This reminds me of how the knicks use to play when I was a kid. They were gritty and played with heart just like this. I'm a Raptors fan but I remember

Great video. One thing you missed is that they focus on taking away corner threes. Thibs really emphasized taking away corner threes in the preseason, for instance in the Raptors example, they would rather have Baynes take an open three on the wing, than Lowry take a corner three.

they focus on taking away the rim which they are top five in and also fast break threes

Thanks. I haven't had the chance to watch much the Nicks so I was curious about their defense.

Is this the next evolution of defense in the NBA, next to switching/preventing high value shots? Using bigs with length and early rotation to cover shots everywhere decently?

@Rusan Öner It's not even about great shooters. Good play makers would mostly exploit the paint. I mean, there are examples in this video where offense fails not because the Knicks defend that good, but because the player with the ball can't recognize or execute the right play. At around 8:20, in my opinion it's not so much the Nicks verticality which prevents the lob, rather it's Mitchell's failure to feed Gobert at the right time. It would be bread and butter for a better play maker. At 5:50, it takes a Melo to miss the open man in the post. With almost anyone else there, this could be an easy assist. But as Mr. Fundamental also says, we have to take into account the relative inexperience of the Nicks into account. More experienced defenders could rotate better, thus eliminating part of these opportunities for their opponents or at least making them harder.

It does seem like it, since a lot of team have started doing this more or less. One way to see it is that their getting the ball out of the best players hands. Like others have replied to the comment, great passers like LBJ, Luka and Harden could punish this with their passing but their teammates have to be able to make plays or knock down shots. The Mavs shifted to more defensive players this year but lost that shooting. The Nets have to choose between a great shooter in Joe Harris or defenders (inconsistent shooting) like Green or Brown to make up for their weakness. What I'm trying to say is that great passers and exploit this, but it's dependent on lesser players making plays. Also, stars have a mentality to take over if their team is down. This early rotation could force them into over-dribbling and this happens to Harden a lot in the Nets half court offense.

So they don't ice pick and rolls, they are playing some sort of drop coverage and man to man defense while mixing zone to it.

That was kinda a triangle and two defense.. It's not too popular that's why you don't know.. But thibodeau philosophy was defend the paint rather than the arc.. So basically.. The three players in top play a trap against pick and roll.. The one in weak, faking defend the corner and suddenly go in the paint.. The other one defend the wing and the corner that leaves by other defender.. Or drop to in the dunking spot.
