Mr Grossmann made one for me 3 years ago and it’s great! Its not about it sounds better or worse then IRs. It’s about forging your own tone by yourself with ease and for real. And changing the speaker takes less then a minute! Great to see fatbox on your channel. It deserves more recognition than it had to this day. And check out the OAKBOX - it looks stunning! Cheers from Poland!

Thanks for this Video, Heck Yes!! Been waiting over a year to see someone with a Grossman. 100% agree with you - nothing against IRs, modeling, etc., but there is nothing quite like capturing a microphone moving air in the middle of the night while the kiddos sleep. Excited to see the upcoming speaker shootouts. In addition to any Celestion/Eminence speakers (they're great!), would love to see Jensen (tornado / electric lightning) and others, considering your uniquely great playing style and amps. Thanks again Jon, loved this one!

Great demo video! I love my Grossmann SGBox! And Stephan Grossmann is a great guy! I ordered my SGBox when he first started making them and it has been worth every penny. Stephan was kind enough to customize mine with an orange color as well as make it a four mic version (all for extra $$$ of course). I keep a R121, SM57, MD421-U5 and TLM102 in mine and it is just phenomenal sounding. I've since accumulated about 30-40 speakers and have made several speaker rings to accommodate everything from 4" tweeters to 10" speakers (a Mesa Solo Recto head sounds amazing through tiny speakers when close mic'd). I also made a bunch of the "FRESCU" cables and have all of my speakers soldered with them so that everything is quick and easy. Again it has been worth every penny and is built like a tank and sounds amazing. Totally worth the investment!

Love that you bring real speakers into the game. What a cool tool. After figuring out that the tone i was chasing, wasn't too far off what i eventually got together as improvement at first, the youtube world brought speakers to my attention. Last week i shot out four different speakers to settle on 3. A g12t-75 + greenback in a 2x12 and a cramback H for a semi open back 1x12. But the curiosity for speakers is still going. So i'm excited to checkout your shootouts, especially since your sounds are conistently good. I think i like what i've heard here today the most. for now. Could totally be bias too.

@@SonicDriveStudioThe Redback (in my opinion) really doesn’t impress until it’s cranked hard so this will be a good environment for it. The top end is a bit unpleasant at low to mid volume even after months of breaking it in hard with my Splawn. Once cranked, it smooths out nicely. I really want to get my hands on a neo creamback soon. As much as I love my scumbacks, I think the creamback could give it a run for its money. ..or for more money.

I ran the Randall ISO box for a while and it was good but I still had issues with the low frequencies. The attenuation was great, but the resonance of the low frequencies still bothered my apartment neighbors. Even though I didn't run it super loud, I had a hard time getting a quiet setup. I enjoyed using it for recording isolated speakers. I did also change it up slightly after a bit, with some extra sound deadening material inside the sealed cabinet, as well as some on the top lid.

I would love to see a video showcasing Weber speakers. I feel they are very under represented here on KZbin. Like most I tended to use cabinets loaded with celestions of some kind. I transitioned from a gigging musician to recording and music production. After almost 10 years I really missed the crative process of playing in a band. I didn't want to haul my 4x12 back and forth from my studio to rehearsal so I bought a used Avatar 4x12 that had been loaded with 75w ceramic Weber Silver Bells. I was presently surprised at the sound I was able to achieve. The amount of customization that Weber offers is ridiculous. Most speakers are offered in a variety of wattage options, ceramic or alnico magnets, and different construction methods. For such an awesome speaker company I still don't understand why they fly under the radar. I certainly didn't pay them much attention until buying that cabinet.

This seems like a great option to record amps, however, if the point of this box is to record a tube amp at high levels using both preamp and power amp tube sound, how do you go around using a higher powered tube amp - lets say 50w or 100w - into a 25w greenback? Are we back to using maxed out attenuation boxes? These can also muffle/ change the sound in undesirable ways?!

I think every guitarist goes through a couple of phases, where your gear turns more digital then back to more 'real'. Some do r once, some five times+ 😉. And some end up at 'real', some at digital, most somewhere in between. Funny to see Jon going from modelers to real amps to real cabs 😀. My eldest son sleeps 8ft away with a 5cm wall, but my youngest son sleeps on the same floor with not much more in between. Playing through speakers is out of the question at night , always headphones. Which DOES reduce my joy in playing guitar. For weekends I have a 8" frfr hooked up to an IR loader plugged into my analog rig. Just to control the volume a bit. I guess I just have to wait till im 50 and my kids make more noise at night then i do 😉

@diequietschbeus8181 yeah, a Greenback with a plexi isn't going to work but I can still use a 25w speaker with high wattage amps if I don't pound the speaker

I was wondering, are any of these IR’s or other digital signal paths, good for other genres of music, outside of drop tuning and one-finger guitar playing? I know Ola’s IRs sound great going through his cabs. But I haven’t heard anything that is a good representation of gnarly cranked amp Blues tone… or even a gnarly hard rock tone like early Van Halen.

Hey, I also got one of these. I tend to always pull out a lot of 780ish Hz (Lid on). Can you say something about your experience with this region?

The match eq boosted some mids and it cut some as well. Don't remember exactly which frequencies. Maybe you can see it in the video?

It sounds more focused and present but I don't know if it's actually improved the sound quality, possibly made worse. There's a weird reflective/hollow sound in the mids that isn't very good. Interesting video nonetheless.

You mean the EQ? Sounds great to me! I even compared the sound with the EQ vs a take with the lid off and it sounded identical

Also agree. I much prefered the non eq one. Much more natural
