I spent 31 years in the Army and I’m telling you, even for me it would be extremely difficult to live in the wild for long periods of time, especially if you had to bug out quickly and were not prepared. You’re first option should be to bug in. You must live in the right location to bug in. It would definitely be survival of the fittest and you definitely would rather survive as a community, not too much unlike Walking Dead. Even the most prepared, alone, would become targets of those that need supplies.
@nutbastard2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, bug out is basically survival pornography. Bug in is way more viable in that you don't need to travel or load up a bunch of gear. You're way better off staying put, working with your community, and keeping the shelter you already have. Anyone that thinks they can just wander off into the woods with a gun and make that work... well, what are they waiting for? The people who can do it, already do it, and you don't hear about them. Even top tier survivalists struggle, and that's when they aren't competing for resources out in the bush. If everyone fucks off to the woods, well there's going to be a lot of people in the woods. Fire a shot, cool, everyone within 3 miles is coming your way to take the deer you just shot while you're busy with it. Beyond even the logistics, you'll starve to death eating deer and rabbit. It's all protein, no fat really. Fish are much more viable, but again, when a couple million people all start fishing at once, yikes. Things go sideways, the only thing you need is a decent gun and one round - for yourself.

For the first month or so, then 90% of the population will be dead. Large groups wouldn't survive because food and water pressures. It's incredibly hard to provide enough food and water for a small group, any group over 5 or 6 wouldn't last. Unless they are professionals.

fun fact: you can run most vehicles on very high proof alcohol, like above 75%, since most vehicles made after 2000 are rated for e85, but using "beverage" alcohol would very quickly start to cause performance issues since most beverage alcohols contain sugar and weve all heard a "sugar-in-the-gastank" story; and in freezing cold weather your injectors will have a very hard time atomizing the fuel *Especially* vehicles with direct injection (what shoots into the combustion chamber is a very very fine mist at low rpm)

Absolutely, but sadly we’ve bred out those survival skills for the most part. Well maybe not sadly, we simply don’t need them anymore so there was no real reason for us to keep them. And let’s be honest, why would you even want to survive the apocalypse? There’s nothing left, no structure, no law, every man for themselves. Nothing to look forward to. Just surviving because you want to? I guess, but realistically I think the vast majority of us would check out either by starvation, murder, or suicide.

@@ajunlimited oh it’s definitely pessimistic lol, that I have no argument with. I just think that most people either a)wouldn’t have the skills necessary to live, b) wouldn’t have the mental capacity to live in such situations, or c) plainly wouldn’t have the balls to completely surrender themselves to their caveman like nature. Kill or be killed, yes humans want to survive but how far are most of us willing to go to do that? Something I think about often.

To survive for a long time you either need a serious well fortified bunker and stockpile or an above ground compound with like 20 other families that all agreed beforehand that this was the plan. Not only that, but several people in the community would have to already be living there sustaining the compound and doing some farming and livestock raising already. And you would need to have it near a river or have a large water collection and irrigation system. You would also need the compound to be fortified with razorwire, grenade nets, kill holes, towers and sandbags. Wouldn't hurt to have a mote and at least 12 acres to farm on as well. But you need to defend those acres, and if you don't want to be weak malnourished b12 deficient 3rd worlders, then you would need grazing land for your livestock. Basically lots of fucking work just to continue living and breathing. You may need more people as well. You need enough people fortifications and armaments to fend off at least 200 or so bandits, because that's the upper end of what is possible to organize. Bandit clans could get bigger and eventually the most successful one will find you, because if they are successful, they are winning and if they are winning they have good pillaging strategies. And if they are good they will smoke out all other homes and smaller communities. They will run out of targets. Your compound would likely be at the bottom of everyone's list. It's easy to mug one family, maybe a neighborhood or small community one by one. Or lone survivors, they will be adept at hunting people, scavenging and sieging.
@flyingtigers78562 жыл бұрын
Savage reality right here folks. I'm not sure on the numbers as far as farming go, but otherwise this is the moat accurate description of short to medium term survival in a post apocalyptic, complete societal breakdown I've read. Think back to "medieval" times with small villages fortified against outsiders and raiding parties that would kill the men, rape the women, and loot supplies and valuables. Individual preppers will need to join a community or be found and perish. Lets hope it never happens.

I already have a fully camouflaged shelter built in the mountains of Washington State, miles from anywhere. I built it about 4 miles from the nearest road, and 1/2 a mile from a natural spring that runs down into a small beaver dam pond that's full of trout. I mean full! I caught 5 browns out of it in 5 casts, and released them. I found this area while hiking off trail. Additionally, the area is filled with rabbits and grouse, which is a land bird. I can trap both, and use them for sustainable food. In early fall, there are large areas covered with fruiting Huckleberry bushes, which I can preserve through winter. Huckleberries are related to blueberries, which are an antioxidant that's packed with everything from Vitamin A, B, C, E, Calcium, Iron and other minerals. Being in the NW evergreens, I also have an abundant supply of Pine Nuts, Fiddlehead Ferns, Yarrow, mushrooms and so many other edible plants. If you know what you're looking at, Washington State is basically an all you can eat buffet. I wouldn't use my guns to hunt unless I had no other way, because the sound carries for miles, and you're just putting a target on yourself. Trap and farm is how you survive without drawing attention. The hardest thing would be getting through winter and the heavy snow. It wouldn't be fun but I'd be using as little energy as possible to bring my metabolism down, and calorie requirement intake. In the fall, before the snow, I'd probably dig out an underground burrow under the shelter, which would be much easier to keep warm, and with much less effort. Fire would only be a requirement for emergency cooking, so very low risk any smoke would be discovered by others. I also plan to take 1 person with me, which will double the amount of food I will need to procure, but the benefits are irreplaceable, physically, emotionally and psychologically. You can't take a family. You can't take a group. You will all die, and you will be forced to visibly watch it happen. You wouldn't survive after that, even if you outlived them all. Then... just wait it out. How would I know when to head back to civilization? The real question is, why would I want to do that?

@@newatlantisrepublic6844 Honestly, I wouldn't want someone with me who can survive on their own as well as I could. Job security and all that. This will be another issue for survival groups. You'd think it would help with survivability, but people get scared, paranoid, and start creating hierarchies which creates power struggles and hostility. You'd do much better taking a chick who's only good at cooking and gathering. That's an enormous burden off the survivalist, and they'll need you to survive, so you're less likely to be killed in your sleep.

As an amputee who tried to save my leg for 3 years, including 14 surgeries + the amputation, I can attest that marijuana is a FAR BETTER pain reliever than any opiates available. Opiates dull the pain to bearable levels but never cut the pain out, not to mention the addiction withdrawals when concluded. On the other hand, marijuana makes the pain completely disappear! Approximately 15-20 minutes after smoking I would realize that the pain was completely gone. 5:54
