If there a good company. Do they still exist……..when the money runs the schedule and the slackers get paid honest quality workers are just caught in the middle. Construction has became unbearable after 25 years. So done and tired of being thrown under the bus. Good luck the real leaders and men and quality have done gone. Shit from above shit from below equals a bunch of shit. Send my check……

I did bridge work and sewer work, and I can’t lie I really hated my life during that time. I was risking my life and sanity for what is considered good money but I say it’s bs. I spent a fraction of my check on gas which made it worse. It’s good work and I love getting down and dirty, swinging a hammer but man the pay to risk wasn’t adding up.

9 years wood framing in the union. Laid off and framing non union 2 weeks. Got bitched at for using a plate level. Watched them level 8’ walls with a 4’ level on a bowed stud. Every wall. Building grew an inch on the 2nd floor. Getting bitched at for taking 2 extra minutes to do something right really breaks morale

There is dozens of cons, i could ramble for paragraphs endlessly. If you can build a house, pack up everything and build in the wilderness before you are 35 years old. You will not regtet it, trust me. After 30 years as a carpenter, the horrible stories only get worse as you age...

This July 1st 2024 the journeyman wage will go up to $45.56 as a general carpenter. There’s different agreements down here for the different types of carpentry work.. sucks I know but I guess this local fell apart bad some years back and they are working on getting it back together. The scale goes up for a bridge worker/pile driver, then goes down for a framer/ hanger, acoustic ceiling, scaffold, then as an insulator you get paid the least.

Gc here but alot of the principles apply. When looking for help I like when you have skills but it's not nessary. If I have to hear I've done it this way for 100 years that's a good way to being exiled. If your willing to learn, show up on time and pay attention then that's all I ask. I have worked with a few mid 30 and 40s handy capable people adhd/physical disabilities there some of the best when they focus. Skills can be taught being bearable to work with can't. I like your segment on safety I carry a big magnum sharpie red colored and when I see something unsafe I mark people's hands fingers ect. Workman's comp claim is far more expensive and disruptive than stop and thinking about what your doing. I tell clients it takes what it takes for a reason if I got a crew of very ichy neck folks I'll be out of business fast on the back end. So yea if someone that's semi retired 50s 60s wants a shot there age isn't nessary a factor unless there short we need more small people. My current crew is all 6f4in plus and we can't fit into places we're like trees.

I like the organization on the cart. I do have a few upgrade/suggestions to maybe help you out. I had husky carts like you I suggest rubbermaid adaptive height small cart or southwire 2 shelf 17in utilty cart. The extended handle holds drinks paper towel holder and I use the compartments to organize. I like and suggest the moderately priced packout magnetic tray since it's mostly plastic and comes clean/dosent scrach up finished hinge screws like chrome. I'm surprised you don't use tajima chalk lines or caulk guns? At least a high end newborn. If your doing miles of caulking I either use a m12/ryobi or my metal tajima caulk gun. Anything you do alot of get a comfortable tool. I don't get provided power tools I have to provide them so I buy what I would actually use not cheap crap. Check out thoes utility carts I think you'll really like them and even I put 4 to 6in offroad casters on them for outdoor work. Time is money and 200 in cart/tools is easly 3x that in billable time.

Another thing since it seems like you use that osslating tool so much is ezarc extra long osslating tool blades on az. Have you ever gone behind siding but needed the blade to be 2x the reach of standard blades? Bingo that's what they do I can catch a nail behind 8in hardie plank or cedar shake for repair aka surgery.

You'd be surprised the red tape that goes on in Portland/oregon area. I'm a general contractor and we have to have permits for things like he does replacing banisters if it's more than 50% of them. Something the newer carpenters need to take note of is how clean your tools are. Even your spatulas were still pretty shiny. Well maintained tools are going to last you longer.

@unscriptedwithantonio 20 күн бұрын
They are my tools, so I try to maintain them. When someone else buys them. They usually don't get treated with the same respect. It's like being a homeowner vs. renter. Some will respect things that aren't theirs, but most won't.

Clean and organized is key I carry a can of huduni lock lube in my bad and on my carts so I never have rusty tools. It cleans well smells good and makes all the plastics look like new. It also isn't conducting so it can br sprayed on osslating tool blades and power tools (even inside the motor safe). It's a habit that keeps me from spending more and from having to scrape things clean wasting time.

I've only watched a couple of your videos including this one but you've already given me a good amount of information about what to expect from this line of work. I just turned 57 and have grown tired of the office and desk scene and have always been curious about learning carpentry. So I looked at my local technical college and found the courses affordable enough. What was holding me back was the concern that I may find it just as difficult finding work (due to age or lack of experience) as in my line of experience (IT/technical writing). But your explanations have given me useful information that make me realize I probably shouldn't go down this path at my age. I don't need to fall or injure myself in any kind of life-altering manner just to try and earn a buck. Thank you for your videos and wish you all the best! 🤜🤛

At 39 with some guys I work with been doing a lot longer than me.
