1982: Atari, Dungeons & Dragons, anticipating Return of the Jedi, Baseball Cards, StratOMatic Baseball, Rocky 3, Saturday morning Cartoons, Star Trek Wrath of Khan, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, MTV. That was really the beginning of entertainment and pop culture realizing that kids are an important demographic to target. My older brother grew up in the 70’s most of this stuff did not exist when he was a kid.

I was 9 years old in 1982 and 19 years old in 1992. In '82, my parents strictly controlled what music, movies, and TV we were allowed to watch, so I didn't get much exposure to the pop culture of the time. In '92, I was in the Army stationed in Germany, so I also missed out on most of American pop culture that year as well. As a result, I don't have strong memories of either year. Maybe the debut of Image Comics was the most memorable thing from '92. If I had to relive one year, however, then I would probably want to relive 1992. Since I was living on my own (sort of, I was in Army barracks) and getting a regular paycheck. So I'd like to go back and spend those paychecks on stuff that I know would hold their value today, but is just too expensive to really collect now. Maybe I'd be able to get a copy of the first printing of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 for less than the price of a new car.

1982 forever! At age 10, for music, I was listening to Jerry Reed... thankfully I found 80s New Wave by 2010, lol... and, yeah, I was into alternative rock big time in 92... REM and the B-52s, but nowadays give me more Wall of Voodoo, Simple Minds, Devo, New Order, and - yup - The Human League, LOL... still love Joan Jett and J Geils band... then again, 1992 had Utah Saints, 2 Unlimited, and 808 State. Techno still holds up... For movies, no contest at all. 1992 has nothing compared to 1982. TV. Again, 1992 has little, apart from Roseanne and Night Court's final season. Which isn't saying too much either as the show's best days were around 1987! I loved Andy Rooney's 60 Minutes segments. He was timeless.

Maybe because I am so old now, I feel like I was around 6 in 1992, at least in my mentality. I remember hearing Abracadabra on the radio, then seeing a color story about it in the comics section of the Sunday newspaper (not sure why they did that). We also went to see Wrath of Khan instead of ET, which all of my friends got to see. First time since Empire we actually went to a sit down movie (instead of a drive in) and did made us watch Khan instead of ET……. My neighbor loved Doctor who and used to cut out cardboard figures from Manila folders and color them into doctor who figs. I had lost a lot of my Star Wars figs and ships in a move back to NY from FL, and had not discovered GI Joes yet. Dark times in 1982 my friend, dark times (by the way, I turned 8 in 82).

Growing up it was '60s- '80s for me. The '70s stuck with me. The '90s was when music took a nose dive for me. The hottest band in the world was putting out music nobody really liked until they reunited and then all the old stuff came back. But shows and movies were pretty good. Like Jurassic Park.

I'm mixed, it would be hard to choose between 80s and 90s. I was 7 in 1992 and was absolutely hyped for Batman Returns, and I couldn't wait to see it. 🦇 Basic Instinct is a great movie. Michael Douglas has some really good ones. My favorite Star Trek was Star Trek 6 "The Undiscovered Country" since I was a kid. :) We (my sister and myself) were raised on country, but we switched to grunge and alternative rock on our own in 1992 just in time to catch some great bands. We were both into Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, REM, Garbage, Bush, Jane's Addiction, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Mazzy Star, Faith No More .. (I know some of those were a little after 92) I like The Human League, but I like the songs I know. :) It's like a synth, pop/rock band. I like a lot of different kinds of music, so it's not too much of a stretch for me. Plus, the two backup singers are really cute. :) haha Thanks for the video

I was born in 1980. I'm still picking 1982. In all honesty, I thought the 90's were very lame. I didn't like the alternative music, the movies were...okay. Now, 1992 was only the beginning of grunge/alternative. I'm glad you said heavy metal was still happening. Guns N' Roses, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Van Halen, Firehouse were still very popular in 1992. I had a blast listening to that. I no longer watched cartoons in 1992. 1982. 1992 was a distillation of all that came before. G.I.Joe sucked in 92. Star Wars was only just starting a comeback in books and comics after a long hiatus. Grunge was a good alternative to hair metal, but no where near the iconic nature of MTV, Thriller, and all the New Wave music coming from Europe. U2 and the Police were about to break big. Prince and Madonna only just entered the culture. Movies were epic, groundbreaking. Compare E.T., Blade Runner, Wrath of Kahn, TRON, The Thing, An Officer And A Gentleman, Tootsie, Conan the Barbarian, The Dark Crystal, Poltergeist to what Batman Returns? Dracula? Those were cartoonish, if enjoyable. Only Reservoir Dogs saves 1992.

We're the same age, Junkie. As far as music, I have to give it to the 80's hands down. TV shows...I hate to say it, but I'm going to have to give it to the 90's. But it was close. That 60 Minutes being number one in both kind of ruined a potential tie. Almost anything in the 90's would have beat that. Movies....I have to go with the 80's. Still close, but 80's gets it by a little. I have to give the 90's the cartoons. The stuff in the 80's was mostly formulaic bullshit. The 90's had X-Men and Batman...And the others just kind of evened out. Surprised you didn't see Meatballs and Spaghetti...Came on CBS during that same block that had Gilligan's Planet. You may have just passed on it. It was a rock band with two brothers with the last name Meatball and one's wife named Spaghetti. And they had a dog. And had a lot of music and the same old silly adventures all the shows from that time period had. The only thing that sticks out in my mind is the theme song. Which is on KZbin whenever I just need to get it out of my head.

Junkman....Color Me Badd was not a metal group, not even a rock group. Not even close. They were a R&B group and about as far from Rock as you can get. Its hard to compare the years based off the Top 10 on the pop charts, since most of the most influential music of 1992 was not quite mainstream yet, so the pop charts were not reflective of the major change in music that was happening in the early to mid 90s. 1992 wins hands down.
