When I was 35 I am now 70. I played on the PGA course in Palm Beach Gardens the Monday after the PGA tournament, with three of my golfing regulars. At that time, I drove the ball as far as any professional golfer. Around 275 yards and out to 300 yards 20% of the time. You can’t understand today how far that was with a persimmon driver. None of us shot under 100. That year I played Doral the blue monster from the tips. This was an amateur tournament but not PGA tournament conditions. Thing is, a 15 handicap isn't "usually shooting mid 80s". You get your handicap from the best 8 of your last 20 rounds. I'd say a 15 handicap usually shoots high 80s - low 90s. At Augusta? I'm an 18 and if i shot less than 110 I would be delighted. Wouldn't be disappointed if i broke 120.

You’re being humble and yet still overestimating yourself at Augusta haha. I’m an 8, and I don’t know if I’d break 120. I played Kapalua last year. Not my best round, not awful - I shot 93. I think I’d average 90-92 there, as like I said, it was a little worse than my average day. That was from the Regular tees. From the Tour tees, that’s pushing me back to around 100. Then we have to add tour conditions…idk, I’ve never played a course in tour conditions. Do I shoot 105-110? Closer to 120? Maybe somewhere in the middle. That’s Kapalua’s Plantation Course, where they have the Sentry. A tournament that typically has some of the lowest scores of the PGA season. Augusta would be several shots harder. I’d be happy to break 120 and would be over the moon if I somehow broke 110, but I don’t think that’s remotely realistic.

I think the real total would be closer to 120. A 15-handicapper doesn't shoot mid-80s regularly, often they'd be into the 90's, sometimes more. Then there is the course being in tournament trim, a completely different beast, let alone the natural difficulty of a course like Augusta. To get close to 100, they'd need to par close to half the holes on one of the most difficult courses in the world.

I played with a caddy at Merion, East Lake, and Medina. The caddy doesn't know your game, and it takes a while for them to figure it out. Their biggest help is yardage and green reading. They have since reversed the 9's at East Lake. The 2nd was a par 3 playing about 160. When I asked him what I should hit, he said, "Hit your 160 club." 🤣 A caddy will save you shots on the green, but he can't save your game. Playing with a caddy is golf at its finest. If you ever play with a caddy, do them a favor and lighten your bag. Take out all the needless items. A caddy will normally carry 2 bags.

I've played a couple of tournament courses the day after tournaments, and I don't think many people can understand how much harder a course is in tournament trim. Tee boxes are further back and often off- centre. Rough where there isn't usually rough. The normal rough is worse than usual. But the biggest difference, the pace of the greens. So much harder, so much quicker! You need more control and more carry to end up where you'd usually be. Your usual approach shot is now longer and harder to control. Then trying to stop this longer approach on much more difficult greens, forget about it! The course becomes a different beast!

You think you're good until you play these courses. I shot in mid 80's and 90's. We're no match for those types of courses. At Merion, I'd miss the fairway, and from 4 to 5 inch thick, rough, it was a wedge back to the fairway. The green speeds and the harsh rough separate us from the big boys. Respect for pro golfers. I'm a 9 handicap. The only holes that I could reach in regulation would be the par 3's. Once on I would probably three putt at minimum and more likely 4 or 5 putt. So assuming 4 putt I'm 8 over on 4 holes. I'd be reaching the other 14 at 1 over regulation and 4 putt.....triple bogeys. So 3 over on 14 holes is 42 plus 8 over on the par threes for 50 over or 122 for the round. And that is assuming no bad shots. I shot 84 from the tips when I played there. I grew up helping my dad cut the grass with the other slaves in the 70s. Whoever cut the most even grass got to play one round with a guest. My old man picked me! RIP dad we got a black president and a female black vice president! You’d be so proud of how far America has come!

Let the 15 play the course twice. If I ever get to play Augusta I could care less what I shoot, but a second time I would be much more relaxed.

Not sure why the Media always poses easy questions. Of course a 15 isnt breaking 100. I am a 5.1 Handicap. This years Masters will play 7,555 yards, the most current course/slope rating I see is 76.2/148. On Trackman, I played Fields Ranch East Course in Texas, the course/slope rating is 77.2/150 at 7493 yards, and I shot an 86. Im curious why the Media always uses high handicaps for reference

I am a 7-8 handicap which means my average score is 81.6 on courses with slope between 116-131. I have only played one course called Tobacco Road in North Carolina that has a slope anywhere near Augusta and we never play greens that fast. Doubt on my best day I break 100 from their tee boxes. Maybe from member white tees would be the only chance

Best case - 18*6 = 108. Suppose you can drive 220 straight 90% of the time, and no Duffs.

Better question is what would the average 4 or 5 handicap golfer shoot from the Masters tees playing in Masters conditions? I say, would have a hard time breaking 100. It’s far more difficult course than it appears on TV. The elevations, deep bunkers and severe slopes and contours of the greens don’t show up on TV. You think you can hit a few greens in regulation?…congrats, nice 4 putt.

Shoot..i have a hard time breaking 100 on the local municipal course.
@simplysimple76285 ай бұрын
What the average golfer fails to understand is that aiming at pins on a really really difficult course isn’t where you should be aiming. Most of the smart shots would be 15-20 feet away from the pins.
@deepee15445 ай бұрын
And a 15 handicap doesn't even regularly hit close to the pins on their local muni.

I'm a 3.0 and average 250 yards off tee. Augusta in masters condition off the comp tees almost all par 4's would have to be played as par 5's. If I could average 6 on every hole that would be 108 and that would be a HELL of a good score for a 3 handicap. There isn't a chance on earth that a 15 handicap would break 100, I think 135 - 145 is actually realistic for a 15.
@Crankthatyouu4 ай бұрын
108 would not be a good score for a 3 handicap. I think you’re selling yourself short.
@mabbott134 ай бұрын
I'm a 3 handicap as well, and no way could I break 100 first time there in tournament conditions from the tips. Keep in mind that most of us play courses that are 5500-6700 yards, not 7500 yards. That's a huge difference. Plus, a 15 handicap probably plays the middle or up tees, not the tips. On the other hand, if you're 15 handicap from the tips, that's a different story. I hit it it around 260-270, and it's just too long these days. 10 years ago, I'd say maybe I'd shoot in high 80s, b/c i could hit it 300+, but now I would doubt I could break 100. I agree that a 15 hcp shoots 125+ minimum
@johnnybgood74425 ай бұрын
They wouldn’t get close to 100. My buddy Casey Won the 2006 Publinx over Anthony Kim and got an invite to the Masters. He was probably a +4 or so at the time and shot 87 the first day. A fifteen handicap would get destroyed.

Thank you! It was driving me mad. A 15 handicap gets that 15 from his best 8 out of 20 last rounds. So he is hitting high 80s... during his best rounds!!!! On average they are probably hitting mid 90s. Then add the distance, the pressure, the contours, the speed of the greens,... I would take the over on 120 without hesitation.

If you haven’t seen the greens in person, you cannot imagine them. TV doesn’t do them justice. I have been to Pinehurst #2, Kiawa island ocean course, and Harbour Town. None of those greens compare in severity of undulation of the Masters.

They ( the Pros) never insult their bread and butter. But looking at reality. 15 hcp is not good on any golf course. Losing 20 shots just getting out of bed add slopes, downhill lies 500 yd par 4’s, water around many holes I wold say 140 being kind

15 handicap shoots more like 90+ on the regular. I’m a 8 handicap that doesn’t even practice or play more than twice a month and I’ll be happy with a 90 at Augusta. A 15 handicap is shooting 120+

I think they’re being generous. 120 would be more realistic. Driver, 3 wood wedge to most of the par 4s.

100 is a generous threshold. Easily more like 120. 3 putts per green would be probably the norm, and they surely wouldn't hit every green in regulation.

Way too generous of those guys… a 15 handicap is the type of golfer that can struggle to break 100 on any given day.. but there may be days they have a good round to balance their handicap out and get to 15.. they would have a very hard time breaking 120 at Augusta, most likely would just stop keeping score after hole five and “just enjoy the day and the scenery” 😂

Years ago, Ray Romano played Augusta from the Masters tees, hoping to break 100. He didn’t, and 6 putted a green. Bogey golfers tend not to be good putters, and August would be brutal if you don’t putt well.

Someone cant do maths, a 15 handicapper on a very good day hits mid 80's. He hits around 90's on an average course, for sure hes dropping 1-2 shots extra ever hole at Augusta, 115-120 or more, depends how many 3 abd 4 putts he takes.

Built on an old nursery when the property was about half the size. My family home is roughly 6-8 minutes away. Some of the shrubs, camelias, juniper, holly & azaleas from that nursery are still growing in many of the original brick homes in our neighborhood. We've had 4 badges in our family since the 1970's. Get offered 25-30 grand+ for them every Feb/March like clockwork by brokers.
