Looking to shift to Construction Management and working on learning Revit/BIM as well. Currently a welder, but have done everything from frame houses to photography to the Marine Corps over the years. Any advice on a viable career path for someone wanting to break their back less and manage more as well as someone who loves to design and model just as much as build and lead? Love your videos, man. Sub’d and liked for sure!

There’s a tech school near me that has both Construction Management Associates and a Architectural Engineer Technician Associates (that teaches CAD/Revit/BIM) but the years school takes I feel I could learn faster on the job and on my own time… in your experience does the Associates Degree really stand out to an employer or just the experience and certificates/etc? Thank you for any insight!
@TreyTan

@@chazlyle41 Sorry for the late reply mate, been pretty busy lately. If you love to build and lead I would say pursuing a path in construction project management would be ideal and eventually become a Project Manager. However, if you are more on the technical side then BIM would be a good fit. Personally I think employers look for experience + certificates more so than an associates degree. However, you always want to keep learning and be in continuous improvement which is why if i were you i would try and take on the associate degree while trying to land an internship in BIM, and after graduating, you'll have both the degree plus the internship experience to kick off your career in BIM. Hope that helps.

@@TreyTan Hey, no worries!! You’ll never hear me being update that someone spends their time OUTSIDE the internet :) Thank you for the thoughtful feedback! It’s been my experience over the years as well that real world experience and certifications that qualify you are more important than a degree in trades. I know as a welder every construction company owners simply wants to know if you have the certs they need to finish building legally, that’s it. I think I’ll stick to the work experience over degree track, thank you for helping me along my journey trying to provide for my family. Have a good one, man.

I'm glad you know what you're looking for. Hand and power tool is a component of safety which will allow you to one day work as a safety manager. However, be prepared that the salary won't be as high as other professions within the industry. Hope that helps!

Thanks for checking out the channel. So first of all, cost controller is a great career to have. I’m going to assume a starting salary of 65k. What roles should I be looking for in construction with a Project Management degree, I served in the Air Force attached to a CE unit doing hvac could i possibly fill a field engineer role and work my way to project manager?
@TreyTan

Yes you can. But given your background I’d say your best bet would be to start with a HVAC contractor and after a few years you can hop over to a GC if you’d like or stay in the company and work your way up to PM level. All the best!
