As a forty year Carpenter Foreman , the single most important thing we look for from an apprentice is not what brand of tools you carry. We don't even care if you don't have all the tools. Number one is showing up every day and on time. Number two is attitude and willingness to be a part of a team. We will teach you how to do tasks safely and provide all safety equipment. We don't tolerate people who are always late, can't find a baby sitter, have to go to court all the time, and just plain lazy. we will lay you off in a heart beat.

I’m so glad I found your KZbin channel. I’ve watched a couple videos now after I thought well in what grade I wanted to start. I was between carpentry and one other trade but I’m leaning more to carpentry. I’m currently completing my osha 10 card and it’s the first time I’ve ever looked at getting into a trade. The union in all sounds like the union I work for in the culinary for my day job. But I’m 20 years old and I don’t know where to start after I complete my osha course. I am already thinking about going to job sites after I complete my class to gain knowledge from other on how they started. And I’ve also got an apprenticeship program I’ve called that told me to bring certain documents and apply for apprenticeship and they will reach out to companies. Maybe I’m thinking too hard about it haha

I would suggest you join a trade school so its free like i did. More specifically jobcorps! I joined when i was 17 and got my ged, license, and certs in carpentry all for free. The only thing is the most of the people there is immature but if you focus you got it. I went edison jobcorps in nj and they dont only teach you carpentry they teach discipline. Bro im literally at rock bottom with a pregnant gf and ive been applying for jobs everyday for a month and going to interviews getting turned down. I've considered plumbing or electrician or hvac but those are super high stress and a major toll on the body but this trade seems much more viable for me atp. As someone in the carpenters union and works with the other trades if that’s your concern carpentry by far has more toll on the body then those other trades and just as much high stress and pressure if not more just don’t want you jumping in and feeling bamboozled

Retirement is 65 for full benefit, you can go early starting at 55 but at 55 you only get 60% of your full payment each month and the payment increases in intervals each year until you get to the full amount at 65. Shout out from local 423 in Pennsylvania.

Carpenter makes great money. Their are a ton of trades that make less. If you're in the union, you can work in different states. You just have to switch your book over. So you get all your benefits. Ask whatever questions you want. I'm here to help.

The more skills and experience you gain the higher you can go. Foreman, to general foreman, to superintendent. Maybe even starting your own company. The key is learning as much as you can. Show up everyday and give your best effort. I hope that helps.

The most stressful part for me. Is working with new material under a tight schedule. The key is to be honest and transparent. It's better to get lined out properly. Then waste a hour trying to figure it out yourself. The best part is seeing the finished product. Knowing you had a part of creating something. That feels really good. When you cut a piece of material and it fits perfect is really good feeling too.

We work at least 8 hours a day. Sometimes more. We work in the rain all the time. In fact I work in the rain most of the year. We only get paid when we work. But the pay is pretty good, so it all balances out.

When you get all your classes and hours done. You graduate to journeyman in Oregon. No test. But I've heard some states do it differently.

I'm not sure. But I believe $17.70 will be your pay. And you will pay dues from that. Most likely $50 a week. The benefits should be something separate.

First, our pay usually goes up every year. The journeyman wage is just the floor. Their are chances to become a foreman or superintendent. Also, if you're really skilled, you can negotiate a higher pay.

Would you say going to college is pointless if you want to go into carpentry? If so going out of highschool where should I start

I mean, if you're trying to get into upper management, it makes sense. You can also attend college while you're doing your apprenticeship. In oregon, you get the majority credits required for an associates degree. Plus, if you attend class while you are in an apprenticeship, it's less likely you will have to take out a ton of student loans.

im not sure about this program. i completed a 4-year apprenticeship. 1st term apprentices make $27 an hour in Oregon. it all depends on what making money means to you.

@@unscriptedwithantonio he’s in New York City and his program is 7 months. The average rent in New York is $27k a year so for him to live comfortably he would need to start of with at least 55-65K

2 classes every 6 months. 4 ten hour days.

Just a thought, Union workers get paid by hour, so back in the day her and nails takes x amount of time making all there earned money... Now days doing 3x5x amount of work same money... Sir tools easier, faster SAFER , ergonomics! Think about all the money your not making over all... Now if paid per job beginning to end for same amount that you'd make by hand. In fraction of time then it's a win... Now out smarted under paid...so go faster faster equals less money in your pocket. Hey go on unemployment instead of working all year around and worrying. Therefore completing jobs faster.doing more work completed for same pay not More pay equalivant to amount of work completed. 30 days of work hammer 🔨 nails 15- 20 air guns... No extra money, incentive. 10-15 less days of work not getting paid for... unemployment we go Example

I would pick carpentry personally because you have more variety. And more applicable skills outside your job. I don't mind getting dirty. But welding is filthy work.
