I used to listen to this all the time when I was in elementary school. At the time, I did not realize how great these lyrics are. Wow, I wish songs were still like this today.

All these people complaining that the Bastille version's better, you gotta understand what that emotional somber tone does compared to this "more upbeat" original. The cover version's somber tone from the context of Bastille makes sense because it's from the perspective of some middle class bloke talking to a stripper, he's gonna see her story as exceptional, as particularly heartbreaking because he "can't even relate" to the stuff she's been through and she's right because he's not only a man but also someone who's stable enough to not be in a community where this story is more common. The tone underscores the class divide where Bastille would be living in a world oblivious to how this story is not exceptional. In contrast the original has a faster rhythm, is more "mundane" in sound because the person she's talking to is from her community and to someone who is used to knowing girls who had to become strippers to support themselves by virtue of being from a poor/working class community (e.g. the friend saying he knows "this mad shawty goin through the same thing"). There isn't the class divide, she's talking to someone who's on a similar level to her when it comes to broad economic class ("gurl I know if my motha could do it then baby you could do it"), except her experience is gendered in a way he wouldn't have experienced. The original has a guy who "can't even relate" because he's not a woman. That's what makes this version so much more contextually relevant that a lot of people seem to be missing. I don't think Bastille did it the wrong way but he did it in a way that would fit his broader middle class audience who wouldn't be seeing these stories as something they hear from friends or friends of friends. City High tho, they're singing about their people and that's what makes it powerful
@Good199877 жыл бұрын
3kbote they both seem very powerful and i totally agree that just “comparing them” is shitty because they are both from very different perspectives and talking to very different audiences. Bastille didnt just take and copy the song, he made a renedition that his audience understands, and gets the message to people who honestly may have just turned this song off. Personally i enjoy the bastille cover more but im also biased because i heard them first and enjoy bastilles other music

For context I'm a 31 white straight male 😂 but in all seriousness I love this song but it makes me tear up every time I hear it but I can't help but listen to it every time again. Moral of the story is you never know what someone is going through or has been through so please no matter what show everyone respect and be kind to everyone please for the sake of our humanity. Some of these lyrics hit me so hard it's unreal so next time you think of judging someone remember you don't know how their day was how their life was what they're going through just love all I cannot say it enough and I cannot say please enough we all need to learn respect for others and love for others no matter the race or religion or whatever it doesn't matter we're all human

Why don't many of you get the point, message, and story of this song? It's about a single mom who got knocked up and the dad is gone, she doesn't have the money to provide him with what he needs so she does this. She sacrifices herself for the sake of her son..If you are willing to do something so low just for your child well i'd say your a pretty damn good mother.

Wrong. Love Doesn't Hurt. If it hurts it's not love; that's the difference. We're confusing pain with love. Those types of girls don't deserve hate or pain, no one does. I hope on day you gain enough insight to see this.

@jorayx For sure. I agree with your comment. I get what he's saying- he wants her to push forth, and have a better existence. But words don't travel far-action does. Yet is he gonna take action to help her onto her feet? Is he gonna point her in the right direction? Take her in until she is able to fend for herself? Most likely not.

Ima cold metal head but I love this song along with most r&b, hip hop, and rap from the 90s early 2000s. Back when music on the radio told a real story and had a positive message and taste. They had a tempo shift! Every “pop” song now is a straight heave kick dance beat and cicada sizzles in the background. No substance or originality. Same “team” of producers regurgitating the same “formula” that keeps selling “hits”

I witnessed this action in the two years i worked in that bar that's what gives me the right. as for what did i know about the girls not a lot but i did get to know there work ethic. and finally yes every one has there own problems but you don't blame others for your choices yes i made a different choice reading your comments reminds me of an old saying, that It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt your arguments are based on emotion not fact.

I love it when an artist covers a song and actually fixes the original. I am obsessed with Bastille. I know practically every word ever written by Daniel Campbell Smith. In this case, I like the original better. In my opinion the cover did not fix the original, but that's just my opinion and we're all entitled to our opinions. In 2022 I would love for someone to cover this song and make everyone hear the full message, focus on what the dudes are saying and not just the chorus while keeping the original sound and flow and blah blah blah because I do love the original, but I think someone could make it better...

@MissTeenageNothing In the song he says that he saw his mom go through the same thing and she persevered to the best of her ability. He saw her and knew she was better than the effort she was putting forth. I feel where you're coming from, he had no place trying to criticize her without knowing her pain,but I can get what he was saying to say too.
