The issue isn’t just the abuse, but that player will always and only be known for their sexuality, that announcement will eclipse anything they did on the pitch. Does a player really want to be known for being gay rather than their goals and performances?

That's a very good point, surely a sportsperson wants to be known for the trophies they won, the great matches they influenced etc. An example is the Derby County players a few years ago, will they be remembered for their football talent or drink driving?!

I think they would receive support from fellow players and fans alike, but the problem is the media, they'd make it global news and that player would forever be in the spotlight, rather than been left to simply get on with their job and personal life in peace

I agree to a point. I think the players would be supportive but the fans is a tricky situation as most fans wouldn't care but the minority of negative fans can influence the majority within a stadium situation. I 100% agree that the media would cause a shitstorm with their coverage when like you say the players are there to do their job and personal life shouldn't come into it as it has no effect on how well they can play football.

I’m 35 and I went school with people who I knew were gay probably before they did, I don’t understand why when I was in school it wasn’t a big deal or even an issue and yet there’s some football fans that don’t have that kind of maturity no matter what age they are, some football fans need to get a brain in their head, also, being gay isn’t the reason that the footballer missed the shot or didn’t save the ball, straight people can be crap at football too!!! Openly gay footballers shouldn’t have to worry about coming out, it’s such a non issue as far as football goes.

I would be hopeful that a gay player would receive plenty of support from the majority of people, however by being the first to come out, you do put a target on your head for a barrage of homophobic abuse. The amount of hate they would get would be immeasurable and even with all the support they may receive or how strong that player is, there's only so much a person can take before they reach an ultimatum or breaking point. I see 3 barriers to players coming out as gay. 1. the amount of money in the prem that come from homophobic countries (anyone that plays for Man City or Newcastle would be sold if they came out now). 2. The amount of players in the prem who are deeply religious and homophobic themselves, so there's a problem of acceptance in the dressing room. 3. I understand that there's some huge differences between football and rugby, whether its the fans, players or clubs. However, I still think it would've been interesting to have spent a minute or two comparing the two sports, how rugby seems to be more open and accepting and where the difference might stem from. Is that a problem though? All communities look for a positive role-model to look up to, especially from communities who are a minority within a specific field. As a LGBT sports fan, it was really great to see the positive support for Carl Nassib when he came out last year. Does that mean I deify the man or suddenly support the Raiders? Not at all, but I’m happy to see someone like me in an environment where I wouldn’t be traditionally accepted being accepted. Much in the way that practically every black British footballer in the 90s sited Laurie Cunningham and Cyrille Regis as their idols growing up, seeing someone reach the highest level that’s like you is inspiring and shows you that despite you not being the traditional archetypical player (in these cases straight and white) you can be both successful and accepted. Further to the Nassib case, you’ll notice there was a big media storm about it for the best part of a week, but pretty much all coverage was positive and Nassib wasn’t really hounded that much (one official press conference and that’s about it) and then no-one really talked about it because everyone who isn’t a moron accepted it and let him live his life, and that’s a guy in a macho sport in a pretty equally homophobic country to ours

There are many gay top athletes in different sports you don't hear anything about them... why is football players being gay not accepted and respected. It's how they perform on the field and not about what they prefer in their private time/lives. Look at Nigel Owens he is openly gay for a long time now and one of the most respected referee ( retired now) in the world... for a gay athlete not being open about their gender preferences will have a influence on their performances and mentally challenged every day and should be a good thing if they are open and come out to the public. People should support the athletes for that instead of being homofobe... Social media doesn't help them either as everybody can leave comments make threats without filter and make the matters worse for athletes who it's about ... all in all nowadays it shouldn't be such big of a deal if you're gay in top sports 😔

Football is a completely different culture compared to other sports, in a lot of countries it's tribal, hard-core and traditional following so that will be a huge no no. Football is largely an male dominated sport and most likely ppl who watch football don't want to be reminded of homosexuality in regards if an player is gay or not. I think the documentary tries to make a good point, but misses, it’s not so much the team/players etc that are the problem.. it’s more so the fans and the abuse-culture which is still rife among most football clubs fan-groups, why would any football player want to come out as gay knowing that they probably wouldn’t be able to play without being chanted at or abused over it every single time they got the ball? Same with racism, more needs doing to prevent it from happening, more players might then feel more inclined to come out freely etc.

@safebans1369

What youre saying implies that people that are out do so because they arent concerned about their privacy. People can be as public or private about the intricacies of their sex life as they want imo, but try and keep an entire relationship with someone you love private. Most gay and bi men dont want to be in a relationship with someone who isnt willing to be open, and understandably so. I know what youre trying to say, but being in a position where you cant openly be in a relationship with someone you love is much more someone being made to feel uncomfortable being themselves than wanting to be private.

The players can't even be proper role models with the way they act. Rugby IS the man's game and nigel owen came out gay and Gareth Thomas and they never had any trouble. Be masculine, Don’t make a big song and dance press conference when you come out, just do it via an Instagram post or something. Like if someone gets a new gf they’ll post it just do the same but with a bf. That and don’t be easily offended by banter or even yobs in the stands and you’ll be fine. If you actually ignore the violent/or loud yobs they’ll eventually shut up or get bored and move on to someone/something else. It may not be the most politically correct advice but as someone who only mildly watches football and is gay it’s what I would do. Likewise avoid politics else you’ll have a hard time playing in certain countries either for their teams or just playing for an English team abroad.
