Rather, we should say according to the thoroughly discredited Cardinal Bertone, since we have it only from him that Sr. Lucy gave him a statement contradicting all of her previous statements. It comes down to believing either Cardinal Bertone or the verifiable statements of Sr. Lucy, such as her formal deposition of March 19, 1983, given to John Paul II through the Apostolic Nuncio to Lisbon, Archbishop Portalupi, regarding his 1982 consecration of the world: "In the Act of offering of May 13, 1982, Russia did not appear clearly as the object of the consecration. And each bishop did not organize in his own diocese a public and solemn ceremony of reparation and consecration of Russia. Pope John Paul II has simply renewed the consecration of the world made by Pope Pius XII on October 31, 1942. Of this consecration of the world one may hope for certain good effects, but not the conversion of Russia. ... The Consecration of Russia has not been done as Our Lady requested.” And again regarding the 1984 consecration of the world, this statement given a few days before the event (commenting on the text of the prayer of consecration that the Pope would use): "Russia does not appear clearly as the only object of the Consecration. ...
