Went up to ND with my son, both of us were hired within 3 days, by the same company. This video was spot on. Spent 5 yrs up there. The people I worked with never did 72 hr weeks. 94 hours was a bad week for us. We averaged around 110 hrs and loved every minute of it. My company allowed me to work continuously without taking time off. They only required that i take 1 day off for every 30 days working. A lot if times they would forget and i never told them. I worked 1 whole year with no days off. At the end of the year, they made me take 7 days off. Worked with a great bunch of guys and we still stay in touch. 3 of my friends are still in the oilfields to this day. I spent most nights in oil fields and wondered sometimes if I could do it. Wouldn't trade this experience for anything. Loved ths oilfields. It's a brotherhood.

This is my input as a rookie trucker in the NM TX oil fields. I came in here with a plan to save money. Money is the priority. Theirs 3 goals i have to achieve. Goals are (1 save up enough to buy a piece of land, i should have the cash by july) (2 give my mom 6 months worth of my money after i buy the land) (3. Would leave me at 2 years 3 months left and im gone to build my cob house south of the border) 1. I dont rent i sleep in the sleeper of the semi. 1230 days to go and im gone. 2. I will not have any relationship with another girl that requires me to spend money on her. And even if it meant having a future together. I work too much anyways and wouldnt be fair for another. 3. I hate it, but its a sacrifice worth doing for 1230 days left. I miss friends and family but this is serious money. 4. I drive a 97 4runner 4x4 (cost was 3,000 and i aint upgrading cause shes been good to me and is all i need) 5. I keep a 250 food spending budget a month. I never pass it and its enough for me to eat out with friends 1 a week or buy a bag of pistachios and dried mangos once a week. 6. Im naturaly non materialistic, i focus on the important goals, the future i want and were i want to be is my DRIVE. Its differnt if your working at the rigs. This is a truckers point of view. All i do is load sand, and then drop it off at the rigs.

You nailed it at the end; if you are a young DISCIPLINED man you could give yourself a fantastic head start in life by heading to North Dakota/Bakken. I'm in my 40s and spent 5yrs and walked away with $300k cash and descent investments. I headed there never making more than $20/hr and never changed my lifestyle by getting absorbed by those fat checks. In fact, that was by far my richest earning moment in life AND the most impoverished living experience. YOU must embrace that fact if you intend on taking advantage of that North Dakota experience. Make no mistake about it though, North Dakota sucks! I call it a state factory; you go to that state to work, that's it. God Bless North Dakota and.....fuck North Dakota.

@@abdoulaye_diop For me it was; straight out of college starting at 85k/ year (back in 2004), not behind a desk 8 -5, great crews and life long friends, got to travel around Colorado, Wyoming, and Kansas. But to be fair, it's a grind. 1st 3 months was learning to be a field engineer (i have a degree in Elec. Eng. so nothing to do with oil and gas production), passing the quals to lead teams, traveling to different locations, long days of getting experience out in the field and long nights studying for their tests. It's a young mans kinda of work and I can't imagine doing it now with a family. If you were to go in as a geologist you'd have an advantage. Went to work for the big red devil in 2012. Job paid 12.90 an hour. We usually worked 110 to 125 hours. 29 gone and 13 home. My off days paid 9 hours per day 6 days per week. They flew us from south miss. To midland and provided a man camp room. Many months we stayed out and slept in the trucks most of the month. Some had air and many did not. You are but a piece of machinery to the company. Most of us made about 80k per year. Big red pays less than most others but they absorb travel and room cost. Coveralls and boots too. Great job for the young and single. I needed and was grateful for the work due to the 08 bubble bust. Great experience to see the deserts of new Mexico and Texas.

My company had a division in Texas. Texas isn’t appealing either because they have they’re own extreme weather most aren’t used to. North Dakota paid more because the Bakken was blowing up with ALOT of real-estate to be used specially with directional drilling and coil. Texas is an old field with a million old wells. Pull a trailer down a lot of companies have spots. There is literally companies who will winterize your camper and as long as you keep some water going a bit we never had issues. I did my time in watford city, tioga, wild rose. The absolute cheapest way to work in the oil field in North Dakota is working for a company who has housing like drill rigs. Anymore companies got smart you get housing paid for you make less an hour.

I'm working for a drilling company in new town. In the boom they were paying a lot more but starting out as a roughneck now says you aren't going to make much more then $6000 or a month after taxes. It's still good pay but you need to put in a couple years of work to make much more. Drillers and tool pushers make less than 150k a year. Just don't want people to think they r going to walk into a 200k a year job.

Rule 1: Don't buy a 70k Oilfield badass truck that isn't worth shit in 10 years after you paid 150k plus for it. Rule 2: Don't waste your money on Food. Buy Groceries and budget. Rule 3: The roads are dangerous especially in the winter. Watch weather reports. The fog can be worse than you can imagine with literally 10ft visibility in front of your vehicle. I've been in white outs that went from clear skies to driving 5 mph with my door open to make sure i was in my lane within 5 minutes. Lots of idiot drivers. 4) Nobody is cockier and more full of shit than a Roughneck. Contrary to rumors, water haulers have the highest IQ because we like to get paid to watch everyone else work 😂. Haha. 5) If you are going to work on a rig, do drilling not workover. Workover is a lot more work and you have to be a team unit with your crew. Which means, if you get paired with an asshole crew, which a lot of them are, you are either going to sing their praises, kiss their ass, shit when they shit, drink when they drink, work 100 hour weeks while they party like idiots...and they run their mouths all day long. I mean, that's just the oilfield though. Best hope you get a good crew that isn't going to get you killed and teaches you something... Drilling rigs are 2 weeks on and 2 off so you can still have somewhat of a life which is important. Lastly, put a plan in place to work your way out of the oilfield. You can become a slave to this place.

You could go service rigging I'd recommend a straight rig instead of a slant rough necking on the ground is definitely a great way to get some experience, learn all the different danger zones and build stamina. And, if there was a serious incident it would hurt a companies bottom line. They have to bid on contracts and the number of incidents and the severity of them has a very big impact on whether or not they get the contract.
