The company that owned blender sold (released) it on the condition it can never be sold for profit. Its license prohibites it. It's not owned by anyone either, so no one can sell it.

One more thing that's worth pointing out. Adobe or Autodesk could just fork Blender tomorrow and make their own version that they could sell with paid support packages and paid addons... this would probably make more sense then buying the Blender Foundation where half the employees would quit the moment they did.

The main difference is they would still have to release their code changes for everyone else to compile. So making it paid would work rather poorly.

As long as Ton is breathing, this isn't going to happen. Ton is far happier working with small teams and Indy studios then he would have ever been working for big studios and providing enterprise support for the big bucks. Money isn't high on his priorities... he cares far more about letting people all around the world do and make interesting things. To him, that's his legacy, not how much money he made.

To "buy" Blender, I think read somewhere, they would have to get approval from every single contributor of the code over the years, and that is basically impossible.

I love Adobe software; however, they charge a lot. I love that Blender is free and only charges for add-ons. It is a great deal and helps artists like me to learn at their own pace. Thank you Blender family.

Those idiots won't sell their previous versions. If they sell for 1 time pay less than 50 dollars. I bet many people would've supported Adobe by buying instead of pirating it.
