You had me agreeing until the part about gun ownership; rather than being a bad thing that would exacerbate the conflict, the high levels of gun ownership are a good thing: people are more equipped and prepared to defend themselves and their loved ones, and since both sides have equal access to force and weapons, neither side is incentivized to attack an apparently defenceless enemy, but rather is deterred from doing so. That being said, I think Morris and Simon are right that the model for a second US civil war is La Violencia in Columbia. It is the closest model we have to the current state of polarization and mistrust.

I was raised in one of the more peaceful parts of Northern Ireland during the troubles. When you are exposed to news of bombings and shootings daily, it doesn't stop you going somewhere like Belfast or Derry/Londonderry, or on a night out it makes you more vigilant. Bombs could be anywhere so you remained vigilant when out and about. You'll swerve the car to avoid a paper/plastic bag in the road, it could hold a device there to ambush security forces. I remember opening my bag to be security checked before entering shops, that becomes normal. We checked behind/under stock in shops for hidden devices before closing time. There were also things like 'bomb sales' where the shops sold everything for dirt cheap after a bomb went off. Sometimes the glass/smoke smell came out of the clothes/items, and sometimes they didn't.

With more than 472 million Americans owning firearms; most of them on the conservative Republican side, I don’t think there’s any question as to the result of a second American civil war. Wisconsin alone issued almost 3 million deer hunting permits in 2023. That’s 3 million snipers. The second amendment to the constitution is the only thing standing between regular Americans and power hungry politicians and corporations.

Additionally, a majority of the production and transport side of things, as well as the majority of gun owners, is conservative. It won't be so much a war, as a curb-stomping. Hopefully, with a better system in place afterward. Rancher and farmers refusing to provide the liberals with food, truckers, rail, and other shippers refusing to deliver stuff. Gas and oil pipelines shut off, power grids shut off, possibly even water sources restricted. Construction and maintenance work abandoned. "You're cut off", backed by overwhelming firepower.

Mike, there is only approximately 335 million Americans. Say 1/3rd of those don't own guns. So, we are looking at around 225 million gun owners with an average of 2 to 3 weapons apiece. There is only maybe 1.5 to 2million Regular army and guard with combat skills combined, navy and air force no. So, 3million snipers alone in Wisconsin plus those from all the other states including still about 3 million able bodied veterans of which most are conservative. It will be up to the navy and air force to keep countries looking for opportunities at bay.

Of course there's a question......the Police State backs up the left. Contrary to popular Conservative belief, the police refuse to arrest domestic terrorists like Antifa and BLM, and actively pursue conservative patriots like January 6th people or religious groups or people with Gadsen Flags (the FBI lists this as subversive). In addition to the police, the Deep State Shadow Government is also definitely on the side of the Marxists. The entire legal system falls strongly on the left and in utter violation of Constitutional Principles. So the legal system constantly operates in opposition to The Law. This is why things are so broken. The good news is that the U.S. military and all local Sheriffs' Departments have sworn a duty to The Constitution.......so if they stand by that duty, they will be on the side of America and against the socialists. Nothing can physically beat the U.S. military. It's a big battle because leftists are really great at propaganda and subversion. The Nazis and the CIA and the Soviets and North Koreans excel at Marxist tactics that allow them to destroy a country from within.

@@vladyvhv9579The left has the CIA, the FBI, the ATF, the IRS, all other Deep State and regular government agencies, and all of the local police throughout this country. They will be funded by Soros, the Chinese Communist Party, and massive government resources. We conservatives will inevitably be backed up by the military and possibly the Sheriffs' Departments across the land. Many Sheriffs' Departments prefer to operate like police forces and may stand with the Police State in its attacks upon The Constitution. It would probably be a Hell of a battle, not to be taken lightly. No one should assume any foregone conclusion. There are SO MANY fools who actively work to give away their own rights while attacking the Constitutional Rights of others. Stupid liberals are always talking about undermining the First and Second Amendments. Also, they want to destroy Western Society. Stupid Republicans are always talking about empowering the Police State which is on the other side, and undermining Due Process principles to lock up people without their 8th Amendment guarantee of bail who just keep committing crimes when they are let out. We have principles for a reason. Our country is collapsing because no one cares about The Constitution anymore. The evil overlords can easily get political hacks who don't have any values to denounce critically important Constitutional Principles. Things are bad.

As an American, I just want to apologize on behalf of my government constantly intervening in Syria and the middle East in general. I have absolutely no control over my government, they forcefully take my hard earned money (I am self employed and work 12 hour days 6 days), and call it taxation. But the taxation doesn't go to help the every day American, it goes to the war machine. It makes me disgusted that my money has been used against my will to commit atrocious actions and/or "stir the pot" in the way that feeds the military machine... English is my second language, I'm not from here originally. So my perspective is complex and nuanced. Ultimately, I believe the USA Government are the main problem in the world currently. I think things will be better, for the world as well as for Americans, once a revolution happen. I am hopeful to see our constitution and principles reinstated. Maybe it's bias, but I know many non westerns and Europeans would prefer if there must be a global super power... Russia is preferable to the United States. This is not to say Russia is eutopia, not even closer to one. Russia has a much better track record of trying to use treaties and sticking to them unless there other party breaks it, Russia does not intervene to the extent USA does, and Russia does not have white supremacy complex such as USA. This is getting rambling but I pray to God/Allah that there will be one day global peace. I wish we will all stop fighting, and instead sit down to discuss every day things ...it will lead humanity to realize we have much more in common than not

The problem of a modern civil war is that it wouldn't be regional as much, it'd be neighborhood by neighborhood. Similar to a Balkans situation. EDIT: Everyone reading this needs to work on their reading comprehension. I said *similar* to, not exactly like. The main emphasis of this comment is that it would not have clear cut battle lines like the American civil war of the past, instead lines would vary within one state or even change neighborhood by neighborhood. It's like with state armed forces. A lot if not the majority of people are not frontline trigger men. Someone needs to cook for that IS fighter, someone needs to collect the revolutionary tax, someone has to collect and move kit. When you have military control of an area you can start to tax it. Local business, routes, some raw material or what have you. Groups without territoral control like the IRA could still run effectively protection rackets.

I can thoroughly agree that our populace is ridiculously divided, and surely our politics have become identity-based, but I don't think it will rise to this level. I also don't think that us being armed would mean such a conflict could be worse - it means anyone thinking of carrying out atrocities on the public has the very real concern that the public can and will fight back. The description of what it would look like is already in American history. Bleeding Kansas. Or even leading up to the American revolution. I was recently doing Family tree research and found that one of my ancestors was one of the only loyalists to keep a journal that survived. He first started as a patriot and took part in tarring and feathering, burning down homes, driving loyalists from their towns. He loved a girl from a loyalist family but was forbidden by the family from seeing her so they had to sneak around. He later became a loyalist and was reported to have saved a captured patriot from being tortured, scalped, and killed by pulling his gun on one of his fellow loyalists. He also talks about being disowned by his family and never seeing his brothers again because they were patriots. His father and brothers were patriots while his uncle was a loyalist that was imprisoned by patriots. After the war him and his wife (the loyalist girl he had to Romeo and Juliet with) were forced to flee to canada. Barely managing to escape when (even after the patriots had won) decided to raid and burn down his house. P.S. a couple days late but I feel the Hatfield- McCoy feud is another example in American history that shows what another civil war would look like

The American Revolutionary War was the first civil war in the United States. Forty percent of the people in the US were for independence from Great Britain, forty percent of people were neither for independence from Great Britain nor being against independence, fifteen to twenty percent of the people wished for the United States to remain part of Great Britain. The slaveowners such as George Washington, Thomad Jefferson, James Madison established optimal conditions for the US democratic system to fail and civil war to erupt. They wished to maintain the greediness, brutality, violence, and maliciousness of slavery. President Andrew Jackson deliberately started the war with Mexico to spread the greediness and brutality of slavery and concentration camps. The Mexican War was the second civil war in the US. The Civil War was the third civil war in the US.

Excellent summary. Another famous example of ideological conflict is the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). The social fragmentation and resentments developed over many years, exacerbated by economic depression and imperial collapse. The 1936 election was the last straw, triggering tit-for-tat assassinations and the attempted coup d'etat that divided the military against itself and drew in outside forces (Germany, Italy, USSR, & the "International Brigades"). Mountains of books have been written on it. As one of the worst-case scenarios, it deserves closer attention. In our case, we cannot rule out the possibility of allies and rival powers becoming involved.

@Warographics views are skewed - truck drivers are conservative in the USA and so are farmers , nearly all guns are owned by republicans/ nationalists nearly all veterans are republicans , nearly all active personell soldiers are republicans most city folk are liberals, if tentions really come to arise then a violent mass of abaut 10% of the most armed and violent nationalists with the support of most republicans can block and encircle urban areas and starve them out by withholding food deliveries , destroying power infrastructure also takes out water , they could even start firestorms like during WW2 firebombing campaigns by deliberate and coordinated arson and supression or persuation of fire fighters to not interfere, then its just a waiting game , they can avoild urban fighting , have most guns and nearly all food, in my educated non american outsider perspective it appears that if this insurgance is coordinated and strongly enough motivated to "solve the discord" , perhaps by obvious left wing power grab and unconstitutional law making it would more likely look like the sieges and depopulation of cities by the Khmer Rouge or a flare up of violence like the Rwandan genocide - only right wing and with much more weapons and ammo as well as Military and Paramilitary training and tactics and 1st world logistics the biggest mistake the Liberals and left make as well is viewing the Police and Military as a impartial institution rather than a mass of individuals with personal believes and a organisation that can sway politially , be it organized or disorganzed thank god americans are to lazy to kill eachother , that would most likely destabilize the better part of the world leading to meny more wars flareing up while the USA is to busy being at odds with itself. Being a minority and existing in the USA might also not be all that healthy if , god forbid, that ever happens - not out of racism but political predjudice

For instance, most conservatives absolutely believe that being conservative is something that is allowed to be openly disparaged, mocked, and a cause of discrimination. There is absolutely massive levels of people who are disenfranchised because of their race, though they are the ones that are blamed for all the ills. There are a great many attempts to speak, but conservatives are *not* allowed to speak openly without there being a reprisal. As I once said to someone who trashed our friendship because of opposing ideologies. "There are two ways for us to become enemies. One is for me to make you my enemy, and the other is for you to make me your enemy." That individual would absolutely be my enemy today. Not because I want that, but because they can see no other alternative. I must agree with them, or I am evil by their reckoning.

However, I think one reason a civil war is unlikely in the U.S. is the distractibility of the people. When things start to get bad at home the government gets us more publicly involved in an overseas conflict. But support for foreign allies is becoming a devicive topic as well.

One part that spooked me during the Balkan wars was the number of militias. These militias would act alongside the national army or in support of it but also effectively run the areas they were in charge of. Towards the end of the wars, the started to fall out more with the central governments who wanted to either disband or fold them into the armed forces. But in practice it meant that the roadblock you need to pass to work is controlled by random auxiliary goons with absolutely no effective supervision. I think Amazon could afford a pretty hefty militia. Even if all it does is to ensure the security of Amazon warehouses, convoys, Jeff Bezos and occasionally beats up unionists.
