Saw this once, in 1988, a day or two before I went off to my freshman year of college. Thank you for letting me see it again.

this version of The Dream Before is so good, and as far as I know this is this is the only place it exists

This was so great to see. I have not been able to find anything on the show for years. I would tell my wife how cool it was, but didn’t have anything to show her. THANK YOU!

There is a VHS tape that contains this show - it may be called Laurie Anderson Collected Videos.. or something along that line. I had it and the tape got stuck in my old VHS player 5 years ago. I was able to find another one on ebay - however, that tape doesn't contain the short segment of the two guys on their "road trip." Very little if any of her work has been available on DVD let alone blu-ray. Maybe that has changed, I haven't looked in the past 4 years or so.

Thank you for the great job you're doing digitizing these old "Alive From Off Center" episodes, especially this gem. I wonder: what VHS tape did you find it on? On Anderson's Collected Videos there's only a short excerpt of the clone composing The Dream Before. But the full episode is nowhere to be found except on your channel. Was it a private tape recorded directly from TV in the 80s? Or a tape from PBSs archives? Would be very interesting for me to know!

A Paul Klee painting named Angelus Novus shows an angel looking as though he is about to move away from something he is fixedly contemplating. His eyes are staring, his mouth is open, his wings are spread. This is how one pictures the angel of history. His face is turned toward the past. Where we perceive a chain of events, he sees one single catastrophe which keeps piling wreckage upon wreckage and hurls it in front of his feet. The angel would like to stay, awaken the dead, and make whole what has been smashed. But a storm is blowing from Paradise; his wings are caught in it with such violence that the angel can no longer close them. The storm irresistibly propels him into the future to which his back is turned, while the pile of debris before him grows skyward. This storm is what we call progress. - Walter Benjamin, 1940
