Did you know that ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental conditions, affecting millions worldwide? Despite growing awareness, many misconceptions and lesser-known facts about ADHD continue to shape how we understand, diagnose, and manage it.
In this video, we dive deep into ADHD to uncover the overlooked aspects, from its persistence into adulthood to the gender differences in diagnosis, and even the positive traits often associated with it. Our goal is to challenge misconceptions, promote understanding, and provide valuable insights into this complex condition.
What You’ll Learn in This Video:
🌟 ADHD isn’t just a childhood disorder-it often continues into adulthood.
🌟 Gender biases in diagnosis mean many girls and women are underdiagnosed.
🌟 ADHD impacts more than attention, affecting executive functions, emotional regulation, and daily life.
🌟 The role of genetics and neurobiology in ADHD development.
🌟 How ADHD overlaps with other conditions, complicating diagnosis.
🌟 Positive traits of ADHD, like creativity, resilience, and adaptability.
Why It Matters:
By fostering a more nuanced understanding of ADHD, we can break the stigma, support those affected, and celebrate their unique strengths. Whether you’re navigating ADHD yourself or trying to support a loved one, this video offers practical insights to help.

Something cool to think about is that, it isn’t a “ADHD pandemic” except that just now, we are truly studying and understanding about it, it shows how much we still have to learn about ourselves and how complex and yet unique we are :)

I've been considering getting diagnosed for years now. As a woman with an excruciating amount of ADHD symptoms it's been a hard battle against all the pre-existing stereotypes around the disorder. I was told by my parents I couldn't possibly have the disorder because I did well in school, even though I was a chronic procrastinator and relied heavily on late work acceptance. It's really wrecked my confidence in myself to identify issues in my life, thank you for spreading awareness and reminding me to keep fighting for myself and my health

Yeah, the lack of support or attention one of trust could give you only deepens the problem and could even lead to others, makes you think, maybe it could be better if they just said something like “if you say so, let’s get it checked” (I don’t know your parents I’m just saying it out of what you wrote down)

I was one of the lucky few girls in the 90s who was diagnosed. My mother, who paid attention to what the doctors told her-- refused to put me on medication. She saw what happened to all the kids who were on medication during that time and didn't want me to join them. So she shredded all of the paperwork and instead worked tooth and nail to help me become productive. I still have trouble with things but I have never felt like I needed to be treated differently. I can do everything everyone else does, I just need to take a slightly different approach. It has actually been a benefit in a lot of aspects of my career choice because not everyone can be happy for hours on end and willing to help everyone for hours on end. Patience is oddly a super skill when I'm literally able to entertain myself with just helping someone and thinking of everything I could do. :) I guess my point is, I don't see why we should feel bad for not thinking the same as everyone else

I would definitely argue ADHD causes comorbidities like depression and anxiety, at least for me. Knowing I'm only a fraction of the person I should/want be because my brain is simply wired differently has nearly caused me to do serious self-harm in the past. Medication has been life changing. Edit: Context, I'm doing alright currently

My mom and I are the only ones in my immediate family that have ADHD and both of ours are very severe apparently. My mom had a really rough time as an ADHD girl when she was little so she helps me with mine! Thank you so much, Psych2Go for your videos! That first fact really got to me, I don't have ADHD and figured out what my symptoms were from something else a while ago but before that I was almost 100 percent sure I had ADHD, however when I went to talk about it to a doctor they said if I didn't have 2 symptoms since 12 I don't have it, yet I was experiencing these symptoms in my early 13th year... (And I got seen at 15) So I felt very unheard... And for 4 more years I struggled with these symptoms, forcing myself to say I don't have ADHD, after finally finding confidence in myself to say "yes there is something wrong!" I went back to the doctor and I finally know what was wrong and it wasn't ADHD, but still feeling unheard or like your story isn't valid because of your age is so soooo sad and annoying and made me go another 4 years in confusion thinking nothing was wrong and that I was just weird for not knowing how to handle my symptoms. (No one asked I know but it ended up being hyperacusis which was flaring up because of high anxiety lol, Psyc2go really really helped me with a lot of their coping videos and I love this channel!!!) ❤❤❤

I was diagnosed with Adhd when i was 8 now im 16 and it got weaker ye older i got. With 15 i already didnt need any medication anymore, my symptomps were hyperactivity with a little touch of impulsivity, just a little touch. How it affected me? I have more energy so i can wake pretty good up in the morning and one of the biggest things... i just find some things and a specific type of humor very funny, i can laugh easier than others and feel easier pretty happy. Learning is not a big Problem anymore, a tip from my side for learning is, set a timer to 20-15 minutes of learning and then have 5 min of free time, after that start the 15-20 min timer again, do this till you are finished😊. In my Opinion, if i would not have ADHD my live would be pretty boring, i hope the most of you can relate, AND REMEMBRE, YOU 🫵 ARE NOT ALONE. Greetings from Germany :)

Okay, here's how this resonates with me. 1. I'm really bad at time management and I often fail doing my assignments. 2. No, I was really in low mood feeling so depressed and hated myself but now it's getting better. Somehow, when I get so anxious. I was given a mood stabilizer and an anti-psychotic too. 3. Is it really dependent on gender? I mean, there're already 7 genders but somehow, there's a single teacher who actually emotionally abused me claimed that I've hyperactivity but except for that the truth is I really wasn't but inattentiveness is extreme which could be a result of Anxiety or Depression too which necessarily doesn't indicate anything specific to ADHD even though it can be a part of ADHD. Wrong? Then explain why, I really wanna know. 4. I'm impulsive but not aggressive. I mean, this wasn't actually happened in the climax of my anxiety(diagnosed with OCD.), emotional dysregulation, hell yeah! I've that in a considerable degree and I appear weird. 5. I've faced significant atrocities for not being punctual. I mean it can range from 10 - 50 minutes somehow, I almost always faced those. When going to school, it's by 1-5 minutes usually which is relatively closer than the university but I was punished for that too. I fail to come to the assembly on time and when I was small, I was usually punished with corporal punishment. Somehow, faced bullying where any action wasn't taken against that. 6. 7. I get medications included for attention but I avoid typing it as KZbin flags, it's none of these, something different but somehow, I'm not under therapy and I don't feel bad about it because they're not addressing my actual issues related to self-harm and everything. In fact, 2 out of 3 made me uncomfortable and angrier and the other one always attributed my talents to one of the previous diagnosis named ASD. 8. Really? Creative but ...... 9. Normally, there're many people who's angry getting chances of any kind. I mean, especially me.

I don't know if there are studies about it but adhd can start later in life as well. I am in my early 50s, never had issues as a child or teen, but this past decade or so, it has changed. I thought it was just perimenopause symptoms, but no: adhd 🤷🏻‍♀️

20 year old male. I got tested a bit ago and they came back as on the line, but normal, but the symptoms have worsened since. My GP still gave me a diagnosis later on due to the severity of my worsening symptoms but for some reason I just can't accept if I have it. Despite all these symptoms describing me to a tee I just refuse to believe it's adhd for some reason. I could swear this is all just normal. The medications don't work the way people say they're supposed to so that also just deepens my odd belief that I just don't have it. along with the previous negative test result. Idk what that's all about.

"Executive function deficit" gets a quick pass at around the three minute mark or so. I don't think those words mean much to many people when put together in that way and I feel it's also one of the biggest, if not the biggest cause of problems for people with ADHD. I think it would have been better to slow down at around that point for a slightly deeper explanation.

Getting good grades has nothing to do with having or not having ADHD, and if you're told you don't seem to be struggling it's because those around you don't want to see it. Keep pushing for evaluation. Even if it seems like nobody is listening, keep advocating for yourself. Your struggles are real and you deserve support regardless of official diagnoses.

Im AFAB non-binary, and i was diagnosed with ADHD back in the 90’s when i was 8 or 9 years old. I did take Ritalin for a year but it did absolutely nothing for me. And it definitely got worse as I got older. Im a few days away from turning 40, and my ADHD is a trash can in hell. It makes doing responsibilities difficult and keeping friendships impossible.

ADHD often co-occurs with autism too but it seems that autism is too scary for the general public to be mentioned. Here is what you can easily find on any research: "Research suggests that 50 to 70% of people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) also have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Conversely, 20 to 50% of children with ADHD also meet the criteria for autism."

I also have ADHD but my parents don't understand,if I try to cook something for the family she eats it deliciously but later on if she is in a bad mood she blames me for everything because I am the oldest sister and if I say didn't you like the food she says I only said it was good cause there were people around I am never appreciated or loved just now I was crying because I was studying but my baby brother cried because he didn't see me so I went to calm him down but my mom was in a bad mood so she beat me and pulled my hair so hard that my hair fell out O hate being around she even cut my finger tip and put pepper in it once just so I remember to always do what she wants I am trying not to cry but once when I was 7 she beat me with a slipper so I even ran away from her

ADHD does overall suck, especially when trying to enter a carreer field like Engineering. while the field itself is fine, it's the process of getting there, especially college.

No. It is not 60% of people who had it as a child who experience adhd as an adult. It's 100%. It's just that the ADHD symptoms become masked, because others mistake them for childishness, laziness, poor work ethic, or lack of moral character. And so Adults with ADHD will self report that they have outgrown the problems of their childhood, when really, the symptoms persist or worsen, but their strategies for coping (which may be healthy or unhealthy) have become a part of their psyche. Nobody ever stops having ADHD. They are just shamed into hiding their symptoms, sometimes so deeply that they fool themselves. ADHD is a neurotype, and it is genetic. You cannot prevent a child from having it by how you raise them, and you cannot cure it with medication. The only true path forward is to recognize how one third of the populations nervous system is motivated by different factors than the rest, and for society and culture to accept that these neurological differences are not a choice, and that they imbue the person with both cognitive benefits and cognitive defects. Treating ADHD with medication is more or less giving people chemicals that make their brain work more like a neurotypical brain so that they can function within the framework of society which is set up for people who find calculus hard but find stocking a pantry easy, that find painting their house hard but find vacuuming easy. That find challenging things hard and boring things easy. But when you have ADHD, challenging things are easy and simple things are impossible, because you do not experience the flow of time and your working memory only has 1 byte of storage. When you see a second chore that has to be done while doing a 1st chore, you will either forget you are doing the first chore and leave the trash bag in the middle of the room, or you will ignore the 2nd chore and forget to come back to it. Your best day with ADHD is when you find a problem so interesting that nothing distracts you from it. Not even the need to use the toilet. Because those are the days you do great things that earn the admiration of others.

Update over my mentality: I found out that I have Catatonic Schizophrenia thanks to Psych, I am now totally positive because I didn't fight with anyone even though they broke my something. This series of comments is now gonna be about my personal life and recovery from Catatonia/Catatonic Schizophrenia. About school, I got a little freaky, grabbing other girls' arms(not with friendly intent), trying to take Update over my mentality: I found out that I have Catatonic Schizophrenia thanks to Psych, I am now totally positive because I didn't fight with anyone even though they broke my something. This series of comments is now gonna be about my personal life and recovery from Catatonia/Catatonic Schizophrenia. About school, I got a little freaky, grabbing other girls' arms(not with friendly intent), trying to take from other girls, etc. I actually grabbed the girl's arm who I took as my own sister for quite some time without realizing. When she said "get your hand off me" I then realized that I am holding her arm. I also started protecting her a little. I actually cursed myself for being such a creep even though I know that she didn't thick of it like I wanted her romantically. I don't say that I don't have depression because I still curse myself of guilt I am not responsible for. I am still quite positive right now because I overcame my anger issues. I don't wanna talk about my dreams because I don't get them anymore. I have a controversial thing to share... You psychologists remember the time I had a dream in which I was in McDonald's ordering a Bottle Of Prime and a Big Mac? If yes, you might be wondering why in the world did I order a Bottle Of Prime? Now here is where the controversial thing is. Some time before sleeping I had listened to KSI's song 'Thick Of It' and complimented it in every way possible (not just to stop the controversy but also cause I liked the song). This might lead to a controversy of people saying that I have a very bad taste in music but I like what I like and nobody can change my mind. I don't care whatever society says because I have a personal opinion. Also I feel Iike I have both Catatonia and ADHD. Anyways that's pretty much it. If you read all that congratulations. Here is a cookie🍪
