Ruth’s four-bedroom home has been on the market for two and a half months…And they haven’t received a single offer. The home is in a great location, and priced low for a hot market, says Sofie…But its cluttered interiors, heavy window coverings, and hot pink accents are a major turn-off. The busy and battered kitchen is also a liability. The house doesn’t need much work, she says, just a few minor refurbishments to let its best features shine through.
In order to appeal to a broader market, Sofie devises a two-day, $3,500 plan to de-clutter the house, neutralize the color scheme, and freshen up the kitchen and bedrooms. Ruth says she’s getting desperate to sell…But can Sofie get her to buy into the concept of staging? While Anthony and the team work their magic on the interiors, Ruth get a crash course in real estate 101. Will their efforts pay off? Or will Ruth get stuck with a mortgage she can’t afford?

"If you dont get an offer in a couple months" Yikes! Wish I had known and wasnt so patient. It took us 9 months to sell our home. It was a great home but our real estate agent was going through a divorce and kind if checked out and moved to another country and didnt tell us. She kept pretending she was doing stuff and holding open houses but was lying. We had already moved out of state due to the military. Once we found out what happened, we switched agents and sold in under a month. 👍So make sure your agent is truly working for you as well

This series sure does expose so many mistakes homeowners make. At the root of all those mistakes and attitudes is this: The moment you decide to sell your house and you put it on the market, at that very instant, realize and accept that it is no longer your home; it's now over. You are living in a hotel or a house that you rent temporarily. It's not yours any more. It belongs to the public, so get out of the way. Make it work for the public or the market in your area. You are planning on moving so go ahead and start packing up; move stuff to a storage unit; get on with it. You don't have to go to the extent you see in this video, but use what you learn here to make your house work for the task at hand which is to SELL it.

There's a way of advising about design and clutter without insulting the owner. "All the windows are covering the light. It's so dark in here. What, are you a family of vampires or something?" "I'm going to go around and burn all the curtains and let the light in." I mean, really.

It was really hard to sell our old house in Britain and I think it just needed a little update as there was lots of dark furniture and we had wallpapered walls. My parents had spent lots of money renovating it and turning the attic into a second floor so they were disappointed when we sold it for less than we bought it for. Updating it would of been an easy fix but we had already moved to New Zealand so we couldn’t do anything. Also didn’t help my bedroom had blue walls with flowers and butterflies and I would not let it be painted over.

...Forgive me, but WHY would you even take on a mortgage you can only afford with the help of your child? That's a massive burden to put on them and keeps them chained to the house because they might not be able to afford their own place. I'm happy the daughter was able to find space for herself and her family and can still go and visit her parents. I love my family, but in an instance where five people were sharing a hotel room for three months, I about lost my mind, even cussed out my mom, something I'd never before done and absolutely sounds unfathomable today. But I hated living under each other like that so much, especially as an introvert that needs solitude (the bathroom was the only place of privacy and you of course couldn't be in there for long). Ten people in a house like that, you know everyone is sharing rooms. I couldn't handle it.

People can’t really see into houses very well in the daytime from outside, and I close mine at night. I lived in a house with a huge window pretty near the street, but I liked to look out and see the woods right across from me and let in light. I got composite blinds that looked like painted wood and could angle them to let in light, let me see out, but not let passerby’s see in. Another way to manage that is sheer curtains in the daytime with heavier curtains at night. Let the sunshine in and don’t close out the world unless where you live is actually ugly or dangerous !

It doesn't matter if you have "good" taste or not....until you try to sell.😉 Decorate however makes you happy, but don't expect it to make anyone else happy. There were obvious issues that they should have known were problematic though: the abundance of statues, the color of the walls (!), the color and condition of the carpet. Oh, and that damaged kitchen countertop! Just remedying those things would have made a big improvement. I never considered the option of painting tile. Good to know, in case I ever run into tile that I don't like and don't want to rip out.👍🏻

People can decorate how they enjoy. I put stuff in storage when I sold my last house and knew it had to be neutral 31 years ago. Interest rates for mortgages were in the double digits and homes in our area were sitting on the market for a year. Mine sold in 3 weeks for the asking price. The house we had bought had been on the market for over a year with multiple price drops. The real estate agent said it was because there was a 2 year old child, but the parents had divorced and there was a live in nanny. I had my 8 year old house that my 5 year old had been born and raised and it was in better shape than the one 2 year old house we bought which had carpet stains in every room, hardwood molding which had the varnish gone and several sinks leaking. We were handy and able to repair it ourselves after we gave it a thorough cleaning before we moved in. The buyers for our house told us that ours was left so clean that they didn’t bother, as I left it the way I would want to walk into.

This show was filmed in 2008-2009. Prices have gone way way up since then, so the gap between Toronto and Tennessee would be even larger, even taking the exchange rate into account. The asking price for this house ($429,000) won’t even get you a one bedroom condo, you’d get a tiny 300-400 sq foot studio at best. A house of this size in that area would go for a minimum of 1.1-1.2 million, even unrenovated. Real estate has gone bonkers in Toronto and most of Canada’s large cities.

Ugh, why oh why do people think baby poop green is pretty? An improvement? Not so much. I'd have rathered had the wood than that green puke color. Greys, puke greens, and "modern colors" not. Though it lightened it up for sure... it still didn't make the kitchen better.
@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley

I'm torn on the color (and I don't have a baby so I'm calling it olive green, lol). It was okay. I'd probably paint over it. I like it slightly more than the original cabinets, but maybe I'd stain the cabinets to make them darker or paint them black or grey. I like a sleek look.
@tonibauer2949
@tonibauer2949 3 жыл бұрын
That original wood was cheap and ugly looking. I like painted cabinets and they are often used in upscale houses now. Some of us love green in home decor, some hate it, but it was very in style when this was done.

In a decade or 2 the Everything-Is-Gray/Grey look is going to look so dated. Like the half-round windows they installed in every entryway above the front doors- so 80s/90s.
@tonibauer2949
@tonibauer2949 3 жыл бұрын
@@rkr5106 yeah. It never did fly at my house, any more than brown on brown with a little orange and avocado green did in the 1970’s. I realize homes need to be neutralized for selling and have done that twice, but I find both dreary, as I did the beige and white of the late 90’s and early 2000’s. But it was better than the horrid dusty rose and faded turquoise in 80’s decor. The. Worst.
@hisimagenme
@hisimagenme 3 жыл бұрын
@@rkr5106 Indeed!! But one thing has never changed until now... no one ever thought grey was an en-vogue color, vibrant color in every culture embrace in homes, on walls... this mono-chrome in our home is a pathetic attempt to entice people to believe that the best place to live is in cyber space - where colors abound and are neon and vibrant, where here in the real world all is drab and grey. Puh... we would not know what color is if not for the REAL world that no movie, game or computer could ever invent or replicate. At this point, I'd rather paint my walls baby poop green than be part of the "hip and trendy" mono chrome world all the "experts" are saying is the future. Colors were born in a real world created by God, where the people He created can GO OUT and walk in it, breathe its air, feast their eyes upon its beauty... not in some man made computer where one can have a virtual experience that's not the least bit real no matter what it feels like. Put color on your walls people... celebrate the world we've been given and tell the experts to get in line with reality.

Homeowners are always "We don't want to change the pink/purple/black/acid yellow walls! We like it this way!" When prospective buyers are looking for a house, crazy colors do not make them think "Let's throw away our furniture that clashes with this color & buy new furniture to fit the previous owner's taste!" When you put your house on the market, does your IQ automatically drop? I don't understand it.
@inspiredby624
@inspiredby624 3 жыл бұрын
I think the kind of people that have brightly painted walls simply find it hard to imagine that someone buying a house would just live with whatever neutral color the previous owner used instead of immediately repainting everything in their favorite colors. Like I personally don't understand why someone would choose not to buy a home based on something that's easily fixed with a fresh coat of paint. Painting the walls right before someone else is very likely to paint them again seems like a huge waste of time and paint to me but apparently it is a very profitable investment for the seller.
@JamieM470
@JamieM470 3 жыл бұрын
@@inspiredby624 I think that a lot of buyers scrape together every dime they have in order to buy a house, so they don't have money left over to buy paint & paint supplies right away....which means if their new house has paint colors they hate, they have to live with it until whenever they can afford to buy that stuff. It wouldn't be a deal breaker for me, but apparently it is for a lot of people.

The issue is that looking pass decor and clutter is hard to do. Imagine buying a used car with the owners taste: fuzzy dice, pepto bismal pink color, huge whitewall tires, a long scratch down the side compliments of an emotional girlfriend and full of the owners trash. I don't know about you but I wouldn't make a huge investment in something that I have to immediately update to "get it up to its potential." So anything that obstructs my view, I would just pass on.
