One of the things I love about right to repair is that it creates a sense of valuing your possessions. A normal person would’ve scrapped this watch as soon as the new one came out and not even bothered to try to get it fixed.
@meetv77002 жыл бұрын
Injecting couple of volts might find the short you're looking for but it is still near impossible repair considering tiny components. I love that you salvaged usable parts before scrapping the remaining watch.
@Kilohercas2 жыл бұрын
first, if battery is below 3-2.8V, I think BMS would disconnect it completely. so you would not measure any voltage on connector (but you can directly on battery) Second, you could power it with bench supply and see if it's short. if yes, power it with 3A or more and use finger/IPA to see what part is getting hot. and just de-solder it. As example, my notebook failed, so i checked resistance on each capacitor, and what do you know, GPU power capacitor was dead short.

At least you attempted to diagnose and repair it. Most 3rd party shops that I've seen won't do anything aside from replace the display or battery, if that. Clearly, Apple sees these watches as disposable, and encourage the user to just buy a new one. Much like the AirPods. It's sad, but.... they are hugely profitable.
@LordCoeCoe2 жыл бұрын
Apple watches should be "fixable", but not airpods. Look how "tight" everything is. Trying to remove that bottom cap might destroy the airpod and it will look quite ugly.
@mjc09612 жыл бұрын
Much like every product Apple sells, you mean. They don't intend anything to be repairable.
@Dreadpirateflappy2 жыл бұрын
it makes sense though tbh, instead of making someone wait days or weeks for a timely repair they just give someone a new (refurbished) one if under warranty. the cost of repairing these, especially airpods isn't worth it.

I have my original Samsung Galaxy Gear still working today, but yeah software is definitely long obsolete, but at least it still pairs my phone fine and original functions all work, except for dead microphone. It also opens extremely easily, even easier than the Galaxy Watch, as there are no adhesives, rather its water resistance is done by rubber gasket like the galaxy s5
@TheRailroad992 жыл бұрын
As long as the original features still work I think its fair. This is how it should be. Its still sad that smart watches don't comply with an open standard. If Samsung won't update (or block the watch in new versions of) the companion app anymore, its game over
@kztech13192 жыл бұрын
@@TheRailroad99 Yeah I know, well they did end up dropping support for the newest Samsung smartphones to connect to that watch, but that has to do with the difficulty porting jelly bean era ui and old bluetooth standards I guess. But as for my Galaxy S9+, I can keep using it with the galaxy gear, and there are still the very limited app selection that was available initially so Evernote still works I guess?

This is the exact reason I will never use smartwatches. These things go obsolete quickly while traditional watches can last decades with proper care, especially the mechanical ones. I've watched a lot of watch restoration videos that fix watches that are a century old and they still work!

Normal watches and smart watches only really share a name. Their use cases are vastly different. So I don't think its really a good idea to treat them as the same class of possession.

Mechanical watches are jewellery, they are status goods. Smart watches are smartphones on your wrists. Swatches are good enough to tell time, being very honest with you. Get a Casio G-shock if you really want to be safe and reliable. With proper care, they would run for centuries for a minute fraction of the price of a mechanical watch.

Sometimes electronics just randomly die. I recently had my Series 7 Apple Watch display stop working. The watch was still functioning just nothing showed up on the display. No signs of physical damage or water damage and since it was less than a year old and still under the manufacturer warranty Apple replaced it for free. After shipping it to a repair facility and determining it could not be repaired they shipped me another device.

The saying that a luxury watch can be handed down generations is no longer true with brands like Rolex. Rolex is a production watch, once they stop production of a model/movement and inventory is exhausted, repair is not feasible. That's why some secondary dealers will not accept a watch at all. Unique to luxury watches, they must be original, no aftermarket parts or the value will tumble. Some high-end brands will make a part for you but the cost may be prohibitive.
