New hobby welder here. I started out on 13 and couldn’t see a thing. Turned it down to 9, huge difference. I typically don’t run over 120A and I’m not doing this for a living. The OSHA minimum is 8 while 10 is recommended.

Great video. The booklet that is with a new Victor torch gives warning. The torch flame produces infrared and ultraviolet rays just like the sun, no doubt on a little lower level. But these RAYS on the "Light Level Spectrum" can cook your eyes just like a microwave oven warming up lunch. The micro wave oven has a built in protection screen on it.

It's blinking because the battery needs replacing. If they convinced you that it's solar powered and has no battery; they're lying, open up the screen assembly, replace the battery. Requires soldering, they usually solder the battery in place. They expect you to replace the entire screen every few years. I converted mine to run on AAA batteries, and i also added a switch to keep the batteries from draining while the thing was not being used.
@TaylorWelding2 жыл бұрын
Maybe so. It doesn't do that while I'm welding

I just rock a gold shade 10 lens in the old metal Fibre hood. Auto darkening is cool but I can still see abs start my welds pretty good as long as I have decent lighting. If I don’t I just use a flashlight lol

Cool. I plan on doing a rig tour. As a matter fact I’ve had my vacuum cleaner in my truck all week. For my helper to start cleaning it up. It’s so nasty that you could grow potatoes on the dash. Once I get it straightened up a little bit. I’m going to do a rig tour

Good video. I tried cheaters but they didn't work for me. They were crystal clear, but when I'd reposition my head, certain angles I'd get blurred vision. Bought a pair of reader safety goggles, hit the spot.

Love em both. Use a auto darken speedglas and a fixed shade Jackson. Use an 11 shade because when I’m doing carbon arc it’s dark enough but light enough for welding so I can still see my surroundings while welding (surroundings meaning 1-2” surrounding the weld puddle). I do find 10 is too bright for my blue eyes unless I’m doing some sheet metal welding.
@TaylorWelding2 жыл бұрын
Nice Don’t know what a carbon arc is.
@JRP0262 жыл бұрын
@@TaylorWelding carbon arc gouging, uses a stick electrode type holder that has the ability to shoot compressed air through it. Lights up like a stick rod but gouges metal like a plasma. Uses a carbon based rod. Uses anywhere from 100-400 amps depending upon the size of your carbon rod.

Good video, although I use the Miller digital elite auto darkening shield. One of the reason's I like it, is because it has a large viewing area, helps me to see better. Suggestion on a video I'd like to see is, one on filling holes and gaps on thin material with stick. I can do it with mig, but stick gives me problems. Thx
@TaylorWelding2 жыл бұрын
It’s tough with a stick. Anything with thin metal really. Mig will be the way to go. But I’m not sure what to say about it in a video. Turn it down, Get a small electrode, use a rod for filler metal. Not sure I’ll think about it thanks for the idea

Greetings from Russia, want to share some thoughts about welding hoods. It's very rare that professional welder here in Russia uses auto darkening hood, common belief is that they will 100% affect your vision in the long run, maybe except the most expensive ones like 3m speedglas etc... I am really curious whether all that auto darkening lenses which are sold on eBay are safe for eyes - all that ameriarcs, singles 240 hd, Lincoln 4c etc

I have zero eye troubles and I've been using singles 240, and all of the other cheap ones for more than 20 years. From what I have found. Your eyes will let you know if your hood lens is bad

The reason inspectors freak out about arc strikes outside the weld zone is because it creates hairline fractures on the pipe which technically affects the integrity of the pipe. Inspectors don’t like that obviously

Hey bud excellent videos you're putting out. Very helpful. Do you prefer glass or "plastic" cover lenses? Funny story regarding cheaters, I like collecting antique welding stuff and bought an old school cheater lens with a really nice case. On the case, it broke down what cheater you needed based on your age! And actually kinda accurate, I use one for tig now, but with stick usually my head's too far away.

i've found with my cheaper miller lens that if both light sensors aren't seeing the light like if your hand or another object blocks one of them, the auto dark shuts off and you're staring at the light of god, threw mine away

it's blinking because the sensor is picking up the infared on the camera or other sensors, happens to all auto lens' with cameras in direct shot.
