When trying to predict what brokerage would be most likely to fail, be careful. In the early 2000's the company I used to work for was deciding where to move their 401k plan and chose Merrill Lynch over Schwab "because Merril is the bigger and more stable company". Well, Merrill would have gone under if not bailed out by Bank of America in the 2008 financial crisis, and our company was very nervous when this happened. Large assets under management does not necessarily equate with stability.

You definitely bring up a very good point! No bank is immune to failure - that's for sure! I think it comes down to trust, or, at the very least, perceived trust. Hopefully, something like that never happens to anyone, but the longevity of the big-3 (Vanguard, Fidelity, Schwab) are good data points in the right direction. RH has had it's moments recently so I think only time will tell to see what comes out of this story!

Loved the conversation on this one guys! I’m always of the mindset that if they offer a promotion shorter than the length of time to keep that promotion (5 years in this case), it’s not worth tying up your money. They want to lock your money up without guaranteeing to service it for the reasons you joined them in the first place.
@TheCreditFrog7 ай бұрын
Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed the discussion! Yeah, I'm also definitely not in favor of tying up your money for 5 years, which doesn't seem like a long time in the grand scheme of things, but it certainly isn't great .. especially since a lot can change within Robinhood in those 5 years!
@benchoflemons3987 ай бұрын
The nice thing about the Robinhood 3% IRA transfer is if you have a Roth IRA and you transfer it over you get a 3% match deposited into your Roth IRA account which does not count towards your contribution limit and you do not pay it tax on it
@TheCreditFrog7 ай бұрын
Yup! That is a nice benefit, and certainly can be very valuable if you have an IRA with a lot of assets! It depends on how comfortable you are with Robinhood and investing with them long-term!

Great video with Anthony. Totally agreed with all your points - no one wants to lock up their money for 5 years. People keep saying the effective annual fee is $0 (minus subscription), but I don’t want to not have the flexibility to take my money out when I want to.

I agree. 5 years doesn't seem like a long time when it comes to saving for retirement but having that flexibility can be pretty important depending on your specific circumstances. Appreciate it!

Counterpoint, the 3% Ira match alone on my transfer paid for rh gold for a decade. Every year, it’s also >$200 in match. Gold is worth it for me by itself. I’m not retiring in 5 years and can purchase the etfs I like. There is no downside for me

@@TheCreditFrog Informative and interesting discussion, thanks for that. However, I must agree with @danielle that the way you repeatedly phrased "restrict access to your money" came across as much more than what it actually was. You still hads full access to your money, but for a short period people could not buy or sell Gamestop; that is a significant distinction that I feel was lost in the way it was described in the video. "Restrict access to your money" comes across as a much bigger situation than "Gamestop trading was temporarily suspended".

One correction is that the monthly fee is $5 per month, but if you change your membership fee to annual instead of monthly, then the fee becomes $50 per year, and not $60 per year as you state in your video. I subscribed to the annual fee and they gave me 1 month free and my annual fee is $50 due at the end of April. Also, you omitted a nice feature to the Gold membership which starts in May and that is the 1% deposit match. If you just keep $1,000 in your account you make up the $50 annual fee and you get everything else for free. 5% is pretty good for liquid money, and most financial institutions don't even pay you that much for a CD. Until they drastically reduce the interest rate, I am not sure I agree with your statement that you need to "do so much" with Robinhood to make the card worth it.
@TheCreditFrog7 ай бұрын
Yes, thank you for pointing that out! I definitely should have included the discount if you pay yearly as well as the first month free. I think Tony covered that 1% deposit match towards the end of the video, but I certainly should have included it earlier. While I think 5% is a great APY, I'm not sure if it will exist like that for the rest of this year (and early next year). Interest rates are projected to be lowered, and when that happens, expect subsequent decreases to APYs for savings across the board. I'm not saying you need to do "so much" necessarily, my point is more that you have to keep your money within Robinhood for at least 5 years for the 3% IRA match, and then you also get benefits from cash in your account as you said, as well as the 3% on the RH Gold card. All of this is great news for those who want to put their money with RH!! But if you're wary about them like I am, I'd rather see what happens in the next 12-18 months to see if there is any longevity to these benefits as I think moving all your assets and financial plan to Robinhood may not be the best move at this point.
@gsctrading72157 ай бұрын
@@TheCreditFrog Agreed on the expectations that rates are going lower medium to long term and that it is probably prudent to take a wait and see approach in case they reduce some benefits. 3% sounds great, but needing to pay $60 of RH gold or tieing $1200 to offset the cost, isn't worth it for me. Especially when there's cards like citi double cash that gives 2% essentially. I was going to do if for the 3% match but then I wondered how sustainable is it for them to offer that for many years. And it it only last a year or 2, it wouldn't be worth it to me to have that ira there for 5 years. I'll stick with My fidelity and Schwab for my investing accounts.
@TheCreditFrog7 ай бұрын
For sure! There are plenty of other 2% cash back no annual fee credit cards to choose from, and 3% sounds good for now, but we'd have to see how long that benefit lasts.
