I predict that when ever someone says "this year sucks" in the 2060s the now aged Millennials and Zoomers will say "this is nothing compared to 2020" in a similar way to how boomers say the current unrest is nothing compared to the 1960s.

Though JJ didn’t mention him, I’ve also heard this said about JFK. Fine enough president, though definitely didn’t measure up to his three predecessors, but he really gets mythologized and idolized for his youth and glamor, while we collectively overlook his mistakes like the Bay of Pigs. If he had gotten old and infirm, and if his many affairs and chronic health issues had come into clearer view during his life, we likely wouldn’t have such a romantic image of him

Wow what a great video! I think the thing you might have missed was 'Working from Home' , at least, I hope so. I think A LOT of people who used to drive into the office are gonna put their foot down on the idea of Always driving back in... Which I think is important, bc another aspect of all this is the Aversion to Public Transportation and thus increased car use that might ripple forwards, in an ecologically negative way.

I know JJ isn’t a very big sports fan, but sports fans like myself will definitely remember 2020 as one of the weirdest years in sports. With teams playing in eerily empty stadiums, and the NBA and NHL playing in a bubble.

I'm curious about how work-related travel will be coming back - as much as we all know that it's better for the environment, and a business' bottom line for someone from Toronto to zoom-into a meeting in Vancouver.. but how much is actually lost by not being in person. I can't quite imagine a world where we give that up - not matter how logical it would be.

Now that it's 2022, I'm finding myself seeing 2020 in my mind as a kind of monolith already. And I know you said you were reaching, but I think that, just as much as the pandemic, it's a subconscious effect because it's a shiny, pretty looking number. You're scaring me J.J.

This isn't really clever or funny, but I just wanted to say, there's so much to like about you and your videos. I enjoy your perspective and self awareness, and how uniquely fair you are in regards to the United States, in general... imperfect as we are. You're so intelligent and well spoken. And of course, your hair...I would be remiss not to mention your lovely locks, as so many have before me, and appreciate the variety of styles your videos have showcased. You did a good job summing up the year 2020, as so many of us will remember it. For some reason, listening to you talk actually has a much needed calming and centering effect. Don't go away!

Holy crap, this is fascinating video! It's really interesting to hear and see American(I know J.J is Canadian) perspective on 2020 as a Russian. I can say that a lot of things mentioned here were important and memorable in Russian internet culture as well(it's heavily westernized in my view, however it's not as prominent in the average Russian's mindset, as middle-aged and older people do not use the Internet as frequently as younger people do.

Also I think "2020" is extra compatible with cultural canonization because we haven't been able to globally identify a year or decade as a named identity for 20 years. Remember when there was "90s guys?" Other than "millenials" (which is not universally popular). Welcome to the 20s!

This might sound strange, but I think the niche sport of NASCAR became much more apart of the American cultural cannon of 2020. There was the horrifying Ryan Newman crash in the 2020 Daytona 500, the virtual iRacing series that took place at the start of the pandemic, NASCAR was the first "major" live sport to regularly return in May, there was the Bubba Wallace noose controversy at Talladega over the summer. All of these were considered major events in the American sports media, and a lot of them were related to 2020 events like sports shutting down because of Covid and the BLM movement. It was certainly a big year for NASCAR in terms of national attention, and I am very curious to see if the stock car racing series has staying power in the American cultural landscape moving forward.

Also the handshake!!(?) It’s hard to say from here in 2020 but things like the elbow touch or arms crossed over opposite shoulders (sd hug) have become so natural and customary(at least in the circles of an 18y/o in liberal parts of America). Shaking hands might have already felt weirdly formal, but it was also kitschy and traditional! Now idk miss Ronas not going anywhere for awhile, not all together and I’m realizing how often a handshake isn’t needed. I’m interested to know if we ever get it all the way back

Fantastic and enjoyable video as always. I think it's important as an anglosphere commentator to focus on the US' cultural zeitgeist as it has by far the most influence (Great Britain coming at a far distant second) upon the rest of the world (I am British BTW). This said the death of Diego Maradona will, for me at least, appear as something of a significant part of 2020 if only to prove that sport lays fairly firmly outside the American cultural axis. Your Kobe Bryant mention was a big part of this for me in that I feel throughout the world from South America, Europe, India and beyond it was taken so much more dramatically despite the fact Bryant was just out of his career and Maradona was a sixty year old man who (self inflicted and otherwise) suffered numerous 's death really health issues. Maybe the world around discusses Karens or Biden on occaision but Maradonna's death really reminded me more than anything the world is not the US

Zoom's freemium model allowed for free 40 minute calls. it just was being used in B2B sales prior to this. So as companies transitioned to work from home, the cost savings got it to be the app, and as the use increased, companies don't change stuff.

I think 2020 is the first year since 1999 and 2000 to have it's own unique relevance in society/culture. My wife and I talked about that last year. It reminded me of when "The Millennium", "Party like it's 1999", "Y2K"... were common phrases. And we are not really taught about Mae in school many places here in the US. If she is mentioned it is maybe a paragraph or a quick bullet point when the teachers talking about other women too.

2020 was the COMPOSITE year: began 1962 cuban missile crisis mood with US - Iran tension, became briefly 1974 with Trump impeachment, then 1919 (COVID) with some 1929 (stock market crash and massive unemployment), had a flaming 1968 summer (Floyd protests), and finally this november it became for a few days the 1983 "Return of the Jedi" final scene.
