I’ve been told NOT to wash the FRESH eggs , rub any dirt and such off. Rub with mineral oil, let dry on wire rack, place in egg container, store in a dark , cool room or closet. Egg are still good and safe to eat at 1 yr old… This was from another Prepper that had been taught this by her grandmother that lived thru the Great Depression… Hope this helps

True as long as the eggs are clean laid. Many are poopy and very dirty. and must be washed with warm water then oiled.

Hi there. Ive used store bought eggs and I worked previously in an egg processing facility. They don't coat them in mineral oil. That's not true. They are washed and sanitized with uv lights. I don't know if your facility in your location is different but it would be a waste of time and $ to do that and than refrigerate them needlessly. I use my own chickens eggs now and use oil. There are several resources available explaining egg processing if you research it online. There are also NUMEROUS sources explaining why you can use store bought eggs as well as fresh. I do agree that room temp clean eggs should be used. Bless your heart and good luck 😚

The reason for washing & then applying the oil, rather than applying oil on top of the bloom, is there could be bacteria on the bloom that you are now locking in with the oil.

All methods of egg preservation without refrigeration is about adding an extra air barrier to the egg shells so that oxygen doesn't permeate into the egg from the outside air. Lime in water, oil, wax, waterglass in water, waterglass dried on the egg, etc. With the waterglass and lime methods, you also get some anti-microbial action too from the high pH of these. So if the outside of the egg had some bacteria or the like on it, these methods will reduce that. There are 3 enemies of food: air/oxygen, moisture, and light. When you control one or more of these factors, you can preserve food for longer. Moisture might seem like an issue with lime or waterglass in water, but not in actuality. Again, the high pH keeps down microbrial growth and the water+mineral compounds keep down the air/oxygen from permeating the shell.

it's important that the water/solution is WARMER than the egg. If you wash in cold water, it causes the egg to contract, and this pulls water and bacteria into the egg and could cause it to spoil! That may be why you were told to not wash eggs. Most of the time, no action or wiping off debris is sufficient.

You are a wealth of information! Thanks so much Bev! When ya pinch pennies to make them poop quarters like I do every little bit helps and you’ve helped me A LOT! Love ya for it too! Question....I seen a gal who preserved eggs in lye water. I forget who. Anyway...my question was this...they kept them in a HUGE container and kept adding to it as they got more eggs...so to me there’d be no way of using the older eggs first cause they’re on the bottom. Wouldn’t that kind of defeat the purpose? And you’d never really know how old the egg was you’re eating cause it’s all in one giant container? Also she did say after several months (supposedly this method can preserve up to 2 years?) they may taste a little off from the lye. Listen...I’m not knocking how they do it. AT ALL! If something works in your home by all means DO IT! I’m just wondering if you’ve heard of this, tried it, knew anyone who did? Just curious. Some channels get uptight when you ask questions and think you’re being rude when you’re just genuinely trying to LEARN! Thanks so much! God Bless ~Lisa

Preserving egg in lime water only works if they’re clean, fresh, & (IMPORTANT- UNWASHED). There are videos showing how to make the solution. Solution must cover eggs at all times. They cannot have any cracks either or it won’t work. Not even a hairline crack. But keep solution over the eggs & they’re good 1-2 years. Wash very well with water when taken out & do a water float test to be sure egg is good. Hope this helps everyone asking. I’m still learning egg preserving techniques myself which is why I am here watching this video.

I've been doing this method for about 2 years now, and it works! I found something strange today that I had never seen before. Dark green/ black moldy fungus looking spots on the inside of 2 egg shells- the shells themselves - not the yolks. The eggs were only 3 months old. The pullets had only been laying for a month at that point, but their eggshells were super solid and hard (except for one pullet who started with rubber eggs) What do you think?? My small flock is super healthy- large coop, etc . Do you know what causes this?? I eat soft boiled eggs for breakfast most mornings but now am afraid to - I don't want to crack and fry all my eggs. Would appreciate any insights you have. Thank you.

Personally, I would try to find out which hen is laying the eggs with this condition. Then isolate her from the others to see if it’s every egg or a random egg here or there. I would be soft poaching instead of soft boiling until I could figure out which hen and the cause. Better safe than sorry. Best of luck to you💛

@@jensherman2771 Thank you- all their other eggs have been fine- i have not gotten any rubber eggs in a while- they only started laying in July - but so far so good - (except for the two mold eggs- which were layed in August- I had the date on the side of the carton.

Hi, Bev! I am new to your channle! This is my first time preserving eggs, and so I have 3 questions. (1) I am getting my eggs from a friend, who is driving out of state, and they bring me back some. I don't think these eggs are stored in a fridge before I get them, and they could be up to 5 days old before I receive them. Will they still be good for storing? (2) I oiled my eggs and the oil disappeared in 15 mins. Is this because they are a few days old, or did I not put enough oil on them? (3) Other channels are saying you have to heat the oil first before rubbing it in. I didn't see you do it to yours, so is this necessary? My eggs were being kept at room temperature before I oiled them. I am using food-grade mineral oil on my eggs. I washed and air-dried my eggs at room temperature before I oiled them. Thank you SO much for this video, and I am looking forward to watching more of your videos, and your reply!

Five days old are fine if they are FRESH. The oil soaks in because the bloom hqas been washed off..the oil replaces that. The temperature of your hand should be sufficient! I hope this helps!

Store bought eggs are not 6-9 months old! By law, an egg can be sold for up to 30 days after the date it was put in the carton. And farmers have up to 30 days to go from when the egg is laid to the carton. That means those supermarket eggs can be two months old by the time you buy them.

One more question I did not think to ask before-- how do you wash your eggs? Do you just use tepid , tap water and a little bar soap? Or just rinse off without soap?
