I have read/heard at some point, that for most people, hitting that freezing water would send your body into (literally) shock where you couldn't move. This includes not being able to inhale/exhale, so lots of people suffocated. There's a name for that cause of death, something like crush asphyxiation, because it's the same thing as being crushed in a crowd.

I have travelled on a cruise ship (Sovereing of the seas, already scrapped sadly. Had the same size of the Titanic, around 269 meters) and I can second this. Can't imagine being in that situation. Charles Lightoller had a lot of deaths on his conscience. He had plenty of room on the lifeboats he launched to allow men into them, and refused, to the point of threatening to shoot any male who dared to try and get in. He had a twisted sense of "duty" where he felt that men should die rather than take a place in a lifeboat. That twisted attitude killed many more men than needed to die that night.

It wasn't possible to launch full lifeboats, as either the davits, or the structure of the boat, couldn't stand the strain. The usual procedure was to launch the boats half full, stand off, then pick up swimmers from the water.

Yes, so many women were left as widows or children left fatherless and Lightoller wouldn't allow men on. I'm surprised he didn't get more flak for sending so many lifeboats out with empty seats when there were people nearby who could have been saved.

I don't think Lightoller had those deaths on his conscience. Chivalry was a real and strong concept in the Victorian Era. It was generally accepted practice to try to save the women / children, and men to accept their fate / face death as a "MAN". Note: certain 1st class passengers (men) put on their best suits when it became obvious the ship was sinking, so as to "face death as a gentleman". Many of the men denied a spot on a lifeboat by Lightoller, simply stepped back into the crowd to accept their fate. My reaction would have been, hey, there's lifeboats all up and down both sides of this ship, this clown can't be in charge of loading ALL of them, let me walk over to the other side and see what this guy (Murdoch) has to say. Of course I'm thinking with my 21st century mentality, had I lived in the Victorian Era, that thought might not have entered my mind. It is kind of "messed up" though, Murdoch was more "man-friendly" so to speak, and he died that night, and Lightoller was a complete "hard-axx" and he survived, although, to be fair, he WAS prepared and intending to go down with the ship that night, it was only by a twist of fate (and a blast of hot air) that he even did survive.

Information is key, you’re right. But what you didn’t mention is getting information from the first minute you’re onboard. Explore the ship. Learn your way around. Listen to the crew when they’re doing lifeboat drills. Don’t wait to gather information until you are in a life and death situation. Rose was smart to ask Andrews so many questions early. She was smart to get a quick impression at the time of the incident how serious the problem was. Information is life.

If I'm a time traveler: Go to the starboard side (because it would be suicidal to go to the port side) and try getting into the first available life boat. Since they were pretty empty anyway and the officers struggled getting people in them, one person more wouldn't be a problem considering Murdoch would be in command and men had at least some opportunities to enter a life boat. If not, I would go up to the boat deck as ordered and probably try getting into a life boat. I don't know if I would end up on the starboard or port side, but even if I ended up on the port side, I would have probably tried looking how it is on the starboard side after being turned away. Otherwise, I would probably continue trying until it is too late and no idea what I would try if I didn't got into one. Good thing that if I'll ever be on the Titanic, I know what will happen and what I need to do

If all else failed, I would go to the collapsible boat on the starboard side that they pushed off from the top of the officers quarters onto the boat deck, because the collapsible boat on the port side fell upside-down in the water and I think the "women and children only" protocol was no longer in effect at that time. I know that boat nearly sank though from being tied to the falls and the ship started dragging it under, plus the falling funnel flooded the ship and knocked a bunch of people out of the boat and a few later died due to the freezing water in the boat. But if all else failed, I may as well try that. Jeez didn't expect to get so many people replying to me... yes I know that the people on collapsible b had an easier time but even if I wasn't a time traveler, I would have ran the whole boat deck and I would have eventually seen the 2 lifeboats on top of the Quarters, I would have just hung around one and waited for them to push it down. The problem with both the collapsible's is that the one on the port side was easier to fall off of but had a higher survival rate, whereas the one on the starboard side was fairly easier to stay on but the flooded boat caused a higher death rate.

The deck chairs floated. I would get at least 4 deck chairs, and start tying them together in a square formation with either rope (if I had a knife) or maybe torn sheets or shoe lace. Then I’d try to find anything that could float and be attached to these wooden deck chairs (pillows, cushions, other wooden objects, maybe even my own mattress if I could get it upstairs/through the slanted hallways, this would be great at keeping the water from touching you for a longer period). This sounds like it would take a while but once the plan is realized this “chair raft” would most likely only take about 20 minutes to construct. The hardest part though would be trying to actually “launch” this raft into the water with the panicked people around and increased angled of sinking.
@LordMangudai
@LordMangudai 2 жыл бұрын
There was a door on D Deck that they opened to load passengers onto boats with (but never used). I would find that, wait until it sank to the waterline and then launch my raft there. That would give me enough time to paddle away from the Titanic before the final plunge and thus not be in danger of being sucked down or swamped by the people in the water. Then I would try to reach one of the other lifeboats. Presumably they wouldn't object to me tying myself to the boat (or even just holding on) since I wouldn't be taking up extra space.

As a time traveler: I like the guy that got drunk and walked along the side of titanic as it sank. I think the key here is not to be "afloat" but rather to simply stay dry. Water on skin conducts well and would take heat away from your body far too fast. I would get some rain jackets and rain pants and tie them fully around my legs, waist, arms etc, and seal it off with grease, this can surely be found on an old ship. Then steal some alcoholic beverage and a bunch of hot water, eat some food, get drunk, drink the hot water and then wait until the very last second to jump in. This should give you a head start with body temperature, allow for a longer time in the water, and reduce the human body's natural reaction to extremely cold water.

Hopefully you can then stay out of the water mostly. Then paddle away from the ship. Biggest hazard would be others trying to climb on and wrecking it.

I was a mechanical engineer for 31 years. I would go to the Titanics machine shop and make some flair bolts. I would take them to a leaking compartment and put them in some of the empty rivet holes. Tighten the through bolt to spread the flair end, then tighten the large nut to pull the plates together. I would do this in two compartments so the pumps could catch up and stop the ship from sinking. Another idea would be to cut the cork blocks in the life vests into wedges and tap them into the gaps between the plates to stop the water from coming in. Another idea would be to take a canvas boat cover and tie weights on the two bottom corners. Then tie ropes on the other two top corners. Have two people lower the ropes so the canvas is over the leaking plates. Pull the ropes close to the boat so the water pulls the canvas against the leaking areas. This would greatly reduce the amount of water entering the ship. This amount of water could be handled by the pumps.

Except...Have you ever been in an unfamiliar shop and tried to find stuff? It's like high school shop class...takes forever to get anything done. You'd have to have that whole crew helping you. It would also help to close all the many portholes unwitting passengers left open. I kind of can't believe the crew wasn't a little more well-versed in slowing/plugging leaks in general. As for your canvas idea, they did something like that in Horacio Hornblower, so it must have been somewhere in the lexicon of past sailing. Anyways, maybe you'd enjoy this, more technical take, as I have. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rovaq6Sjh691aqs

I don't know if you noticed but in part of the movie during the sinking when Jack and Rose break through the door, the part where that employee was nagging them for it being White Star Line property, that they were then walking down Scotland Road. The other thing to look at is what type of society you are from. There was one passenger, male from Japan, who was on the Titanic as a second class passenger. He was traveling alone and stuck with Officer Murdoch until he allowed men to eventually get onto one of the boats. Even though it was clear that Murdoch allowed him onto the boat. People in Japan who eventually learned of his story berated / shunned him for taking a woman and child's spot on the boat until he eventually committed suicide. Because it was considered dishonorable in Japanese society. So the other factor is what society you are from as well. In certain societies it is completely unacceptable for a man to take a place in the boat if there are still women and children on the ship. Another factor is if you are a third class passenger who doesn't speak any English at all. Back then ship employees weren't required to learn another language as they are today. So for an employee to speak two or more languages was very rare. So with the language barrier you wouldn't be able to gather the information you need to evaluate the situation and make decisions or ask for directions on where to go. Unless you had the idea of following another group of people or to explore yourself until you found the way to the boat deck you are a sitting duck because of the language barrier. You see this kind of situation involving steerage passengers who sound like they are from India; somewhere from Asia or the Middle East. You see the guy with a book with his wife and children huddled close to him as he tried to translate the sign they are standing in front of just before Jack, Rose, Tom, and Fabrizio get to the stairwell where they use that bench to break through the gate.

I've thought about this for a long time now. If I was a time traveller and knew what was going to happen I'd be collecting bouyant things for the two days before and tying them together and hide it somewhere on a deck under tarps or something. Then when all the shit started, I'd throw it off the side and, having been drinking all night and be warm enough internally (like the cook), I'd get into the water and get on my makeshift raft. I thought of this when I heard about the Chinese man who survived on a table.

If you're a time traveler who arrives right as Titanic hits the berg, or shortly after in the "information gathering" hour, what about these two approaches: A) Convince Smith to fill one boat ASAP with the strongest backs he can find in the crew and have them row like hell for the "mystery ship," firing rockets along the way. The other ship *might* be able to get steam up enough fast to make it over before Titanic starts the final plunge and aid in evacuation; and/or B) Convince Smith (and Andrews) to counterflood the rear compartments (again ASAP). Titanic's resulting waterline will be frighteningly low as a result, and the ship will still eventually sink, but it buys you a few hours for the Carpathia to make it and get nearly everyone off alive.
@lovetobe6118
@lovetobe6118 11 ай бұрын
Those are interesting ideas and I have no idea if they would work. Because the lifeboat honestly wouldn't make it to the mystery ship in time to get it to turn around to navigate the ice field. I could be totally wrong on that. I have no idea if flooding the other compartments is available option and would love to hear from an actual engineer of it could work because a lot of theories similar to that have been debunked. I honestly think the best way to evacuate the Titanic would have been for Captain Smith to be more clear and concise with evacuation. He should have met with the crew and clearly told them their job was to get as many passengers to the lifeboat loading deck where then men would be led to a dining room to prepare tables and doors as rafts, and have women children and their fathers start loading in the lifeboats.

I'd probably sleep in a lifeboat because I'm scared of water (of drowning, to be exact) so the anxiety wouldn't let me really sleep in a cabin. But jokes aside, if I knew we hit the iceberg, as a male passanger not allowed to get into a lifeboat, I'd try to find another way to save myself and protect myself from cold water. I'd make sure my family (if I had one) was safe in the lifeboat, then I would either find a door to rip off the hinges (perhaps tell others to do the same) or get tables and use them as a raft. I'd likely do the same if I was a time-traveler. I'd even already choose the table or specific door to rip off to make the evacuation faster. btw, new subscriber here! To Build Titanic Raft: 1. Find deck-chairs. At least two. 2. Tie firmly together at all points. Arms, legs, backs. Either side by side or back to back or foot-to-foot (probably side-to-side because more tie-points). Lots of rope around to do that with. It's a ship, after all. 3. Strap as many life-jackets as possible to underside of deck-chair boat, under/between legs, and back and along the sides, using lifejacket tie-strings. Loads of leftover lifejackets around. 4. Instruct others on how to do same. Climb aboard, launch or float off into the ocean. Wait for rescue. Pull aboard extra survivors if possible (my guess is a construct like this would probably safely hold 2-3 guys, maybe 4, if lucky). Done.

One of the things i think is often overlooked regarding that disaster is how scary it would have been given that it's in the middle of the night, in the middle of the ocean, and cold as heck! I'm sure many, many people were too afraid to go the lifeboat route given the darkness, weather, and the 70 foot distance from the boat deck down to the subfreezing ocean.

I wouldn't even try for the life boats. There's too few of them, and they became quite in demand. Instead, I'd look for a large steamer trunk. I would empty it and drag it up to the well-deck (preferable the bow one) and climb inside. I' grab a broom, if I could find one, on my way. And I'd grab a large drinking glass too.I would stand beside the trunk until I saw the water approaching, then I'd climb inside. The broom would be used as a crude paddle. The drinking glass would be used as a bailing bucket.

Sam, you mention how well James Cameron depicts the disaster in his film. After recently rewatching the film in over ten years, I realized that two hours of the film's approx. three hour run time is dedicated to the Titanic sinking. Thus, the film's running timeline of the Titanic sinking is fairly equivalent to the historical timespan of the sinking. That being said/observed, would it be possible to analyze the film's depiction of the sinking with the comparable timeline of the historical sinking? In particular, noting the general behavior/panic levels of passengers and crew, as well as the depth of the Titanic into the water in relation to the amount of time that had passed (film vs. historic.) One other thing I'd like to mention/point out: How Caledon Hockley (Billy Zane) survived the sinking; he found an abandoned/lone young girl and falsified being "All that she had left in the world," in order to gain sympathy and a place on a lifeboat.

I’ve thought about takin a table or a door and tying lifebelts to them, just like your idea, and I’ve thought about maybe running to the bow, where you wouldn’t have to jump to get into the water, but the suction would probably be too much. I think I’d build my little raft, and wait for a opportune and relatively safe moment to deploy it. Or I’d wait til lifeboats hit the water and jump from lower decks that are open to the air/sea and swim mindlessly in a direction of one as fast as I could. Try to layer up. Frank Prentice said he fastened a lifebelt between his legs and tied it to his wais, give you that extra protection and I’d assume buoyant speed to swim rather easily. Whatever I’d do, I would not wait, I’d try to get onto the water and near a lifeboat as soon as I could, before much panic and before people get desperate. But let’s say I was forced to stay on the ship somehow, Id find some kind largish floatation anything and wait til the sink completely submerges and do my best to get as far away from people and get up on my raft and go towards lifeboats if I could see them. I agree with you that the best chance at survival is remaining calm and absorb as much info as you can and build a plan as you learn what’s happening and execute it with conviction and confidence trying your best to not succumb to thoughts about dying

I have always been amazed that people were reluctant to get into the lifeboats at first. i.e.- "We're much safer aboard this big, heated, well-lit SHIP, than we are in that little creaky rowboat in the ice-cold, darkness of the North Atlantic Ocean!" Of course, my perspective is from the 21st century, and that was the Victorian Era, BUT . . . to my way of thought, the Captain / crew know much more about the ship than I do, and if the Captain is ordering women / children to be put off in the lifeboats, well he has DANG good reason to do so! Those 1st class women were married to some of the richest men in the western world, if the Captain put them into little wooden lifeboats and out into the cold, dark North Atlantic in the middle of the night on a lark, you can bet there would be severe consequences and repercussions both for him, his crew, and the White Star Line later on, and Captain Smith would be fully aware of this. So when I see lifeboats being loaded, I KNOW, this ship is going to SINK. But again, Victorian Era, versus 21st century.

Maybe make a video about the possibility of surviving the sinking if you were in the stern of the ship during the final plunge and break-up of the Titanic... I'm sure maybe a few survived from the people on the stern, but what seemed like a safe option if you had no more lifeboats left, ultimately ended up being a very dangerous situation, especially considering the lifting up the stern, the abrupt collapse during the breakup and the lift up again of 90 degrees before eventually plunging out of sight completely 😵🙌🏻

I agree, I would have liked to have seen the crew, and possibly passengers as well, disassembling the ship's minor infrastructure and creating makeshift rafts for people to potentially save the passengers in the water. They don't need to be complicated, They only need to possess one quality: the ability to float with at least one person aboard it. My idea of this would be to leave these "rafts", as many as time would allow them to create, unsecured on the decks, so they float to the surface after the ship sunk, or even as it split apart, to give the people in the water a chance, small as that chance may be, to find something to get out of the water, improving their chances of survival. How many people would have been saved by this act, probably not many, proportionately. Assuming you end up near one of these "rafts", you would also be competing with everyone else in the water as well to get to it. Don't expect any chivalry or etiquette at this point, because everyone will be out for themselves only. Even if you do get to relative safety out of the water, you would then have to actively defend your spot... Even living victims of the sinking, in the water, could potentially give themselves more time by clustering together to conserve SOME body heat. This solution would buy them a LITTLE more time, but few if any would likely remain alive long enough to be rescued. They would STILL be wet, in an entire OCEAN of freezing water, and TIME itself would STILL be AGAINST them, but it would SLIGHTLY increase their odds... An argument for this action that could be made: Is it worth it to prolong the suffering to even try it? Another, more macabre, more disturbing, possibility of survival in the water... lash the dead bodies together to form a large raft. The combination of the life belts, with the surface area of the bodies that were wearing them would give adequate floatation to possibly save several survivors as well. You can repent later, when your safe. Not only would those bodies save multiple lives, but it would also make it easier to gather up so they can be proper internment later. I am quite sure anyone surviving this method would suffer nightmares for the rest of his/her life, but then again, so did the rest of the survivors...

Why did the deck chairs get thrown in the water? They wouldn't keep you from freezing to death.
@js3599
@js3599 2 жыл бұрын
@@karenryder6317 To stay dry in that situation is ideal to maximize your chances of survival. A lifeboat is definitely the best chance. To be wet, but able to somehow get out of water might buy you, maybe, an hour or two of life, possibly longer if you are lucky. This estimate is an optimistic MAYBE... To be completely in the water, with no way out, you would have, at best, 10-15 minutes to live. Anything beyond that is in the miracle zone. In that situation, even one deck chair could make the difference... BUT... You won't be happy or comfortable, regardless if your wet or dry in ANY situation in a scenario like that, AND time is against you...

Love this topic! I've considered this exact same thing many times and the last scenario you described is exactly what I figured I'd do.....Make sure the wife and kids are safe and then work on building a raft. Build it out of spare life belts and whatever else I can find that would float and head on up to the bow and wait for the water to come up to the deck and step off onto my raft....not taking any spot in a lifeboat that could have been used for a woman or child. Slightly off topic.... I've always loved the work of Ken Marshall. He has painted dozens of incredible portraits of the Titanic Both before and after the sinking and I've always wanted to see if he could do some kind of rendition of what the wreck would have looked like immediately after the sinking.....like what the wreck would have looked like on April 16, 1912. If anyone could pull that off, It would be him!

Nah, the brandy didn't actually help him survive the freezing water (it increases skin-level circulation, making you feel warm but actually making you vent all your body-heat into the environment). What it did was make him completely numb and led to an almost three-stooges-esque escape which he never would have thought to do if he weren't drunk.

Easy - as long as you’re a first class woman passenger who does as she’s told and actually gets in a lifeboat when it’s offered. Everyone else, a bit trickier unless your a crewman nominated to staff the life boats (I think the BBofT regs required 2 crew per boat)

FYI - just a fun addition. The old TV series "The Time Tunnel" drops its two time travellers on the Titanic in its pilot episode. They try to warn the crew and when that fails, begin making plans on how to survive...if the people controlling the tunnel can't recall them to the present or shift them to another place in time & space.

I've heard this for a lot of different things.....Given a two hour head start could you........ The Titanic would be hard I would wait until about 15 minutes before the first guy saw it then I would scream bloody about seeing the iceberg with my 40 20 vision whatever. I think the Kennedy assassination would be easy. All you would have to do would tell every cop you see that a man in that window stuck a gun out. If push came to shove you could go up there and stop it yourself. 9/11 would also be pretty easy if you had the names of all of those involved. The FBI would want to know how you got your information and would probably throw you in jail but you could still stop it

If I had a family I think I would ask my wife to board a lifeboat alone, so I could pretend i’m a single dad with my kid and get a spot on another boat (similar to how Cal escaped in the Titanic movie) I wonder, Sam, are there any real life cases in which a family actually had that plan and did just that?!?

Hey, Sam. Could you do a video on the SS Frankfurt's role in the night the Titanic went down? It seems to be quite an interesting story, but I'm finding confusing and partially contradicting information on this ship. But apparently it was the first ship to respond to Titanic's distress signal and also one of the closest ones, with her captain supposedly estimating that they could reach the Titanic by 2 AM or earlier (which would have saved a lot of lives). The 2 variants of her story I've seen have her simply not finding the Titanic due to the wrong coordinates or turning away in the first place due to a rude message from Jack Phillips (similar to the Californian) for being either german or simply using a competing wireless set. The Frankfurt is in most charts depicted as being 140 miles away when they received the distress signals but at least an article on encyclopedia titanica claims it was the closest ship at less than 20 miles. The story also appears to be intertwined with the story of the Mount Temple, which either was heading towards the Titanic at full speed or hiding close by, possibly to not risk it's 1500 people going through the ice field, with the Captain lying about what the Frankfurt did to divert attention away. Either way, there appears to be an interesting, little known story here.
@sorrenblitz805

Frankfurt wasn't really the closest. Technically the Californian was closest and Carpathia second closest. The Frankfurt had trouble understanding the English telegraph signals from Titanic and kept asking "Are you Sinking?" And the Titanic operator having already given multiple signals of SOS and MGY Titanic is Sinking, got frustrated and told them to stay out of the chatroom basically. Titanic Honor And Glory does a really good live stream where they talk in depth about the ships communicating with Titanic that night.

No. The Frankfurt was way too far away. Closest ship was Californian which didnt respond. Second closest was Mount Temple which did respond but werent able to arrive before third closest Carpathia (mainly due to ice field). The only ship that could have arrived before titanic sank at 2:20 was Californian.

Hi there 😊 new to the channel and already binge watching 👀 😇 Keep up the great work you're doing, it's very educating 👍 As for me as a random guy on board who time travels and knows a bit more than the rest, I think I'd put on my thermo diver suit that keeps the warm of my body, appropriate shoes in order not to contact with freezingly cold water and get a flask with brandy or something like that but never vodka! (I don't wanna get drunk, I just wanna keep my blood a bit more fluidy thus keep my body warm enough to swim away) . Yes, I'd pick a large door and slide down into the water instead of falling into the sea 🌊

If I was a time traveller and had advanced knowledge? I'd go back to something like April 12th and I would bring some technological items with me like a smart phone or tablet and a solar charger for daytime charging, perhaps your whole Titanic series loaded onto it with dive footage of the wreak. Maybe even James Cameron's Titanic movie, because why not? All in offline mode and stored on the phones micro SD card so that I can prove to the captain that I knew my sh*t. I'd sit down with him and enjoy a nice first-class meal so that I can fill his head with all the 21st century knowledge that I have and show him what is ultimately about to happen with his ship and it's passengers. I'd convince him to not ignore the ice warnings, either slow or stop the ship, wait until daylight for better visibility to navigate the ice field and then proceed with caution. Doing all of this to avoid the collision in the first place from ever happening.

Smith didn't ignore the ice warnings by the way. He changed course more southerly twice. The last ice warnings weren't ever brought to him because Jack Phillips having just spent most of the night before fixing the Marconi machine was working through a backlog of passenger messages and had to work through that instead as the telegraph operators didn't work for White Star they worked for Marconi and were there primarily to send messages for passengers.

You can't do that! Changing the time line could change history. Not necessarily for the better. 1700 lives saved. Their future actions and interactions. Their offspring. Their presence isn't in real life. If it was... It is what it is. Besides you would not have had an audience with the Captain. And if you managed such a meeting its doubtful your toys and fancy talk would influence him. A night in the brig to bring you to your senses seems more probable.

Well provided you don't instantly die from cold shock from contact with the water, the shock will pretty much scramble your brain for a few moments and as you struggle to get your bearings to swim after your pretty hard fall to glassy water. Then the cold will likely sap you of your ability to even move your arms and legs the more and more you try to work them and if you make it to the boat the people on the boat have a 50/50 chance of helping you or panicking and beating you away with an oar to prevent you from capsizing them and killing them too.
