Ive been in this hobby about 28 years keeping fish in tanks and ponds. After we moved 2 years ago we didn't have our pond and didn't setup any tanks. About 6 months ago our lives were almost turned upside down with our teenage daughter and luckily everything worked out but getting back into fish helped her a ton and helped us as a family. Hopefully one day I'll build another amazing pond but for now our 15 fish tanks with all kinds of fish helps my daughter and me a ton with stress and anxiety. So this has always been good for me but I feel it saved my daughter's life. Thanks for sharing this! 👍

Lisa is so relatable as the employee! Whenever I got a customer that wanted fish, most people got their eyes attached to the Gibbiceps (sailfin pleco), and they asked if they could have that in their 15 gallon tank. Always had to say no. They always looked terrified when I told them how big they get 😂

At 3:19 is where the employees need to make a power move. “ thankfully you bought a 10 gallon tank already, so now you can quarantine your fish. Now you just need to get a tank sized appropriately for the ---- that you really want. Quarantine in a smaller tank is easier and less expensive than treating a large tank as medications are dosed per gallon, not per fish” This will start some on the path for good procedure as well as allowing the stores to make a little bit more money. Also it makes it safer for the fish

As to tank placement, many old homes were constructed far better than current homes, but either way it would be beneficial to contact a contractor to have them inspect the floor where you intend to put a 55 gallon or larger tank. That much weight in a small space can cause damage to the structural support if it is insufficiently sized. Reinforcement may be required.

Mostly because of the wonderful people of KGTropicals

You keep harping on and on and on (and on) about that boring nitrogen cycle, and to be quite frank... Good thing you do! When I set up my 27g tank nearly a year ago, it was guys like you who made me think "okay, so I guess if they all say it I should probably take notes"... And sure, I had issues at first, and algae blooms and all sorts, but for the past 8-9 months my tank has just been running smoothly and been a perfect source of joy. Largely because I followed advise, made a complete plan for my tank before even setting it up, and generally erred on the side of caution. It paid off! So in short: Keep making those videos! They will make some people very happy with their results - like I am.

10:44 - Oh yes they have! ... Lol! Since I've been in & out of the hobby, I've learned that taking at least a month to set-up and run a tank before stocking is worth the patience. I'll start with a 20L and set two 16 oz. plastic cups with media & air driven lift tubes running at each end and beg some sponge squeeze into a bag when I buy the substrate (John has this cycling method in one of his vids) from the LFS. Next will be the choice & arranging of the aquascaping ( my fav part - I'm researching spiderwood this time). Depending on the fish chosen, one of the cup filters can be converted to an intake pre-filter of a hob (they're easily hidden behind rock/decor.) & the other left running or taken out (I've used them for brief activated carbon treatments, quarantine tank filter or 'seeding' another tank). They can also be 'hot rodded' with a powerhead. I got the 'Wicked Tank Tinker' syndrome at age 8. Hoping this is helpful ... cheers!

This is great info and I wish more people followed this advice... I can admit I am guilty as well. I recently set up my 75 gal bowfront and followed all the rules. I decided on angles, rummynose, yoyos, and a synodontis in a heavy planted tank. I got it all going, cycled and plants growing. Then I found out that German Blue Rams exist and they became my favorite fish. Well, they get along with everyone, but they require warmer water and my plants don't like it. Plus I set up my planted tank with dirt and sandcap covered with medium river rock...ugh GBRs like sand......Im adapting an so are the fish and plants, but I should have just set up a separate tank for the GBRs. Oh and no one has any rummynose, boo.

Seeing a new video from you guys made my day once again, thank you for all of your work! :D I have a betta girl who is going to move from 7.9 gallon to 16.9 gallon tomorrow but I am genuinely worried is my 16.9 gal over stocked since after moving my girl, there would be 1 female betta, 3 otos and 10 shrimp. This might sound like a silly question but I have never kept anything else than a 1 single betta at a time and I definitely don't want to risk over crowding my tank.
@realangiechrist3 жыл бұрын
It all depends on how much substrate you have in there to grow bacteria on. I mean it's slightly more complicated than that, but if you're testing your water and the parameters stay good, you're fine, the number of fish don't matter. What you have sounds fine, but I'd be worried the betta would go after the shrimp. Make sure they have plenty of places to hide!
@miparo60883 жыл бұрын
@@realangiechrist Thank you so much for your reply! I have planted the tank quite heavily so the shrimp have places to hide. I also chose to have rather "low grade" shrimp so they're not very bright colored. I hope it helps them to stay hidden from my betta.
@themute93543 жыл бұрын
That’s actually quite understocked! Shrimp barely at all contribute to the bioload at all, I don’t even count them when I’m figuring out my stocking level. 3 otos and 1 betta in a 16gal is perfect. You could even add more otos if you’d like.
@miparo60883 жыл бұрын
@@themute9354 Oh, thank you! I sort of feel like I'd like to have a couple of more otos since I feel like 3 doesn't quite make a shoal yet. Also they are so cute when they group up to eat together❤️ Mine seem to love zucchini😁

8:30 Good point there. In general they should have a word with a structural engineer or know their building really well. There are people, who have tons of smaller tanks in their flat. Iron-concrete blocks of flats can handle a lot. On the other hand such a case helped* to collapse at least one building (after construction workers undermined a wall). I live in Europe, so the typical building has solid ceilings, often with iron-concrete slab as the main part and sometimes the walls are also iron-concrete. If there's too much weight on it, it starts to sag, cracks start to appear... it doesn't fall straight away, but the damage is done. That means expensive repairs as the least minimum (lawsuit optional). If there is an earthquake or gas explosion... *The story (if it's true) mentions a brick block of flats in Slovakia collapsing few decades ago while a construction was being done next door. Workers undermined one wall by accident, the building collapsed. It's said in one flat a hobbyist had 3000 liters (792.5 gal) of breeding tanks on that wall. In SI it's 3 tons of water, so the overall weight could be over 4 tons just in that flat.

I would advise to start off with the largest tank possible you can fit and afford, minimum 1.2m around 200L. It will be better for your fish, if you want to change to larger fish later and any small chemical or temperature changes will be much more diluted in a big tank so the probability of afecting the fish will be much smaller.
