If you're a new player and want to get into the game, the best structure deck released in recent memory is the Albaz Strike Structure Deck. You can find it and some recommendations here: bit.ly/3HlAIac

@ 4:30 First of all, don't grab other people's cards without asking. That's common sense and I'm sure Leoni didn't, but it should be said for the people in the back and for children. Then, simply ask "may I read that?" They say something to the effect of "sure" and you pick up the card and read it. Avoid asking players to explain the cards themselves because they might make a mistake, leave out information and details or straight up lie. It'll usually not be malicious but you shouldn't rely on your opponent to keep track of the game state in general. Some people may not want you touching their cards and that's their right. You can ask them to slide it over so you can read or ask a judge to pull up the exact text for you. Speaking of which, it wasn't mentioned in the video but there should be a judge present for an event. If there's no one else, the TO acts as judge. For ANYTHING and EVERYTHING you need, call a judge. This honestly deserves an entire video to itself. Judges are there to help you and you should never be afraid to talk to one. Most people are generally neutral to positive and just want to play a game. A community's bad demeanor gets amplified online because (a) negative stories have a much higher chance to get shared as they stick out more vividly, it's human nature, and (b) online anonymity greatly increases the BS. And if you ever have a legit unpleasant experience in an LGS, you should inform the TO or owner. I'm sure they don't want that one jerk chasing off their new customers. Also yeah, locals are the most casual, chill you can have while in a tournament with prizes. Yeah there'll be meta decks represented, of course, but also often plenty others and for most stores there's a "local meta" that you can account for (cause idk, Steve is playing Chain Burn again or something).

First locals I went to a shop with a really bad Synchron deck in Maximum Crisis format when I was in high school. Did not feel welcome at all. Next locals experience was in BACH-DIFO format taking @ignister to a different shop. Everyone was super competitive, treating everything like a business/high level competition. Did not feel welcome. Next locals experience was at a different state in early 2023 at a shop where they banned all the top decks of the most recent event. Not as competitive since my @ignister deck came in 3rd and 1st the two times I went, but the players essentially gate kept me since I was new to the area and wasn’t “in the know” yet. Also they kind of shame you if you’re not there regularly or you don’t rotate decks. Again, felt really, really unwelcome there. I cannot say I’ve had a single positive experience with paper Yugioh players

I like when I went to locals with Branded, my opponent was good with describing the card effects of their Runick Exosister deck. They said they also played Branded so was helpful with at least letting me learn the ways of the duel for my later matches since I was first round with them.

I had problems to go to locals because my friends I play since I was a little kid never wanted. One day I just thought f*ck it and drove there by myself. This was one year ago. Now I got new friends and I am there almost every weekend. We also play at home together. I am soooo happy that I did it. The community there was so great and now I am feeling like one of them. Don‘t be scared just do it! Maybe just go there with your trade binder and watch some matches and trade and talk with people. After the first time beeing there you want to play with them I promise! You share the same hobby so what can go wrong?

In my first locals I got my ass kicked so hard. I was playing relinquished (it wasn't a complete deck list I literally had one relinquished) and this dude just showed up with DAD in the first round. I ended up dropping out cuz I figured my deck could not win, and then my parents never took me to locals again. I ended up going back years later after learning to play on dueling network. Although I was playing Dark Magician with curtain and my dumbass thought that was good 😂 Edit: The deck even had double summon. Good times...

Also if you want to see a cartd that youy oponent activates just ask "can i read it?" and most people will have no issue if yiu just grab the card and read it, some people will just explain the effect and some will just grab the card themselves and put ti close to you to read it, you just need to ask and see how your oponent react, with the grave is different becaus eis supposed to be a public and at least in Mexico most people don't care if you just see tha grave without asking, but i think that i you don't know the dueslist just ask first, some time later you will know whihc people don't care and which ones you need to ask.

My first time dueling against strangers was actually a Cardmarket series in 2019. I was SO nervous to duel someone who does not belong to my dueling friends group. And then my first opponent didn't show up. 😅 I still get a little nervous before the first match, but I always had a good time and also met nice people. 😄

This feels a tiny bit more involved than showing up at a game store to play magic. With so much text on those cards and not a real clear visual difference outside a little bit of a different pose and/or name of the card, as a new player you have to read a ton to keep up with what is happening. Like your first experience, my overal encounters with magic players in stores is really positive and the few guys that played at my shop that were doing Yu-Gi-Oh were equally nice and quite inviting to outsiders. It is definitely a little bit of a different crowd, but they both have mostly good people. Thanks for this introduction. Is there anything on this channel that teaches you how to play? I went through the entire video catalogue and this was one of the few introductory pieces I could find. So far, I watched only 2 or 3 of the videos, but I barely understand what this game is and how the cards work, but I'm interested in learning. Having a bunch of positive and fun people playing though it is certainly a good way. I got an introduction to Lorcana from the MTG Cardmarket channel and it was excellent.

Yeah all the points you pointing out is a real thing. Also locals really can give you a horm feeling if all people have the same mind or if your are new. If you go to the friend zone or more in compitive side can get a little toxic. So you just have to figure out what type of player you are just ignore toxicity and have fun.

Also important for the table, just don't try find your opponent by name or find them in the room, just go and sit at the table that the list says you arte going to duel, is just faster and better that way.

I wish there was more players at my level. The very first game i played, i mistakenly said i will go second. My opponent basically played solitare for a solid 10-15min. He kept searching his deck for cards, which meant he barely shuffled. So when he was finally done with his turn. He shuffled his deck maybe three times and didn't present his deck to be cut. First time was a gimme bc i knew i was gonna loose on his next turn anyway. But after we get more and more games in, he eventually stopped presenting his deck to be cut. I was kinda paying attention to how he was shuffling, but from what i could tell, he wasn't cheating. But its the way he wasnt letting me cut that made me suspicious. I kept offering my deck to be cut, and he did every now and then. So sonce it was my first time playing with these group of people, i dunno if its just the way that they play that they don't even bother cutting. But it felt rrally scummy to me. This is just a casual game, why are you denying your deck to be cut? Why are you possibly trying to cheat against some strnager that wanted to play with people for the first time in a long time; esoecially with Yugioh being a brand new game to me? If i do go a second time, and if i do duel this guy again, I'll bring it up. I'll ask for him to shuffle some more and to let me cut his deck. Bc that's what playing with respect is. Respect for other players and resoect for the game
