I don't agree with your point that the protagonist should be more of a blank slate like Byleth. Corrin's problem wasn't that he had too much personality, it was just that he was dumb as hell, which is the point of his character because he grew up isolated and unaware of how the world worked. Having blank characters like Byleth is incredibly dull and all of their supports feel like the characters talking to a cardboard cutout, rather than an actual human conversation.

And, everyone was just head over heels for Corrin. Before you make the choice, Takumi’s really distant and cold, but once you go Birthright, he suddenly warms up to you. And, in Revelation, Sakura joins a “traitor” because she “knows they’re not a traitor” despite having known Corrin for like a week. And, her retainers don’t even question her decision to follow her fickle brother/sister. I think that if they made Corrin more serious or if Corrin was actually affected by story events for more than one chapter, they’d be much better.

I think that kinda makes sense to have Corrin have personality with other characters which makes sense because they knew them for a long time. Compared to byleth who shows up and within 2 months everyone has a great relationship with them.

Funktra I still prefer Byleth because the whole story doesn’t revolve around them. Their choices do greatly impact the story, but they’re not the main character like Corrin was. I understand what you’re saying, Byleth still isn’t good, but I think they’re still better than Corrin.

Also the story does revolve around Byleth very selectively meaning it's still there at times and are you also forgetting that Corrin did live in Hoshido for years before being kidnapped while retainers job is to follow and take care of they'r master regardless of they'r decisions so not sure why they would question they'r decisions.

V-jes I am aware of the Church route. I’m trying to say that not everything is revolved around Corrin. The entire Azure Moon route revolves around Dimitri’s relationship with Edelgard. Verdant Wind focuses on Byleth, but Claude, too. And Crimson Flower focuses on Edelgard.

Tbh I feel like a lot of fans, including myself, were very over-hyped about this game. When the development of a "choose your adventure" Fire Emblem was set into motion, I was so excited to finally have a Fire Emblem with multiple endings based choice. I remember distinctively that the promotion was like "each choice counts" or something similar. I was very disappointed when the game ended up being "pay for a overpriced and different path" :/

I feel like people seems forget that Corrin is supposed to be naive and kind, and somewhat dumb. Like Repunzel, they have been trapped in a castle for years and know nothing of how the real world works. They don’t want to believe that their are terrible people which is why they trust sooooo much that it backfires sometimes. Byleth has no heartbeat so it’s understandable why their answers are as dull as cardboard, but in the end ‘blank state’ protagonist will have personality.

Yeah, but Corrin’s still totally unphased by several events. Spoilers for the story, but after Chapter 5, they’re like “yea, my mom’s dead... that happened”, and every death affects them for like, half a chapter. And this isn’t just Corrin. After Flora dies, Corrin interacts with Felicia when they’re in the woods. Felicia seems somewhat unphased that her sister just died. The story feels very rushed.

My problem isn't that Corrin's too naive and dumb, but that they're never really punished for it. The best (or worst, depending on how you look at it) is when they follow that one kid in Revelations, it turns out to be a trap, and his comrades have to come rescue him. And Ryoma says that he did an incredibly stupid thing and is too naive, but that's okay because his kindness is the reason they follow him. Probably not that exact wording, I don't really remember the actual lines and don't want to look for it. But yeah, Corrin's constantly trying to be a white knight kind of character, causing heaps of trouble for other characters because of it, but is never punished for it. It's also annoying how nearly every character (except Takumi, bless him) instantly just falls heads over heels for him. Like...they all just love him, because he's so nice I guess. Another great example is in Conquest where the two families meet and literally all they do is fight over Corrin. No talk about the war, no introspection, no character asking "Hey, Azura was kind of kidnapped out of Hoshido in this route. She okay?" (guess they just kind of forgot she existed at that point). Nope, just arguing and fighting over who loves Corrin more. 🙄

SymphoniaFly You hit it spot on. They played it off as “oh I actually knew I was just being nice uwu” with the whole Anthony thing. What drives me up the wall is that as soon as Corrin goes to Hoshido/Nohr, the Nohrian/Hoshidan royals go feral on them (except for Elise in BR). Sakura, to a lesser extent, but she’s super friendly to Corrin in Chapter 5 but kinda doesn’t really interact with them in Chapter 22. In BR, Xander chases Corrin down at the opera house and Elise has to get in his way so Corrin escapes. Elise (in BR) is the only part of all three Fates games that’s really well written. Leo seems to forget all love he once had for Corrin, Camilla’s... Camilla, Ryoma doesn’t sympathize with Corrin, at all, Hinoka’s like “wow I can’t believe u picked Nohr over me let me kill u”, and then Takumi’s valid I guess. If Corrin actually developed, then I’d like them. Legendary Corrin in Heroes has some dialogue like “This is the path that I chose and I will take the consequences from it,” and that dialogue should’ve been in actual Fates because she seems to have developed. Corrin is easily the worst written lord, but funnily enough, one of the best lords, combat wise. The only ones that outclass them are Edelgard, Dimitri, Sigurd, and RD Ike.

@a HERO that doesn’t know what protect means she’s boring and static. It just doesn’t feel fleshed out enough. She had an interesting backstory and that she has a mother complex because of these events that made her extremely overprotective to a fault. But that’s her only personality trait. With the limited screen time each character has, just having this be the forefront personality every single time sucks cause she had potential to be interesting and has the best design.

I believe that the characters have a lot more depth to them than they appear. But the problem is you have to go through the supports in order to see that. Nobody has time to go through every support so a lot is most in character development. But another problem is that it's only some supports that develop the characters further and there are some that are just foolish, which can be another factor in players not pursuing the supports more. Three Houses does a good job with its supports by cutting down. For example, there are some people you can only go to B with. This gave a creators more time to come up with better supports and not try to write ones that go nowhere.

Interesting to say Corrin's problem is too much personality, while praising Byleth's lack of it. Almost all I've seen find being that Byleth is the weakest character in terms of... well, character in all the roster of 3H, while Corrin is chastised for being dumb and stupid (And, no, being isolated isn't really an excuse, poor education can be an excuse, though). Though, a vast majority do agree that Byleth's issue could've been remended by giving Byleth actually voiced dialogue outside of combat.

@@freeze2711 I think a big reason why Fates was so flawed is be is because Intelligent Systems felt like why were obligated to make a game like Awakening, but was too stressed out to do it in a meaningful way, due to Awakening was suppose to be the last in the series. Going slightly off topic for a moment, it will make sense. When Squaresoft was making Final Fantasy 1, they were about to go bankrupt so they thought this was the end. Thankfully the game sold well, which meant that they continue the series. Then they made FF 2 which was heavily disliked by fans. Final Fantasy 6 and 7 are great because Square no longer had doubt. Sadly the same thing can not be said for Fates, and it wouldn't be until the making of FE Hero's that Intelligent Systems would get rid of their doubt.

I miss this game. I might go back and play it again soon. This game's best thing was it's soundtrack. However, the worst thing about this game is that it was split into 3 separate games, like a Pokemon game. This means that in chapter 6, when you choose your side, you're "choice" was already decided when you bought a version of the game, so there's no real emotional impact, and there's no real choice to make like the developers intended. They should have either just created a singular, straight-forward narrative with no choice involved like FE Awakening, or put all 3 pathways onto one cartridge and let the player have an actual choice.

While I can understand the points you are making. I find myself disagreeing with some of them. To me at least, it felt like you spent too much on the negatives of the game, and not enough on the positives. Not saying you should not spend time talking about the negatives, but there are a lot more positives to fates than negatives. You did not mention CQ's maps and general difficulty, which I find weird since I would argue because of said gameplay, CQ is top tier FE. Corrin's problem, to me at least, wasn't that he was not a silent protagonist. Rather, his dumb decisions (which are a byproduct of his sheltered behavior) tend to go unpunished. Not all the time, as seen with Ryoma's death, and how he/she REALLy felt the consequences, which lead to one of the better moments from the story. Making him blank slate ala byleth with harm rather than help, as it would cut Corrin's admittedly solid supports. I am not gonna defend the writing in the main story. But I will defend the characters and their supports. To me, your point on how "character can be described under one sentence" does not make for a compelling argument against them. With enough mental jumps, any character from any game can be treated as such; "She is just depressed". "He is kind until he is not". "Cool dude". Just like that, I described Marianne, Dimitri, and Claude respectively. See the problem in that argument. I am not saying the cast in Fates is perfect, as it has its problems. The supports are treated as an open-world game; big open field with undeniably interesting things to look at, but you have to travel a distance to get to them. With some characters like Niles and Laslow and Leo having a lot more nuggets than say Peri who consistently has shit supports (except for that amazing Laslow support). But, I would argue those nuggets are plentiful enough in both quantity and quality for the making of a good cast. Mozu is very shy, doubting of herself->she became a soldier at a very young age and just lost her parents and straight the fuck up suffers PTSD in her supports with Jakob. Kagero is very serious about her job->she was placed on that job on a moment's notice as a replacement for his brother's weak physique. Charlotte is chatty, rude, and tomboy-ish but good at feigning at a damsel->so she can support her parents and pay them back for being so loving despite their economy is in shambles. Again, not perfect, But still rock solid. As for the pricing; we cannot deny it is overpriced. But I myself think that it was done in such a way to ensure the game would not flop. Since Awakening helped the series get out of a dangerous hole, they needed the next game to be an ensured success, and what better way to ensure it, than by being inspired by Pokemon. Again, I fully understand the dislike, but from my perspective, it was IS ensuring this game's success. I fully understand your dislike for the game. And while I respect it, I highly disagree with it.

Hmm...I have issues with the whole "Corrin has too much personality" section. For starters; How do you explain Robin? Robin is very clearly an avatar character but most of the fanbase really liked him because he was smart and level headed. Even when things were looking bad for him, he kept a level head and did what he had to. Corrin, on the other hand, is a total idiot. He let's forgiveness get the better of him and he always goes for ideals over reality. And what's worse is he always has people to bail him out because he encountered "a few more enemies than he expected". On top of that, he never develops, he's exactly the same at the start as he is at the end. I get that he wants peace and all that but you can have that while still having characters develop. I can't speak too much for Byleth as I've not yet finished his game but from what I've been hearing from the community, he's pretty much a blank slate. The only 1 so far to properly enforce this character is Robin.

I disagree about the classes. Restrictions in games actually bring about more creativity and strategy. Otherwise, you just end up with ff8 or ff10 characters all looking the exact same, as no doubt people did to their end game awakening rosters with breeding galeforce onto everyone. This is not good game design.

Well in all honesty, not that you may end up reading this (7 months) later, but gender restrictions ARE objectively bad, because they make for some unfortunate implications about gender capabilities. What I think is a good compromise is instead a CULTURAL class restriction, which is ironically what happened with Nohr and Hoshido, though their restrictions still had entire class sets available to them.

Fates needed to be renamed. Birthright - Paint By Numbers or Awakening-Lite. Conquest - Not A Hero or Corrin is the Biggest Idiot. Revelations - Just Read the Wiki Summary or Jokes On You For Spending $100 Buying All Three Paths. I would say Birthright is the best of the 3 games. It sold more units than Conquest and story-wise, it’s the least frustrating of the 3 Fates games. What holds each game back were the intentions of Intelligent Systems. Chiefly, removing key story and lore details to incentivize players to buy the other Fates paths and the storyline DLCs. It compromises each game’s presentation and makes Fates look lopsided as a result.

I haven't played their games so eh. But Byleth though? It's so strange to see Corrin hate still going so strong, and then minuscule (maybe?) hate for Byleth? A character that literally couldn't make it past the prologue without dying in a completely preventable if-there-was-any-intelligence-in-the-avatar way? And in that very same prologue it shows you the power that completely takes away tension for the rest of the game? People can get past that, or worst not realize that if the avatar is supposed to represent you, then the game is calling you stupid, but they'll stick pitch forks at Corrin. In this video in "The Good section," one of the main pros is "playing the game" essentially. Music, Sound, Streamlines battle system, customization. You can play the SIMs in this. The praise I often see for this game, most notably conquest, is map design and objectives being more than 'beat this boss' like most of the other games. That's the stuff I'm interested in. The cons are like everything else. And it's fair to judge it harshly for that, but how much weight should the 'extra' stuff hold? There's a counter argument like "Would you play a fighting game called stick fighter where it has the most amazing combat of all time but the each character is the same stick figure?" No i get that you want play as your Ryus and Scorpions and Kazuyas but how much of the actual gameplay will you sacrifice for it? What went wrong with Fire Emblem Fates? I generally agree and disagree on the class aspect I agree removing gender lock makes classes more unique however Three Houses' way of levelling makes it so you can get any skills (besides gender lock) you want so that is arguably more customizable but I get what you mean personally fire emblem ought to look a bit back into the way classes worked in Fates with the lack of gender lock

First off I want to say that I thought you did a good job presenting your thoughts on this topic. I don't agree that Fire Emblem should be a sandbox, Fates I consider to be the worst game in the series however I also enjoyed listening to your points and perspective on the matter. I dislike Fates as I find many of it's mechanics frustrating or watered down versions of a similar mechanic from another game, I don't like how it tried to balance things, etc. Yeah I have a lot of beef with Fates, it's designs are better than most of Awakening's designs but it still has a lot of dumb class designs. I also see a lot of establishing rules and then breaking it's own rules such as for instance with the dragonstone Corrin can't double so ok you think stones give a big buff but you can't double, but then Keaton who uses a similar weapon type can double this is the kind of establishing rules and breaking them as is convenient.

I started with fire emblem fates back in middle school when pokemon was a blast playing in front of other people cause well pokemon was popular but anyway my friend had asked me before he gave me one of the fates games that 1: do you want to stay with your birth family or 2: stay with the family that kidnapped you? I quickly stated that I wanted number 2 and when i gotten fire emblem fates conquest i fell in love it. I've beaten the game and was so upset to see it all end until I realized the story isn't done yet because I still need birthright and revelations. But over all fates to me is a great game but I have to say it's the second best just because well I'm a major Robin fan lol. Awakening comes in first then fates haha

A random problem I had with the game was that Corrin's dragon form was completely pointless to the narrative and that it sucked in battle. Being a huge fan of dragons, seeing that it's peak usage was chapter 5 really let me down. And it's such a unique and awesome design too ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. And they had material to make it plot relevant with Revelations and the big bad and just: so many wasted opportunities.

Definitely a brief take on an incredibly complicated game, but you covered a lot of the important bases. Definitely could’ve used some more focus on Fate’s more unique mechanics, as well as addressing how Conquest’s map design is often considered some of the best I the series. I disagree with you on a few points, though; Corrin is bad for a few reasons, and while avatar-player disjoint is one of them, I wouldn’t consider it the most important one. Corrin is just a very poorly written character, and a very obvious attempt to stroke the player’s ego by having every character constantly refer to how good and special and amazing they are at everything. Honestly, I think Byleth suffers from that exact same issue, and it feels very off to have characters praise a walking plank of wood just because they’re a stand in for the player, and similarly feels wrong to have endless praise heaped upon the biggest idiot in the game just because they’re supposed to be us. Personally, I think it’s much more effective to have a defined but relatable character as a pseudo-player stand in, like Ike or Sigurd, but I do get the appeal of having an avatar. I also think it’s a bit too grand of a statement to say that all games need to offer complete freedom, part of what makes Fire Emblem a strategic experience is that it asks you to find creative solutions within a given set of limitations, but I do agree that I’m not the biggest fan of having gender specific classes be one of those limitations. It’s unfortunately rather integral to Three Houses’ design, since classes are also linked to specific skills, and restricting unit classes is meant to diversify units by giving them access to different skills and abilities, but it feels like a very artificial limitation to impose on the player. Like, there’s no realistic reason why men can’t be come Pegasus Knights, or women can’t become Brawlers, but it does at least serve to help make units feel different from one another in such a customizable game.

A lot of the points you make seem driven by your apparent dislike of this title. The characters are definitely not all able to be summarized by one sentence. In fact, this game has some of the most fleshed out characters. It's almost like you're judging the characters sans support conversations. Also Corrin isn't a blank slate and that's a GOOD thing. I do agree that the fan service is a bit high but it's clearly apparent in characters where it was meant to be apparent. Also Camilla isn't corrins actual sibling.. so... And if you're an idiot like me, who bought both CARTRIDGES at launch, without knowing you could get the second game for half off as DLC, then you cant benefit fully from the games since you dont have all stories in ONE cartridge to begin with. Not that there SHOULD be 2 cartridges to begin with since the game was marketed as "Make your choice" Yeah... I'm stuck with the choice I bought unless I buy the DLC, thanks.

I thought I was going to learn about how the story was written but instead I get a guy being a puritan crybaby over sexual content. Also cost isn't a real problem anymore when it comes to recommendation. Birthright is babymode easy on anything but Lunatic, and even then, you could argue that's not even "real" difficulty and is just grindy, revelation's map gimmicks are terribly designed and the opposite of fun, while conquest is a complete and extremely well designed game. I just tell people get conquest and nothing else and you'll expirance the game at it's absolute best.

Honestly conquest is the only one worth playing After playing all three routes (not fully but most of the way through) conquest is the only Fun one birthright sucks before difficulty spiking yo ass And revelations sucks dick on most of the "unique" maps and has units literally dropped In with ch 7 conquest bases Heirs of fate is fun and has the best final hoss in all of fe (at least what i've played) Haven't played hidden truths

1. The only thing Fates improved upon Awakening was the customizable Castle system and the removal of gender restricted classes as you said. However they made things more grindy than it needed to be. 2. "Most of the characters are underage" yeah like 2-4 of them max? Out of 20+? Bruh 3. Also the pair up system. Awakening pair up was not only random but strictly beneficial to only the player with no downsides besides having less units and was hard to plan around due to dual strike and guard being chance based. The offensive and defensive stance system greatly improved the strategy portion of the game and gave reasons to not always be paired up besides pair up bonuses being scaled back a lot. Also the skill learning system was made better and less grindy as well since you didn't get dropped back to level 1 in most cases and had to grind 4-14 levels to learn skills.
