My problem isn’t IGN giving Brothership a 5 out of 10. The problem is just how inconsistent their ratings are and many games that aren’t worthy of high ratings get those anyway. They rated Stickerstar at 8.3 an RPG that gives you almost no rewards non-mandatory battles. Then you have a game like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) where it has a good campaign with a fun graphically and mechanically rich gameplay as well as it’s multiplayer and somehow it is an 8.0? Same with SpongeBob: Battle for Bikini Rehydrated. A game that was a literal remake where the original had 7.3 the remake got 5.0, it was a remake the faithfully remasters the original, doesn’t fill out with bugs and glitches and the performance actually plays well. And it sucks how it’s being rated based on how you play it today and not how it was as a remake/remaster. Don’t get me started with Cyberpunk 2077, a game with one of the buggiest launches ever, my friend was so close to buying it by the bugs alone prevented it, playing it now is pretty decent. But it didn’t deserve a 9.0 back in the day. IGN needs to be more consistent because all I keep seeing is games being inferior rating higher than the other said game despite it having less effort

It feels particularly ignorant of how much variation the plugs and bros attacks give you for strategy. I never really found the basic attacks boring because theyre fun to preform and theyre pretty satisfying to see play out- Especially with the plug combos which I feel like should've been talked about more in this video? It seemed like a footnote in the combat section which feels very weird when that is a HUGE point of the combat. Its like reviewing TTYD and not dedicating a good chunk of time to the badges.

The more niche a franchise is, the more honest a reviewer can be about their opinions on the game. Nintendo fans have set expectations for Mario games, such as the belief that no Mario game should ever be rated below a 7. IGN is large and broad enough that they don’t need to appeal to this expectation, while a nintendo-focused review site such as NintendoLife is incentivized to give a score that they anticipate will be the consensus. You’ll find two main camps of Nintendo fans when talking about brothership. One group contains the fans that unequivocally love anything Nintendo, and outright deny reviews such as the 5/10. The other group will acknowledge the flaws of the game, but will say that the game still “deserves” a 7/10. This is that Mario barrier that I mentioned in play.
@LuxembourgishКүн бұрын
Brothership should be above a 7 not because it is a Nintendo game or a Mario game, but because of its own merits. Its story, visuals, and battles outweight the low points of pacing dragging it below a 7.
@22gunslinger2117 сағат бұрын
@@Luxembourgishthe visuals are what put the performance down. If they had found a way to do it without the outlines the switch cpu wouldn’t be working so hard and we’d get better frame rates across the whole game. The story is alright, but the lack of creative control from Acquire because it was two separate teams doin the story and gameplay meant that we got some bland characters. The only characters worth noticing are only worth noticing when you’re playing the part of the story focused on them. And only some side quests reveal more about the story. You get some important detail for some side characters which is nice, but you’ll never see half of those characters again. Some side quests have ridiculous goals to help an npc exclusive to the quest and you don’t learn much about them only to get a mushroom and syrup. This is where a lot of pacing comes into the issue.

I don't care if someone says they don't like the game. Tastes are different, and you can dislike a game if you want. Calling it the "Worst Switch game" or even "Worst Switch game of 2024" is a whole different story, though. I know he specifies within the video that he really thinks it's the "second" worst, but putting that label on it at all is ridiculous
@22gunslinger2110 сағат бұрын
@ he said it’s NINTENDO’s worst switch game of 2024. As in first party. The confusion is easy to understand because Nintendo Switch is one thing on its own. The reason it’s the worst first party title of 2024 from Nintendo is because the other releases are just that much better than it. It doesn’t make it the worst switch game to drop in 2024 as it’s still an alright game and there are many third party releases that are dog crap.

I didn't had an issue with the performance since I played this on my Switch Lite, which for some reason played better than the Docked version. The battle system was great, and dude, its a turn base combat, of course you are gonna do the same things over and over and over again, that's the idea of the turn base combat system, it gets repetitive but it gradually gets even better and deeper so you don't mind it being repetitive, because as it gets better, you want to keep playing and find out what else the game will provide.

Let me address your criticisms. Your review continues to spread ill-will towards this game, when the reality is that many complaints are blown out of proportion. The only reason this video has traction is because most of your viewers haven't played through all of the game and trust your opinions. You are using that trust to make mountains over some really small, cherry-picked mole hills. You complain about art styles, yet that is a very subjective matter. To most people, the game's style was translated on to the Nintendo Switch in a very tasteful manner. Most people would agree when looking at reactions to the initial reveal. Logan said he was excited. He never even had a problem with the style, but you make such a big fuss over this. I think balancing out series standards while doing something new with the art is a tough act especially for a new team, and in my opinion, I think the art adaptation to Switch was very successful. We don't know the full extent of the original cut content, and I am sure the team had some great artistic interpretations for the series, but the end result was still very praised. If we had a 2D HD art style, that would stifle potential for more creative camera angles in the environment and cinematic cutscenes. Both of which are leveraged in Brothership. Though you complain about the frame rate, and I noticed it too, it barely impacted my enjoyment of the game. Yeah, it was inconsistent, but it almost never made the game unplayable. In my opinion, a more justifiable criticism would be loading. That was more of a problem for me, but you never mentioned that. It just kinda shows how we have very different definitions of what makes a game unplayable. Link's Awakening and Echos of Wisdom are more egregious with frame rate drops, yet people enjoy those games just fine. You then go into characters, and yet, that's another subjective thing. One could see value in stories between Willma and her family, Technikki and Adaphane, Jr. and Buddy, IDLE and Peach, or Burnette and Chilliam to be investing moments in the game, whereas others couldn't care. I think it was cool that Mario and Luigi was trying to establish some world building and more complex characters, as I feel like prior games in the series have failed to do that. I personally think that the themes of connections and self-indulgence were very bold for a Mario game. Paper Mario is better at this, but for Mario and Luigi to attempt this direction is very promising for the series. Luigi Logic isn't supposed to be a puzzle moment for the player. These are just sequences in which Luigi is told to do something and/or gives the player some new abilities/actions. The novelty is that you never know what it will be next, keeping Luigi Logic refreshing throughout the whole game. Boss battles are especially interesting as they introduce mini games that help hinder the enemy in a way that doesn't immediately grant the player a win. The game evolves on this concept, where the player has to find the right moment in a battle to use Luigi Logic, like in the Bowser fight. Making Luigi an AI ally in the overworld isn't an OBJECTIVLEY bad idea. Everyone reacts to it in different ways. I am personally fond of how the game finds new ways for Mario to interact with Luigi. I was worried about how many times the series could do the A button, B button platforming without it getting stale. I mean, Paper Jam made it so that you would jump with all three characters at once. No one cared then, so why do people care now Luigi Logic intertwines with Luigi's AI with this, as Mario is able to interact with him in ways that wouldn't be possible in other games. There are puzzles in which you both are trying to guide objects but have to be working together from other ends of a map, as well at stealth section with Luigi in his barrel and times when Luigi is timing a hammer swing to a switch and is called to Mario seamlessly. To see this as only a bad thing is overly cynical. The reason there are elements in which you are sorta competing with Luigi to collect sprite bulbs and coins is to give off the feeling of a brotherly rivalry for both the bros, it ultimatley means nothing, but is a cute addition to compete against Luigi for. While platforming separately and jumping on separate numbered platforms are mostly timed platforming challenges for Mario contextualized by the Luigi AI sorta competing with you. Timed platforming challenges are nothing new for Mario and Luigi, and the only difference here is that Luigi is initiating them which mechanically means that the platforming can be more precise with just one bro. Now, I agree that the combat of TTYD is better, but that doesn't mean that the combat of this game is not good in its own right. Though Mario and Luigi have a smaller pool of enemies than TTYD, TTYD already had a baseline to take from in the original Paper Mario game. If you want to make an unfavorable comparison for TTYD, TTYD has you fight koopas, goombas, fuzzies, dry bones, clefs, puffs, and piranha plants, all of which were enemies from the first game as the primary enemies from chapter 1-the great boggly tree. Chapter 3 features most enemies from the original Paper Mario, and chapter 4 has buzzy beetles, hyper enemies, and boos, all of which were again from the original Paper Mario. Brothership, though having old enemies, has a lot of new types of interactions with these older enemies. Now, ignoring this. Let me go over some exclusive features that make Brothership's combat more balanced and interesting that TTYD's. Enemies in Brothership can team up with one another for new types of attacks, while enemies themselves often have multiple attacks. Mario and Luigi can be slower than enemies making is so that the player is not always guaranteed the first turn meaning that there are times in which the enemies have the upper hand and that your defense matters in a way that Paper Mario doesn't acknowledge. The battle plugs were an original idea that add complexity to battles and could be adjusted several times in battle, while badges were ripped from the original game and are hard to adapt to upcoming threats, as new players cannot predict the upcoming battles. You mention backtracking, but TTYD does this as well, but usually with worse rewards. I see the backtracking for side quests in both of these RPGs to represent the intrinsic value of immersing yourself in the game world more often than anything else. Though there are two things that I agree with you on that are a little problematic. 1.) The slow start of the game. It does take too long for things to get started, but I never had a problem with this because I just wanted to see what the game was getting at here by establishing Concordia. But yeah. This is definitely a problem as the first 3 Mario and Luigi games were so well-paced. 2.) The limited number of attacks. This was acknowledged with the plugs and gear combinations that add variation, but even then, I still yearn for more options. To me though, the game is more about reaction times, when to use bros moves, and when and where allocate gear and plugs. That's what makes the combat engaging enough for me. For me, besides reintroducing the hand attacks from Superstar Saga with fire and ice powers for the bros, I have a hard time thinking about other combat mechanics that can be added to the game. You, sir, are just offering deconstructive criticism, where you say the game is limited in attacking methods, but fail to provide any solutions to this. I 100%ed this game and really enjoyed it. Probably an 8/10 for me. Giving this game a 5/10 is implying that the game is only "half good" when this game has so much to offer and its clear to see the passion pouring into various facets of this game. Furthermore, Logan's rationale behind how a 5/10 is not bad and is mediocre doesn't sit well with me because it's one point away from what IGN would consider a "bad" game. IGN rarely gives games a 3, 2, or 1 rating. So, this game is essentially 1 point away from one of IGNs lowest review scores. Ballan Wonderworld is just one point away for comparison. Regardless of the criticisms, it is clear that this was a project made with passion. This is no Paper Jam or Mario Sports Superstars for 3DS, with bland direction. There is some genuine artistry here. This is the only Mario and Luigi game I went out of my way to 100% too (aside for Partners in Time because that's a difficult game to judge 100% completion in my opinion), so that has to say something about the game. I would say that I am as passionate about Mario and Luigi as Logan is, but he channeled his passion into nitpicking over small problems while choosing to not see the merit of some of the decisions of the game. I channel my passion to look at both what the good and bad do and am more forgiving to certain problems with the game as long as there is some merit to reason for those "problems". For example, TTYD is one of my most favorite games of all time, and though it's certainly not perfect, I would want to give the game a 10/10 because I can look past its shortcomings to see the artistic merit behind it. I digress. Though the pace of Brothership was too slow at the start, the game kept me hooked with unexpected turns of the game's story and gameplay additions. It's frustrating how you seem to be hyper nitpicking over a game that has many great elements to it. A bold story with more heavy themes than what I would expect out of a Mario and Luigi game, a unique and innovative battle system, cinematic cutscenes, moments of comedy, an art style that evolves from past games and a fun overall gameplay loop.

@dataroaming7512Күн бұрын
You're annoyed about games being compared within the same genre? If I could spend my time doing something, ofc I'm going to choose the better options, what is this argument. "playing it safe" since it's been so long somehow voids all criticism? Yeah sorry no, the series died because it played it too safe, this was the time they *had* to take a risk and they blew it.
@ChaosDS64Күн бұрын
@dataroaming7512 The first new game needs to play it safe and if it goes off the rails it will fail so in the next game it could be something new and also new a new Dev team is working on the game and him comparing Brothership to other RPG's made by a Dev knowing what to do it's like giving a gun to a baby and a assassin the baby needs to train to use it while the Assassin has many years of training under their belts at using guns. @ChaosDS64 Buddy Acquire is an established studio, the director may be new in the role but he’s been within the industry for a long time, these aren’t infants that don’t know what they’re doing. And games are inherently a creative art-form, compelling art requires a level of risk, games that play it too safe like this one ultimately fail, like it did.

@dataroaming7512 I have a Counterpoint this is a Mario game Mario games are always safe for the most part literally look at the new Super Mario Bros series and those things sold well they didn't tell the best but they did decent for what they were the only times when Nintendo didn't play it safe what is with Mario Wonder and a couple of other spin-off games like Paper Mario and also Nintendo has full control over what the game is and Nintendo usually does the right thing that's how the survive in the console Wars so long they're the reason why the PlayStation exists and Microsoft tried to buy them out and Nintendo laughed at them and also he was comparing Mario and Luigi a game series that's been dead for 10 years to a literal remake of a Final Fantasy game that was in the PS5 of course Mario & Luigi I'm going to be at that level the PS5 is 15 times stronger then a switch
@dataroaming7512Күн бұрын
@ChaosDS64 Thanks for bringing up new super Mario bros because it exactly proves my point, new super Mario bros sold 30 million copies, while its sequel sold almost a third of that at 13 million copies, the Wii U games sold even less than that for obvious reasons. It is the pinnacle example of a Nintendo series playing it far too safe, and you know what bought the series back? Wonder did over a decade since new super Mario bros U and they took a risk, shows you it can be done. And saying mainline Mario games don’t take creative risks? Look at Mario Galaxy, Odyssey, Sunshine, and 64. Games full of creativity and CAN compete with games from other consoles at the time because they were just that good. When wood was comparing it to final fantasy, it wasn’t about visuals, it was about gameplay and story, two categories where Nintendo is perfectly capable of competing. They just fumbled the bag here, plain and simple.

Some of the criticisms are legitimate. The game needs better pacing, and more special bros attacks. But outside of that the game shines. Definitely takes far too long to out its best foot forward. But its far from bland. One of the most intriguing stories in the series in its latter moments, and the presentation is incredibly endearing. But i understand that many people these days dont have the time to invest in something that takes so long to get going. These reviews, however, are being overly harsh. Given the care and passion given to its creation, a 5 is unkind to those who put work into the game. From a schooling perspective? Barely a passing grade?! I think the criticisms being made are valuable and worthwhile to see futher improvement, but the resultant outcomes arrived at need review.
@nicholasdiaz1925Күн бұрын
Sorry but being kind or unkind is not relevant whatsoever in reviewing a product imo. The point of a review is to give an analysis of the product itself and a subjective evaluation for others to utilize in their consideration of engaging with or purchasing said product. Context is helpful and it’s great to consider how hard the creators worked on it, but the review is an evaluation of the product itself, not the team behind it or their efforts. Sometimes a team or person can be very passionate and work hard, but their product just doesn’t work out for a multitude of reasons. That’s ok, but as a consumer my primary concern is about the product itself. On the other hand, insulting the reviewer and posting hateful messages online and freaking out because of his personal evaluation after actually playing the entire game: that’s unkind, and very uncool.
@dataroaming7512Күн бұрын

Fair opinion but why draw attention to reviewers with scores over 90 that have Nintendo in their names when theres 4 of them total vs 18 that are not Nintendo related. Seems like an argument made in bad faith tbh

"He is there the whole time so that's something" Except for the section that he's not because he gets sent ahead lol They didn't even do that for the full game.

I’m about 12 hours in, I wish the side characters were more interesting. I just don’t care for ANY of them. Right now I’m struggling to continue my play through. It’s pretty average at the moment.

I feel you. To me if a game doesn’t have me actively wanting to continue then it’s just a bad game.

The amount of areas, dialogue and just overall content in general was massive honestly but there WERE lots of times when I thought that it was just too much. I liked parts of the game but had to admit that 90% of the sidequest rewards were absolutely useless and the sidequests themselves were boring and uninspired. It felt like they were needlessly pumping in content for the sole purpose of stretching out the completion time. There were mainline story parts that made NO sense like when the kids volunteer to be blasted out of a cannon, into a wall, fully expecting certain death and Mario and company just go along with it like "Sure! That's cool! Let's needlessly sacrifice some little kids" followed by a scene that implied that the kids did in fact die. By the time I completed the game I was relieved that it was over and I could spend my time elsewhere.

Can you name a single Mario game, with cover art that doesn't look like it's a kids game? 🤣 It's MARIO.

Some criticism are fair, but too many people have been too harsh on this game, IMHO.

Tbh Pokemon Scarlet Violet is probably the worst game on switch compared to any other Switch game. It was boring, slower gameplay than sword shield which both use the classic Pokemon battle system. Had to delete it and wish Nintendo gave a refund option for it. Mario and Luigi Brothership is tbh a 8/10. It is slow but only at the start tbh and the artstyle is the best one we got for awhile for a Mario game.

I love Pokémon, I'm sorry for being toxic, but I seriously question the cognitive capabilities of adults who liked SV. Like, maybe if you're a complete casual and you think games running at 20 FPS, with a non-existent plot for the most part, terrible graphics, stupid gym quests, that this is all normal? But I see people who played masterpieces like Dragon Quest XI claim SV are wonderful lol How can you like something completely mediocre at best when you have literally seen one of the best games in this genre? Idk, maybe these people are on drugs while they play Pokémon.

@RuuyGКүн бұрын
@lutr0_679yes Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age. Really recommend it, but keep in mind that you will need patience, it's an extremely large RPG, the beginning is high quality but slow, lots of traveling and boss battles. But it is probably the best classic style RPG, and it is very classic, keep that in mind, don't expect anything super modern in the combat system or storytelling, it's just the best version of the very classic JRPG formula, with amazing modern graphics.

@@RuuyGSV Has serious issues for sure and is probably one of the worst on the console because of the issues with the fps and graphics and so on so forth, but I think it’s unfair to completely deny anything good that it has because of those issues. People lump in everything with the graphical issues and frame issues. The story was completely fine if not pretty good, shiny hunting is so much nicer for everyone, as it’s way more casual accesible. A lot of the new Pokémon designs were pretty good. The music was phenomenal. A lot of other ideas like the choice of gyms and such are there but just weren’t properly executed. I understand and agree with the criticism and frustration of the clearly unpolished-ness of the game, but it still has some decent qualities and was still overall fun, at least for me, especially since the worst I ever ran into was just the fps issues, never anything worse. I definitely wish they’d just get help from other studios to properly optimize and wish they had done that for SV though.

Me: "Tears of the Kingdom is currently my favorite game, but I think the story is bad, and--" Others: "You're a Nintendo fanboy! You'll defend anything Nintendo puts out." Also Me: "Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are a disgrace to gaming and should be removed from the eShop. Nintendo should be embarrassed that they even sort of promoted it. But at least the open world element is to be commend--" Others: "But you just hate Pokemon!" Also Also Me: "I couldn't stand Echoes of Wisdom, despite loving Tears of the Kingdom. I hated Super Mario Bros. 3, despite loving Super Mario Bros. Wonder. I didn't like Fire Emblem Engage, despite adoring Three Houses. I have standards even within Nintendo franchises I like." Sort of the vibe I detect you'll get from future comments, assuming you haven't gotten some already, and I just don't feel like scrolling through the hate. Overall, I agree with your assessment, and getting Logan's opinion in there helps IGN feel more human.

The 7's aren't really the problem with IGN. The problem is when they give something like Concord an 8 which was the biggest failure of video game has ever been that absolutely no one liked and then you give Stellar Blade a lower score that was universally loved. Steve's review scores are paid for by certain developers and it's very clear.
@G22865Күн бұрын
That's the point. The interview with the reviewer was very friendly but tge question should have been asked how can IGN give this game which is loved by so many yet give concord an 8, a game that was so bad it was killed off. No consistency in scores. And shows IGN can't be trusted.
@squeakyknee17 сағат бұрын
@@G22865 Because every review is done by a different person??? How is this so difficult to grasp? Logan didn't rate Concord. The IGN execs aren't the ones rating games. Also, you're both incorrect in your own statements. IGN gave Concord a 7, and the review was done by Travis. Do Nintendo fan boys think at all?
