See how Egyptians talk about slavery in Egypt and how their most pride centuries where build by black, asian and white slaves. I don't know as a white guy in America I don't really think anyone gave a shit maybe in like Britain or some other trash country. In fact I think there was a degree of quiet patriotic celebration of the death of a monarch, especially a European monarch. That's how I felt about it. I will say your phrasing though is interesting. I don't think white people are as homogeneous of a group as you think they are. I think most people have the same perception about other races. Kinda seems like the root of racism. But I suppose some of that is real and imposed by the system in which we live. It's odd, race on its own means nothing but because everything in society has been built on the presumption that it does mean something it becomes impossible to ignore

@lessimcdowell9897
@lessimcdowell9897 Жыл бұрын
Just to be clear, in the genealogy of morals and beyond good and evil, nietzsche presents an argument that before Christianity, no one wanted to be poor or enslaved and after christianity, being poor was the only way into heaven. It’s just elites conditioning the masses to accept their fate. In the latter book, nietzsche pleas with the reader to not accept master or slave morality but to create their own morality. This is explored a lot in thus spoke Zarathustra too. I think this is why he leaves a bad taste in many peoples mouth, they see both nazis and black panthers reading his books.

I’m not sure if I get the point of arguing about whether slavery was more egregious in one place than another. US society is still facing knock on effects of how slavery was practiced HERE. We still have people who want to deny the impact of slavery here by pointing to where and how it was practiced other places. Also arguing that the Irish or Chinese had it bad does nothing to change the fact that enslaved people had it bad. An argument like that really just amounts to “Our society has other ills to come to terms with in addition to slavery.” That argument absolves absolutely nothing.

I know that many, perhaps even most, of those who bring up the Barbary slaves or those of Caesar's Rome are doing so as a way to minimise the transatlantic slave trade, I think it is important to teach these parts of history too. Also there's the Mongol empire and countless others. Imperialism has cast a dark shadow on the history of humanity and it would be cool if we actually learned from it!

Without really knowing, I’m going to guess yes, as it was seemingly pretty standard in Pre-Christian Europe. It’s more a question of scale; they didn’t seem to have a massive organized slave trade industry.

The celts were an entire ethnic group that, at their peak ( 1st Millenium BCE) spanned from Ireland to the Balkans. Within there where hundreds of different tribes. Most celtic tribes were either genocided by the Romans or absorbed into the late Repbublic after the Gaulic Wars (1st century BCE). The visigoths were a single tribe of germanic people, originally settled in todays southern Ukraine. Like other "eastern" germanic tribes they fled the huns and crashed into the empire. These eastern germanic tribes replaced the older germanic tribes like the Marcomanns and the Suebi. So yes, technically they existed at the same time, but the Visigoths truley become a power 30p years after the Gaulic Wars. The celts, like all other ancient populations, had slaves. Both from trade and from wars with other tribes and peoples.

As someone related to the leader of the Pennsylvania Molly Maguires, I hate when the irish shit comes up. My great grandfather literally blew up the mines and was hung for it because of the Pinkertons. And now a peaceful protest is too much?? Violent revolution was intergral in things changing for irish people, so people should keep the irish out of their mouths when trying to bring down another group of people fighting to end oppression.

@@lilbilliam you're right he did, but I don't think he meant that because it's obviously not true. Sowell can manipulate things often, but I think he just misspoke since that's an obvious falsehood. I could be defending him too much though and maybe he did mean to say that. Great video though, and I agree with everything you say now that you've clarified things, but I find that some left-leaning content creators can do a very similar kind of manipulation of facts that they accuse the right of and I think that's something to be wary of. You don't do that though and I was just nitpicking unnecessarily. Sorry for that and I hope you can get more subscribers. In the 17th century, however, demand for enslaved labour rose sharply with the growth of sugar plantations in the Caribbean and tobacco plantations in the Chesapeake region in North America. The largest numbers of enslaved people were taken to the Americas during the 18th century, when, according to historians’ estimates, nearly three-fifths of the total volume of the transatlantic slave trade took place." - Brit tannica In other words, initially only a few hundred thousand slaves were taken to the Americas, the 18th century is when the majority of slaves were brought to the Americas, one of the primary regions was in Virginia.

The way I see it, even if all of the things guys like Sowell says are true, I don't think undermining what we know happened to black slaves is ever right. Barbary pirates, tribes in Africa, Dutch, whatever was happening, the fact remains that things happened to black people that were WRONG. I've made some very good friends that are black and I actually listen when they explain things. So the way I see it, even though I've done extensive research and know things about why certain areas were targeted and blah blah, I will never try to "correct" anyone who is black saying they feel a certain way about something.. because at the end of the day, I don't fully know what it's like to have that kind of history and even today have to worry about things that white people never even know is happening. So I appreciate channels like yours that have interesting facts I can dig into. This is compelling stuff and I hope that people try to understand how others are feeling before being a keyboard tough guy.

Lol, he is in fact lying anyway. Sowel isn’t an idiot, he’s a grifter. He knows that when he says “Whites were enslaved by North Africans” that will conjure up images of Americans of American slavery but with the races swapped, you know, the white races nightmare. That’s what he WANTS people to think, it’s purely emotional. What actually happened there was that for centuries, Arab, North African and even White European pirates would raid and pillage the Mediterranean. When they took captives, they sold them, largely to Arab Ottomans, and not Black Africans. Why would they, Black Africans largely enslaved other different ethnic groups of Africans, and participated in Triangular trade. So most of the Barbary pirates captives went to the Arab or Turkish Ottoman kingdoms. Which as Bill has shown, they didn’t radicalize slavery to the same degree, or practice chattel slavery. Sowell’s being vague deliberately to conjure up images of “Well actually Black peoples also imposed chattel slavery on Whites at the time, so really everyone was doing it, don’t think about to do hard”, which is a lie, a lie he most certainly doesn’t believe, and a lie he wants white people to believe and not think about how stupid it is.

The Greeks especially of the classical era (the only part I studied at UNI) way before Aristotle, to them a slave was basically anyone not allowed to vote. Slaves were wealthy bankers, physicians, they were at every level of society not just servants or being whipped in salt mines. Non Greeks were barbarians but slaves were often other Greeks. I get that Arabs were reading Aristotle but by classical Greek standards slavery is still alive today, not just the obvious use of prisoners but anyone with a wage who doesn't vote. Alexander regretted the destruction of Persepolis and was generally pretty inclusive adopting the traditions and customs of the countries he conquered he was not by any measure "genocidal".
