What you didn't see at the Nascar Cup Series in Chicago

On July 1st and 2nd of 2023, the Nascar Cup Series hits the downtown streets of Chicago! Major fun or Major inconvenience? I think it is a huge opportunity for a change in the culture of Chicago but I do feel some impacts on small businesses and those who live in the loop has some down sides. If done better I believe this could change Chicago for the better OR be added to the reasons Chicago gate keeps.

I live in the heart of the city where it happened. It was odd to see the influx of tourists lol some locals were probably like why ya'll here. But I felt the city feel more like a community so I liked that a lot. Traffic could have been better handled tho

The race garnered 4.32 million viewers, the most views NBC has had for a NASCAR race since the championship race in 2017. To get those numbers, especially for a rain delayed race, is a massive win.

At the end of the day I think for every 1 business impacted negatively, there are several more that see a huge financial benefit, so on the whole it’s good, but the city needs to figure out how to make it right for the handful of businesses hurt by it .

I'm viewing from Australia. Really cool video bud. I hope to travel to Chicago, NY, LA and mostly the City of Boston in my lifetime. However some indiscretions before my 20's, 21 odd years ago, may see me as undesirable by the USA visa/immigration department. NASCAR at Chicago was a wonderful thing. It was as much if not more awesome awesome than when they came to my home track last year, at World Wide Technology Raceway.

If NASCAR ever goes back to Chicagoland out in Joliet, you should definitely head out there. Much cheaper tickets and a more traditional race experience

It's only 30-40 miles from downtown Chicago. Grundy County Speedway is only 60 miles. Wilmot Raceway is 65 miles. Fairbury Speedway is 105 miles. It ain't that bad of a drive if traffic is decent.

Best thing NASCAR have done by far. Take the race to the people! We have the V8 Supercars around the streets of the Gold Coast in Australia. It's a 4 day party event for the people.

I was growing up when Melbourne first got the F1 race in town. There was a lot of polarisation in the viewws on whether it was a good idea. I'm in the camp of progress is good and the potential tourist benefits far outweigh the couple of days inconvenience. Look at Melbourne, 25 Years on and it is a pivotal part of the economy.

I’m from Chicago too but I have to say I thought the race was pretty dope and then had me thinking about if the taste of Chicago was some how combined with this. I am hoping it comes back I saw packed restaurants after the race Sunday night people exploring the city for this first time it was pretty amazing but again if the taste was added which includes local businesses that could be a hit. Just my opinion.

If you live in Chicago area and want to see racing. Just drive north to Road America in Elkhart Lake Wisconsin. You'll see cooler race cars, better racing on a real race track. For A LOT less money. Usually from $45 to $95 a day depending on the event. Also parents can bring their kids 16 and under are free admission. With a paying adult.

Very interesting piece from the inside view. I've seen a few shorts, interviewing local fans on their take and they were all positive but, ya never know. There's always someone hating on the rainbows and kittens moments it seemed to be. I'm a long time NASCAR fan, and I wasn't so hot on this idea of racing in Chicago. I didn't hate on it, I just wasn't on board. For a fan, it's important for you to know, it was historical in several ways what will be carved in stone for NASCAR. First time ever, racing on a street course. Inaugural events in racing don't come along often and this was a big one when you consider everything that will be written on the story of "When NASCAR raced on the streets of Chicago".... I understand the inconvenience having lived near an Indy car street race many moons ago and we treated like "Here comes a big blizzard, stock provisions to be isolated for 5 days" and it was great. Everything normal comes to a stop so a lot oof drinking ensued. I'm still waiting to see the balance sheet and feedback to was it all worth it? Hope you follow up with some more!

To answer your question yes they technically race in Chicago but in Jolliet (2001-2019 covid cancel 2020) and they wanted to come back to the Chicago market but be actually in Chicago

Well they are a dying breed. Unlike a single starbucks wouldn't hurt but when you are a one off shop business it's huge. I would like to see more community events like this for sure! Just it should be beneficial even for the little guys
