What Would it Look Like to Live in a Sustainable Economy? Professor Sir Dieter Helm
This video features Professor Sir Dieter Helm discussing his latest book, "Legacy." Please note that this video DOES NOT contain any paid endorsements.
In this episode, we sit down with economist and author Professor Sir Dieter Helm to discuss his vision for a sustainable economy. Helm asks the question, "what would it look like to live in a sustainable economy?" and offers a framework for understanding and addressing climate change.
He argues that the current narrative around net-zero is unrealistic and that a more balanced approach is needed, one that takes into account the realities of the global economy and the need for sustainable economic growth.
Helm emphasises the importance of focusing on capital assets, rather than just flows, and of considering the intergenerational impacts of our actions. He also discusses the need for a new kind of economic thinking that takes into account the realities of the 21st century, rather than relying on outdated models from the 20th century.
Tune in for a thought-provoking conversation on the challenges and opportunities of achieving a sustainable future.
This episode is brought to you by United Renewables in association with the University of Oxford.

Is this (not "tapping" on the breaks, and dissing "Net Zero") supposed to be a direct counter to Prof. Myles Allen (who uses that analogy and pushes Net Zero)?

Thanks for bringing up Prof. Myles Allen's perspective, it's always enriching to consider various viewpoints on the matter.

@@conversationsonclimate Yeah, also, if you look up how much iron fertile women need, then ask an AI to create a meal plan for a fertile woman that specifically has enough iron/heme iron in it, it won't do it. Half the reason people are going essentially m4d these days is iron deficiency, it has severe cognitive effects. The pending bans on red meat, poultry, eggs etc, the push for veganism, is an attack on cognitive performance by via heme iron restriction.

Helm presents some credible arguments. Unfortunately, in 2024, his working assumptions are profoundly flawed. Firstly, the Holocene climate in which we evolved is no more. Our climate is hurtling away from Holocene stability - the Earth’s energy imbalance has doubled over several decades. As a consequence, the cryosphere is losing a trillion tonnes of ice annually - this is not the behaviour of a system remotely close to equilibrium. Secondly, our renewable natural capital is in many case no longer renewable. The majority of the major ecosystem on Earth are irreversibly degraded and in varying states of collapse. Thirdly, peer reviewed research in science journals (not economics journals) demonstrates unequivocally that clean economic growth is an oxymoron. Conclusion - we are out of time for an orderly response to the climate and environmental crises, regardless of the solutions promoted by economists.

It's alarming how the climate crisis is progressing. We need to act fast to mitigate its effects.
