I will admit to never seeing this on Broadway. I have only seen the movie version of The Wiz and while Nipsey Russell did a good job of singing this song, Ne-Yo fucking killing it. I actually had tears in my eyes listening to him pour his heart (pun intended) and soul into this song.

Since the only other version I heard of this song was the talk-sing version Nipsy Russell did for the 1977 movie, I had no idea how powerful and soulful this song actually is, and now it's my favorite song of the song show!

What the movie did was change the order of songs around. And that change up also explains why Ne-Yo and Nipsey Russel, performed the song so differently from each other. In the play, the Tinman sings it when the Wizard asks him he really wants to have a heart since a heart can be broken at which the Tinman basically cries out in anguish as he sings this song. Crying on about how glad he would be if he could experience his heart being broken as it would confirm the fact that he even HAS a heart. In the movie the song was done as Dorothy and the Scarecrow find him, basically being the seat of that big old metal woman and being rusted solid. Nipsey Russel doesn't sing it with as much anguish but he sings it in the point of view of somebody who had been stagnant for many years and looks on in wonder and sheer relieve as his situation has suddenly changed for the better. Nipsey's croaked vocals also go well with the "Rusted solid" part of the situation the TinMan had been in.

I was watching this is music class this week and all the white kids and italian kids didn't know what the wiz was but they have heard of the wizard of oz. Only me and another kid that was dark skinned like me in my music class have ever heard of the wiz 2015 version. One light skinned kid in my class said he wished my music class didn't see the wiz 2015 version. I think he didn't wanna see it cuz there was only black people in it. Lol, and he is kinda racist. He should appreciate musicals/plays with more black people in them. Lol, I am a big fan of the wiz 2015 songs and I love that all the people in the movie were black people. I thought Evelenie was raven Goodwin from good luck charlie show. Lol. Plz get this to 1,200 likes if you love any type of music that black people have sang or if u love Ne-yo and the wiz.
