and water use,” said Joseph Poore, at the University of Oxford, UK, who led the research. “It is far bigger than cutting down on your flights or buying an electric car,” he said, as these only cut greenhouse gas emissions. The new research shows that without meat and dairy consumption, global farmland use could be reduced by more than 75% - an area equivalent to the US, China, European Union and Australia combined - and still feed the world. Loss of wild areas to agriculture is the leading cause of the current mass extinction of wildlife.

You make the statement that 'life is wonderful'. many many humans do not have that perspective and would love to have the offer of voluntary euthanasia in this end of times type scenario. Also, The idea of the musicians on the titanic was very much one which appeals to many folks... Acceptance of the probable fate ahead and thus some folks providing the necessary comfort. Also, comfort for those who know the end is nigh. And, distraction for those many who are, for many possible reasons, oblivious of the coming catastrophe, or who simply don't care, thus much criminality and chaos being avoided as long as possible.

Veganism gets them every time. Eve those people are unable to think it throu. They also want to keep their bad habits. Also: telling people that they have to stop eating meat takes away their will for life. Eating meat is esential to many peoples lives. If they cant eat meat, life is not worth living for them. "This civilisation is finished and what I mean by that is the the only way we are going to get through this crisis without there being some kind of collapse event is if we completely transform everything so much so that it wouldn't be recognised as this civilisation" No, practically speaking we're going to have to go with what we've got, making the best possible use of our industrial civilisation in order to remedy its deep faults and that will require a huge economic mobilisation on a global scale which is possible, we've already done that on a smaller scale during the two world wars, though obviously we've got to stop war fighting As with many eco-pessimists he totally underestimates the potential of our industrial civilisation, if it is properly managed. We only have twelve years to get major measures in place, that means a rainbow alliance on climate action and we're going to need to be very positive and constructive. "So I’ve even started doing a little ‘prepping’. E.g. I’ve bought a bullet-proof vest for my partner and I." Well I won't be buying a bullet proof vest anytime soon!

Thanks Mandra, very few people get the big picture of this. There has been such a big push to 'go vegan' to save the world with very little verification of the impact this will have. Silvopasturing is such a beautiful way to go. We must stop feeding cattle grain - it is force feeding them junk food in a cell, it degrades the land and is a gross misuse of crops. Cattle need to eat grass - it is the most direct way to get sun (new) energy into the food cycle and into the soil.

I have livestock myself and there is no way that you put in the same amount of CO2 you get out. Farm animals get fed by foder from outside. Just calculate how much a cow eats per day and then calculate how big of a grassland you need. Then calculate how much calories you wuld get from the same amount of land if you would be eating the grain istead of the cow. Yizzz people! I am a biologist - I kow what I am talking about. Essentially , we cannot use carbon based resources any longer. Any mitigation strategy boils down to leaving coal, oil and even natural gas in the ground. If you don’t restrict access to these resources you will not affect the continuing growth of carbon dioxide parts per million in the atmosphere. Presently, the long term graph of carbon parts per million and the corresponding increase in global temperature , even with the enormous increase in renewable energy resources or any other forms of mitigation , has not changed whatsoever. The conclusion must be ,therefore , that the mining of use and transport of all carbon based resources must be made thoroughly illegal. There are ,however , certain situations of carbon use for which there are ,presently, no alternatives. These must necessarily be grandfathered in , for instance, flying and cement manufacture ,albeit the continued provisioning of these and things like them would need be ever more inhibited. There needs to be a rolling protocol ,so to speak. For example, a public utility fueled by coal in a certain locale would by law be replaced by the same utility fueled by renewables or nuclear power once the new sources of power were put in place. This must be accomplished very quickly,as we all know. From locale to locale this work must be done. There really is no choice. Carbon resources must be kept in the ground or we simply will not survive. They will become stranded assets, meaning the loss of trillions of dollars to those who own them. Like tobacco but much , much worse those who own these assets must finally allow that their continued use will kill us all but unlike tobacco there must be a well executed plan to essentially ban their use. There was a mistake made and perpetuated some two hundred or so years ago to base our civilization on carbon . This mistake must now be rapidly corrected.
