Hey guys, awesome video. I do would like to ask something about the impedance setting on an amp. I got a Line 6 HD 147 that has a 4, 8 and 16 ohm output setting (switch) and I always play on a 4x12 cab with 2 cables running from the amp into the cab so it's stereo. But with this stereo setting do I use the 8 ohm or 16 ohm? I hear people would even use guitar cables to connect their amp with a speaker cab, omg. I got decent speaker cables just specific for that. Anyways thanks 🤘🤘
@JensenSpeakersVideosАй бұрын
@@MadNoisy all depends on the impedance of your cab. Usually the 4x12 that allow the stereo settings can be switched to 4ohms or 16 ohms in MONO and 2x8Ohm in STEREO. If that is the case, you should use the 8Ohm settings on the amp. Check the connectors plate on your speaker, it should say what the impedance load is for each setting. Hope this helps!

Here's a question I suggest for your next interview on guitar speakers. Given that the propagation pattern of a frequency depends on the frequency level, whereby low frequencies propagate in an omni pattern from the speaker, and high frequencies are mainly directed in a beam, does that suggest that the ideal mic placement, one that captures all frequencies, both high, middle and low, emanating from the speaker, is either at or near the center of the speaker? Put differently, is there any logical or scientific basis that supports one mic placement as better at capturing the tone than others?
@JensenSpeakersVideosАй бұрын
In short... no, there is not a scientific basis to determine the "best" mic placement. The only rule is "where it sounds good to you". Since the mic is capturing a complex system, made by many chanied non-linear elements (musician, string, guitar, pickup, effects, amp, speaker in a cab), there is no point in pursuing the "most linear sound or mic placement". Moreover the mic response may be drastically different depending on distance, proximity effect, angle, capsule size, polar pattern... it's a highly subjective matter. You move it around until you find the spot that delivers the sound you like and need. Easy? Not at all, but that is what it is! However, there are a LOT of scientific data to keep in mind when you use more than one single mic to pick up a cab, as you need to make sure your mics will be in relative phase with each other. But that's a whole different story!
@patrickfouhy9102Ай бұрын
I've never been able to confirm this, but once upon a time when I worked in a guitar shop (2006-2023) I had heard that a majority of speaker manufacturers got their cones made by, or got the the paper for their cones from the same company and when this particular company went out of business that's when you started to see some real big changes in the sound of speakers. I think the change was rumored to happen sometime in the early or mid 90s. I'd be curious if anyone else has heard this before, or if it can be confirmed/denied somewhere. But it would explain a lot IMO if it were true. haha.
@johnnylayton1672Ай бұрын
Great intro to speaker design & operation from you guys THANKS! I immediately wonder about the impact & future evolution of full range frequency response speakers coupled with impulse response signal conditioning to increase similarity between recorded vs live audio from this discussion -- as IRs can tune the speaker response curve on command sans need for physical changes such as speaker magnet type & mass, cone material or recording microphone placement. I mean, is that something musicians will increasingly want or will they instead gravitate back towards the sort of personalized experiences still currently available thanks to great companies like Jensen -- i.e., akin to the human voice itself where we naturally perceive the sound of our own voices differently than what we hear from voice recordings hence begging the question that our perception of any & all sound is far more personally than collectively understood?
@JensenSpeakersVideosАй бұрын
Very interesting comment! As a matter of fact, the FRFR speakers (full range, flat response) are in essence linear devices - for how much linear a speaker system can be - meant to translate with the best possible approximation the sound of a digital system, filtered by an IR that simulates the "speaker+cab+microphone(s)" system. Thus, it should behave and playback that signal more or less lika a Studio Monitor or a PA system would, with the minimum possible coloration. Then, as we all well know, no two studio monitors or PA systems sound alike, so there are some cold hard facts to consider (linearity, dynamics, THD), but ultimately the choice of your favorite FRFR is highly subjective, just as it is when you're trying to pick your new pair of monitors for your home studio. We manufacture a multitude of speakers for Studio Monitors, as well as we make many different speakers as an OEM supplier for companies who build FRFR systems, and quite invariably those are the requirements. All these speakers either coaxia or separate two-way systems, have a "pro audio" woofer, with a thick rigid membrane and treated cloth suspensions, to grant the most linear "piston-like" excursion, and are paired with a waveguide horn loaded compression driver if the system is designed for high SPL, or with a soft dome tweeter, closer to the "HiFi" concept, if the system is designed for lower volume and maybe higher sound quality. So to say, we try to provide FRFR speaker components that have the least possible coloration, and allow the manufacturer to put them in a system that is as linear as possible, and fine tune the overall system response to their liking. Hope this answers your question!

As a speaker nerd I learnt a lot from both these talks with Ignazio! And I'm glad Jensen embraces the neodymium path. The match between some of the current Celestion neodymiums and their alnico counterparts is quite obvious, I'm looking forward to learning more about Jensens. Unfortunately rare-earth metals are expected to become more expensive, I hope it doesn't end up like alnico 😞.

As a matter of fact, Neo has been relatively stable in the past few years, after a steep increases period. You know, still Neo is small in the guitar industryl, but in our sales of Bass speakers we use more Neo than Ceramic magnets, and by far. In the Pro Audio and HiFi speakers Neo is also very important, so we just hope it will stabilize in the current price bracket and won't go crazy!

Using digital emulations as a sampler to see what you would buy if/when you want the real thing... interesting concept. I think a lot of people, young and old, still crave the real thing, the physical experience, and I think analogue will live on for quite some time to come. Digital doesn't have to be all gloom and doom for companies, as long as they innovate in both directions and stay relevant.

Great information, even for people, who not only work with high gain tone. Now I understand better, what it is, that I like so much about my Alnico Blues in my AC30. Speaking of these, that combo is a hell of a heavy beast. For more mobile situations, like e.g. rehearsal, I'm thinking of using a small amp into 1x12 cab with some kind of Neodymium speaker, that sounds relatively close to the Alnico Blues. Does anyone have any suggestions, which ones I might want to give a try?

I would love to ask a question to anyone actually knowing the real story about the Celeston Wolverine speaker. From what little I read about, it was a joint effort between Jensen and Celeston, or so I've read. Reason I was interested, is it's what came in a 1989 Marshall JCM800 4010 combo I bought years ago. I still have it, but swapped a Eminence DV-77 speaker in the amp. The Wolverine is definitely a unique sound forsure!
@JensenSpeakersVideosАй бұрын
Definitively NO joint effort between Jensen and Celestion. the WH-80 is a Celestion speaker, a custom run made for Marshall, in the late '80s. Unfortunately I have NO other information about that speaker.
Looking forward to a Kristian Kohle IR pack of this speaker!

@Sylkis89Ай бұрын
Hi Kristian! Since you're mentioning making more videos on speakers.... I'm gonna copy one comment I made in the past that you did see, but just to remind you if the idea I was trying to pitch! It's meant specifically to test speakers that are good to use with both bass and guitar, usually that means 12" bass speakers with a response curve with enough midrange and top end, or hifi speakers with a response curve that sounds good with instruments. Most of them are often referred to as replacements for EVM12L, more lightweight Neodymium alternatives with a similar sound to EVM12L. Also I wonder what would happen if someone tried using Celeston's FRLR speakers that way... but anyway: "Can you review using some specific bass speakers in guitar cabs? People online recommend Celestion BN12-300S, Eminence Basslite S2012, Eminence Deltalite II 2512, Beyma 12G40, 12" vintage CTS, and 12" Peavey Black Widow, and there's surely more I am not aware of. These often have response graphs similar to guitar speakers, but can handle the excursion and wattage needed for bass - though a graph is not enough to know what to expect irl. I’ve seen them used in setups with a modeller + poweramp + DIY cab, or for high-gain guitar and bass in home studios, or for Doom/Shoegaze. Quilter, Zilla, and Barefaced use them in guitar cabs. I think it's a cool idea to explore as an alternative to the boring V30 and/or Greenback standard. I wonder how well - from your perspective - they perform with high-gain guitar tones (possibly with a 10-band EQ in the effects loop), as well as bass tones where you mix a miced cab track with a bass cab IR track. Could you test each speaker individually and in blends, and compare closed vs. open cabs, and 2x12 vs. 4x12 configurations? Dr. Decibel from Celestion support confirmed it’s safe to use the BN12-300S this way, and I've seen people successfully use the Eminence models, not to mention vintage CTS being common in old Fender combo amps."
@KohleAudioKultАй бұрын
Hey there! The "problem" with bass speakers is that they usually sound a lot more linear (less roll-off in the highs) then a typical guitar speaker which makes them sound rather harsh for distorted guitars. On the other hand dirty bass guitar tones usually sound great through guitars speakers. As long as you get a deep clean low end from a DI track you should be fine. Here's me checking out a few 10" bass speakers: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnTVl5t8brangJIsi=NczSLcHG4iULZoW4 And here's me reamping a bass guitar through some guitar speakers: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZqZcpyOq6qFo6ssi=w3-J0zkwEUwc3jS9
@Sylkis89Ай бұрын
@@KohleAudioKultin case of the speakers I'm talking about the problem tends to actually be the opposite, they're too dark/mellow, lacking in the top end (they usually and around 4-4.5KHz so all the "brilliance" and presence suffers)... But still a lot of people swear by them! And yeah using guitar speakers for bass at louder volumes will destroy them with over excursion :(
@JensenSpeakersVideosАй бұрын
The key problem here is that a speaker designed for guitar simply does not have the excursion capacity to withstand the impact of a clean or clean-ish bass tone. The paper suspension can't handle that level of energy in the deep bass range. It will blow very fast. The EVM12L is not a Guitar Speaker by design: it's a ProAudio woofer, that happens to sound great with electric guitar. As a Pro Audio woofer, it has a thick, heavy membrane, an extra large voice coil (2,5"), enormous magnet and treated cloth suspensions that can handle very wide excursion. That's why it can playback extremely demanding signals, such as a clean bass or synth bass, kickdrums etc. A guitar speaker can though handle heavily distorted tones, and in this regard I totally agree with Kristian: split your signal, send a clean DI to the mixer and blend in as much distortion as you like through an amp/cabinet mic'ed up. That's a good way to go.
