MSR has updated the heat exchanger page on their site to advise users to position the exchanger so it hangs a 1/2 inch Below the cook pot for maximum efficiency. Check it out.

I have viewed all of your videos about the GK stove series and MSR makes a below freezing fuel pump that I've never seen you use. It has a blue cap and is ONLY for use below freezing (32 degrees F or 0 degrees C for those who haven't put a man on the moon yet). It supposedly has extra heavy duty "O" rings. I wish MSR made a maintenance kit for it but I've never seen one.

I've never used the Arctic pump because then it's a second piece of kit I have to maintain. Plus, sometimes it'll get above freezing in a tent in the sunlight. Something I don't want to have to worry about. It was 35ºF-55ºF in my tent on Denali 2 weeks ago a few times.

I've carried stove "Repair" Kits specifically made for my Liquid or canister stoves, ALWAYS. Never had to use any of the parts in those "Repair" kits, however, I have seen other people's stove malfunction & then they are SOL for hot coffee or a hot meal. I bought one of the original MSR Liquid Stoves when they first became available & it still works like a champ. Paid $35.00 for it which was a huge improvement over the Sterno stove I had been using. Yes, I do know how to maintain it. That blue ring of fire & an MSR Stove is a piece of equipment Sir Edmund Hillary surely wishes he'd had with him.

I learned to in Norway to prime the stove with a tiny squeeze bottle of alcohol it primes it well and doesn't make as big as a flame. If you get stuck in your tent I use my big snow melting pot to hold over the flame when I prime it to prevent a chance of a flair up in the tent or vestibule. Have you checked out the Optimus Polaris Multi fuel stove? I bought one with its magnetic built in cleaner. I really love it.

I've heard good things about the Optimus. I'll have to try it.

Hi Aaron. Thanks for all the great content. I have a question about river crossing in arctic / winter conditions. I see thru hikers doing river crossings and many of them embrace getting wet, wearing their shoes while they cross. This is during the warmer parts of the year. It seems like this strategy would be lethal in arctic conditions, so I assume different techniques are required. I would love to know how you handle river crossings in winter or in arctic climates.

Not totally. If you add the trillium base, it helps, but the legs can still pop off.

When doing longer trips in cold weather what fuel do you run in the XGK, if it is White Gas do you ever spring for the MSR Superfuel or is a cheaper white gas like coleman just as useful?
@ALinsdau
@ALinsdau 2 жыл бұрын
White gas. Superfuel is, as far as I know, white gas. It's the "standard".

Any particular reason to not use a jetboil or similar compact stove for shorter duration trips? Any length worth going one option over the other?
@Cody-gr2kc
@Cody-gr2kc 2 жыл бұрын
Especially in extreme colds, the fuel in canister based stoves struggles to pressurize, while liquid fuel stoves like the one he shows are able to be pressurized using the pump in any condition, and as a result work well on extreme winter trips.

@@Cody-gr2kc thank you I bought a stove adapter to let the stove canister run while upside down but after hearing this I should have just put the funds to a liquid gas stove. Thanks again for the reply
