What You Need to Know About Vaccines for US Diversity Visa (DV) in 2024

Every year, the US Department of State issues 55,000 diversity visas to individuals from around the world that participate in the annual US diversity visa lottery commonly known as the #greencard lottery. These visas enable foreign nationals to migrate legally to the USA as "Lawful Permanent Residents." But prior to immigrating to the United States, prospective migrants have to undergo vaccination and medical screening at the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Medical Assessment Center in their respective countries, in line with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines. In this video, I discuss the vaccinations that adult applicants and / or adult derivatives are required to take prior to their visa interview at their designated US embassy. This presentation is based on my own personal experience as a green card lottery winner. Please note that I am not a medical doctor or legal migration expert. Hi, Thanks for watching! Yes, they will do a chest X-ray on you to check for tuberculosis. They may also carry out blood work or other tests to check for Syphilis. Depending on your age.

Hello Dr Munyoka, For Hepatitis B, do i have to take also Hepatitis A for it to be considered full dose? Also, Like you mentioned, Hepatitis B is given in phases, what will happen IOM having not received the complete dose, will they reschedule you for the second and third short?

Adults require Hepatitis B only. There is no need to take A. If you go to IOM before completing your regiment, they won't give you an injection unless it's due. No rescheduling will be done because you'll be heading to the embassy for your interview after that. It is assumed that you will complete the dose when the time comes.

Yes, you should take them before your IOM visit. It will make life a lot easier for you. Take Covid19 and influenza shots at least two weeks before your medical visit.

Hi, I cannot give you exact estimates because it depends on which country you are and what vaccines you take. It cost me about $300 for the vax and IOM medical examination.

It is not mandatory to do vaccination prior to going to IOM. You can do this at IOM. But remember you'll be there only for a day. Do you want to undergo several vaccinations in one day?

Yes, you can get these vaccinations at IOM. But your appointment will be for only one day. Do you want to take all the vaccines in one day? You're better off getting vaccinated before going. It's also cheaper.
