What Went Wrong? | Hailey's On It!

So, Hailey's On It just had its' Season 1 finale, and with no news of a renewal, it's looking like that may be the last episode. And it ended on a cliffhanger!
So, how did a show with a great premise and some pretty serious star power end up in this situation? In this video, I discuss some of the issues with the show that I think probably hindered its' popularity.

Hinging a show on a plot device that we are told in the first episode will inevitably be solved immediately turned me off it. Sure, obviously all DTVA shows will solve their conflicts but it just felt so dumb and blatant. It also had the same issue SVTFOE did where there is a plot device that means the two main characters will end up together but then still tries to act like there’s a possibility they won’t. (And for the record with Kim Possible, there are zero hints of them ending up together in the show and the creators admitted they threw it in the movie to ‘give nerds a win’ lol. They then were forced to work around it in the renewal season.)

And I’ve seen people say that the season finale makes her unlikeable, I don’t agree with that, much like Molly in “I Wanna Dance With Some-Ollie”, I think that Hailey is finally doing something for herself for once. The whole thing with the app is stupid, but so is making such a huge deal out of kissing Scott in the first place.

@@RealGilbertGan I don't see the ending of Milo Murphy's Law as a cliffhanger. I see it as an open-ended ending. They saved the alien planet from bad luck which was their main objective. The ship crashing at the end of the episode felt more like a "here we go again" gag. Because Milo will always have bad luck. They probably did find a way back to earth and all the loose ends of the season were tied up.

My gripe with the show is that it keeps dragging its heels regarding the actual crucial parts of the plot; taking too much time to dive into the questions that have been looming in the background since episode 1, like "Why does her list determine the fate of the world?", "Who is sending all of the robots?", "What is the time-traveling scientist keep from Hailey", or even "Is there some connection with Hailey and the scientist?"

I feel like the show would've worked if they subverted expectations by having Hailey kissing Scott at the end of episode one, and then she realizes it wasn't as bad as she thought it would be, Scott's still her friend, etc. Only for it to be revealed that there's a much more embarrassing thing on the to-do list, which wouldn't be touched upon until the end of the season.

That's something I saw people talking about on Reddit, they left us no breadcrumbs to theorize on. The one thing they gave us was that reveal of the chaos bots' battery being Hailey's invention and literally in the same episode they told us ''Nope, she just created a power source that the creator of the chaos bots used on their inventions''. Like imagine if future Hailey had regretted completing the list and created the chaos bots to try and stop her past self from completing it? But no, they outright tell us that's not it and ruin any fun and mystery behind it.

It wouldn’t make sense to continue the story into season 2 since it would make sense to focus on the bigger story of Hailey saving the world 3. Hayley’s On It is one of those shows that had too many cooks in the kitchen, if you know what I mean, as the story seems to be a mess. And the characters are all mediocre and sometimes forgettable. And the romance was just embarrassing. It’s another, will they won’t they, bullcrap with Hayley and Scott. And people saying that the will they won’t they crap in Inuyasha was bad. At leas that show had some interesting characters and a satisfying conclusion. Plus the humor is trying way too hard to be like the 2017 Duck Tales Show, Owl House or even Rick and Morty with the characters trying way too hard to look cool while telling jokes and snarky remarks.

It bothered me that Becker was never treated as a serious romantic rival to Scott, her crush was introduced at the end of one episode, and then dismissed the next time she appeared. The whole "dating your sibling's love interest" plotline had potential, and it was never used for anything. Imagine if at the end of season 1, Becker went to the dance with Hailey instead of Sanjay, that would've felt a lot more dramatic than it being some guy we've never seen before. Especially after The Owl House was cancelled, I'm getting the impression that Disney just doesn't want to have gay/bi main characters again, only side characters.

While I still don't mind the concept of Hailey completing the list to save the world, I agree with you that it isn't 100% clear as to how completing her list will do that. If her saving the world starts with winning the young person of the year award and being noticed by the mayor, then maybe there's one item on her list that might lead to that, but it wouldn't be because of completing the entire list. Also, I wouldn't really mind if the sci-fi/saving the world plot wasn't there, as I mainly appreciate the show for how fun it is, for the characters, and the friendship/romance. Hailey's On It would still be a pretty fun show if it was about Hailey completing her list items just because she finally wants to or if, as you mentioned, some personal thing motivates her to do so. Also, I don't completely agree on Hailey being a passive character, but to make her a more active character, I think it would've been better if rather than completing list items she wrote down in the past, that she has to decide on one new thing she wants to do each week. There was one episode where she wrote down something new in the list and Beta freaked out, saying she couldn't add new stuff to the list, but then it turns out that nothing bad happened from her adding a new list item. Someone I've been talking to about the show thought it would've been a better idea to have Hailey start out with a blank list/journal that she adds stuff to throughout the show and I agree with them. Hailey could've been a person who just doesn't know what she wants to do with her life, so she tries a bunch of new things until she's finally found her true passion/purpose. It also would've better if, rather than Hailey having a crush on Scott from the beginning and writing down that she wants to kiss him, Hailey could've developed feelings for him during the show and THEN decided to write that she wants to tell him that she likes him someday. Speaking of Hailey and Scott, I have a lot of thoughts about the finale, too many to write in one comment, but the main thing that was frustrating about it is (SPOILERS) how they were so many unnecessary things stopping Hailey and Scott from finally being together - the problem is not the romance, the problem is that it seems like they're going to overcomplicate the romance now when Hailey and Scott should have a simple love story. While I liked the moment when Scott finally realized he likes Hailey in the finale, it would've been better if he started liking Hailey earlier in the season, as well as realizing he likes Hailey because of a moment the two have together rather than because the phone app said they're a perfect match. Then, if Scott knows that he likes Hailey earlier in the season, both of them would be secretly crushing on each other until Hailey finally tells Scott how she feels at the dance. That would've been a great way to conclude the "hiding their feelings" part of their romance and get to the part where they're a couple. Of course, I don't think much will change once they're together, they're just going to continue having fun completing list items together and their relationship will be stronger because they no longer have to keep secrets from each other. I absolutely want a season 2, but I don't want them to drag out the romance storyline until the very end of the season. I hope that within the first few episodes of season 2, they have Hailey and Scott finally discover that they both like each other instead of waiting until the very end. Thank you for making this video! I've became a big Hailey's On It fan as of recently, but I'm absolutely fine with you talking about the problems you believe the show has. I don't think the show is perfect either, but I still really enjoy it and I hope the show gets a chance to prove that it can be even better in season 2. 3:46 Thats the whole joke of the show. Hailey's On It is basically one giant joke poking fun at the Butterfly effect. The Butterfly effect is a theory that says even the most small changes can have a giant impact on the future. One example of the Butterfly effect is the Simpsons Treehouse of Horror V segment Time and Punishment. In that segment, Homer goes back in time to the prehistoric era and kills a mosquito. Homer killing a mosquito somehow caused Ned Flanders to take over the earth in the present. Hailey cleaning the couch should have nothing to do with stoping climate change in the future and its ridiculous that such a small action would effect climate change. Thats part of what makes the show funny. Something as small as cleaning out the couch some how had an effect on the future. Another reason why the list has mundane activities in it is because Hailey is only 14 and a lot of the list items are things a 14 year old could actually do.

Personally I’m wondering if either A. The future depends on only a select few items on the list but they don’t know which ones specifically so they’re just saying it’s best to do them all to prevent any potential butterfly effects. Or B. The scientist is completely making this up and is trying to get Hailey to do something specific on the list to change the future for some reason. Remember that she looked like she was never going to do that list until the scientist basically told her the world depends on it. Ergo, this might mean Haily didn’t do the list in the future originally. Meaning this isn’t about maintaining the future, it’s about changing it. Heck, maybe Haily was right about her future self making the bots and that future self recording the scientist gave was some AI deepfake or something.

And this is exactly why DuckTales was smart. They expected to be cancelled every season so they purposefully ended the episode in a way that would conclude the whole show. Buut if they got renewed, they had this little clip at the end that could segue into another. This just goes to show you, never get too comfortable with your show - you never know when the network might pull the plug. I do think a second season is off the table at this point. But I hope they at least get a special or something to wrap things up. Instead of… this!

They could have easily told the whole story in one season. If the kiss was always the focal point, they would have needed to jump through several hoops to keep that interesting in long-form format. 14:50 same. Me and my little sister, who is in the show's main demographic but is even more of a DTVA fan than her peers, got bored. The Ghost and Molly McGee kept us excited. We were eager to see what would happen next with the ghost council in season 1 and the Chens in season 2. HOI felt like it was dragging on, though. We watched them do mundane tasks while just bugging us about that kiss for forever, at least that's what it felt like. It felt like "Hey look! We're begging you, ship them!" I really liked the premise of HOI, and I supported it and even defended it at the start, but it just couldn't keep my interest. The first episode for me was very interesting. But after that it progressed into the way I previously described. 15:48 also yeah I totally relate to MML ending. I still love that show; I like it more than HOI

to be honest, considering that the show has ended on a cliffhanger, it makes the plot feel realistic in a certain way: now we know why Climate Change *will* kill us after all, because a 14 year old gave up on her "to do list"... I really think that the time travel stuff could've been avoided. Like, Beta really is the worst part of the show, but if they REALLY wanted to keep him, maybe it could've been... Something else. Oh, what if Beta was actually a list item that went accidentally too well. Like, she wanted to build an actual android and she succeeded perfectly, but was half asleep while doing it so she can't recreate it without killing him to reverse engineering him. And the chaos bots are actually made by "Alpha". Hailey's first attempt to make an android that went wrong and she discarded it, thinking it was broken. So it ran away and started to build its own little minions just to mess with her. Alpha is trying to make Hailey fail, Beta is the voice of encouragement and Scott is the voice of fun. Because the time travel stuff is really a second thought in this show. I think it's relevant in, like, 3 episodes tops. And if it's not important it should be removed.

I have to agree with you about many things about this show. Also, if the show needed to end on a cliffhanger. Here's what I would have done. Before the dance, Hailey admits she loves Scott only for him to tell her that he likes he as a friend. Heartbroken, she doesn't go to the dance. But after a time glitch, she said F it and goes to kiss Scott. They meet up kiss (figuratively and literally) and make up. A few Chaos Bots run into A.C. Whom they recognize and commutate with him. Implying that he made them or have the big bad behind them manipulate him. Also, the list should include things that would help the environment.

I’m a fan of haileys on it! I don’t have cable so I watch on Disney + when the new episodes comes out I watch them on repeat 3X at least and watch in the background! I really don’t want them to cancel this gem!! I’m tired of shows I love getting shortened for no good reason, especially when shows from our childhood can EASILY come back even after a decade of so. Yes the Wizards of Waverly Place reboot is live action, but regardless. I got really invested in Haileys on it since the first 5 episodes came out on Disney Plus over a year ago! You make good points. The show wasn't all that in my opinion. The viewership wasn't that good and the show itself wasn't very entertaining. Everything seemed rushed and outta place. Hailey's personality was way too inconsistent throughout the show. The kiss plot was a drag and most of the characters were pretty boring so as much as I don't Ike shows being canned early, this is one of the few shows that I wouldn't mind not coming back. However, if it does somehow get another season, then they better fix EVERYTHING and I do mean EVERYTHING in order to make people watch and enjoy Hailey's On It more.

After that finale, I am certain Sanjay Singh is not what he seems. The fact that he just happened to show up around the same time as the dance where Hailey planned to confess to Scott just as the two were told by that popular app that they weren't a perfect fit for each other shouldn't be a huge coincidence. Also, they shouldn't have spent a tentpole episode on a Christmas special, they should've had it be about Hailey, Scott and Beta going to the future with the Professor to find whoever created the Chaos Bots and try to stop them in the present. And it turns out the creator is actually a future version of Sanjay. And one more thing, recently there were some HOI scripts for what might be/could've been a second season that were leaked, which opens right where the first season ended with Beta about to tell Scott that Hailey has feelings for him, but Beta can't because there's some kind of protocol in place that forces him to play disco music whenever he tries to reveal the kiss. If season 2 does happen, I'm suspecting a major plotpoint will be Beta trying to get around this.

Love the Doc Brown quote at the end! Personally, I never got very into the show. It felt like a very heavy handed attempt at making another Phineas and Ferb but without the whimsical nature to it. Almost like the characters weren't really trying to do something interesting. Hailey as a passive character isn't so bad, but she needs to have skin in the game apart from "Stopping the Terminator". In fact, if there was an actual Terminator hunting her, it would be more interesting. The two kids being forced to be together for the sake of the plot never works out in the end. Either their dynamic doesn't work or they do it for reasons that have no logic. I much prefer your version of what the show could be about, having Hailey be forced to move by the end of the summer and deciding to do the items on her list as a way to remember her time in the one home she ever knew. I will say that I liked Hailey actually standing up for herself and saying that she'll make those choices because she wants to and not because someone else tells her to.

I could take it or leave it. It was fun in concept, but execution was kind of lacking. Most of the time the list items were either too mundane or Hailey completed them way to easily or on an obvious technicality. And while the humor could be clever, a lot of the time it was way too cringe for my tastes. Honestly I’m more annoyed because the Time glitch shows giant robots as well as fire. I was hoping that the Professor and the Chaos bots constant tampering with time would play a part in the later half of the season.

One of the things I like about Monsters At Work is that each season ends in a way that even if it doesn't get another season at least it's a proper conclusion. I remember a lot of cartoons outside of United States that have their first season end on a cliffhanger like 50/50 Heroes. I think it's a bad idea to end your show's first season on a cliffhanger unless you know that you are getting renewed.

Knowing just how badly the show has been botched, I would like to declare that it's kind of a good thing the show got cancelled, because the premise of the show is extremely flawed at best and incredibly egregious at worst. I'd rahter not see how far the writers are willing to butcher this show in terms of writing and nuance anymore than they already have within the span of a single season. Disney is already spreading themselves thin with their terrible influence, and Hailey's On It is no exception. Plus, we all know damn well that climate change is NOT reversible, despite what the wide-eyed optimists are forcing us to believe.

I know these shows get compared to each other a lot but I think _Saving Me_ did the whole “travel to the past to save the future” thing much better. In Saving Me Bennett Bramble grows up to be a genius tech billionaire who’s only realized at the start of the show that he doesn’t like the person he’s become, likely having this revelation due to his estrangement from his family. So he uses his genius and hoards of money to build a pseudo Time Machine to change his past for his better future. I feel like _Saving Me_ works because the “saving the future” in this instance isn’t some vague idea, it’s not saving the future from some catastrophe, it’s saving Bennett Bramble from himself. Plus, the catastrophe that happened to Bennett Bramble, his estrangement from his family, isn’t something he can fix in the present. Also, the way the time travel works is really nuanced in my opinion. Old Bennett Bramble can only project himself to the past version of himself. Old Bennett cannot interact with the past apart from communicating with his younger self so he is limited in changing the past by the fact that he really has to convince his past self to be the one that changes. Plus plus Old Bennett isn’t at all better than his younger self, he is just aware that he is a bad person and that’s about it, so his attempts at making a better future only end up making things worse and often both Bennett’s learn by failing at whatever they thought would make things better. Just talking about this show makes me giddy! It’s a really great show! It’s definitely corny in places, it feels a bit like a show that was ripped straight from PBS Kids. But it’s good nonetheless. It’s also completely free! Both seasons! No ads even! It’s on BYUtv. It is a Christian network so I understand if you’d rather not engage with that. Hailey being held hostage by the contrivance of her own list definitely was a HUGE turn off and I really tried to give this show a chance. But, even above Hailey being a passive hostage in her own show, I just hate how the list item is very simply, "Kiss Scott Denoga", like that wording in it of itself is not romantic in the slightest, right? So for the whole narrative to force the romantic implication and get hijacked by that presumption is just... really weird? Like, just kiss the guy on the cheek one time he does a huge SOLID for you during a list item and check it off, next. I seriously love Hailey's on it, I will be the first to roll their eyes when they make the girl and boy best friend a will they won't they relationship, and it annoys me in this show to no end. But I love this show, not for the romance, not for the plot, and while I do like the characters, the reason I love this show so much is because of the humor. It feels like it's the first show I've seen to take parts of Gen Z humor and add little bits of it in without being obnoxious about it and making it cringe. Like when Kristine breaks up with Scott and he's depressed and he talks about the meaninglessness of life with the dude on the bench and the dude just jumps off the bridge and we don't see him for the rest of the episode, I was dying laughing for like ten minutes. This kinda pessimistic "this is my 13th reason" kind of joke done so subtlely is crazy to me for Disney. It adds subtle slang like "cringe" into the script without using stuff like "rizz" and "skibidi" which would make the show unwatchable in six months, I mean there are some jokes that are heavy handed, but like 90% of the jokes hit for me. The entire luger episode was a win for me. In conclusion, I love this show, it's really freaking funny, and Scott Denoga is the best Disney channel character ever./j

I mean, obviously she’d change her mind and get back to completing the list, but the fact of the matter is that present day Hailey has so little control over her own life that she can’t even date a different boy for a little bit because kissing Scott is so important. I’d argue that it’s actually not *her* future self calling the shots, because the future Hailey we hear about never would’ve had Beta or any knowledge of the future. Remember the 2009 Star Trek movie? The second the chaos bots got sent back in time, this was already an entirely different timeline. My joke about Beta disappearing at the end of the video is more of a joke about how time travel is usually portrayed in movies rather than what would actually happen, because the timeline Beta comes from would still exist, it would just be an alternate reality.

So uh yeah I DO NOT CARE if this show gets canceled on a cliffhanger. I will not miss it whatsoever. The ending you made up is fine by me

Honestly, I was turned off from the first episode. The romance plot line felt incredibly rushed, it felt like it was being shoved down our throats, rather than letting the audience get attached to them naturally. Also, the second half of the episode felt totally disconnected from the first

the thing that turned me off from this show is it presented itself with a less interesting concept than other shows. and presented itself as a kids show front and center, and it obviously still is with shown clips. and of course it makes sense that it would, but I mean it like, it presents itself in a way that pushes away audiences 13+.
