Just to clarify a minor point at 23:30, Japan actually did have a parliament and a liberal democracy in the 1920s and 1930s. However it’s not a typical example of a fascist coup since it was largely lead by the military rather than a civilian political figure or party.

Japan was actually, briefly, a fairly progressive Liberal democracy for a short while prior to WW2, from what I remember. We need to bring up adoptive parents as a parallel to trans people. Mother and Father are terms used to describe both a biological and a social feature, which usually overlap, but not always. When people say "the left thinks women can have penises", the best response is, "do you think a mother can be a virgin? In the biological sense, mothers can't be virgins, but in the social sense, they absolutely can be. Trans women are like adoptive women, trans men, adoptive men. We are not delusional, we just recognize this very obvious distinction, and think "woman" and "man" are more useful when referring to the social feature, not the biological one." "Also, can you imagine having a whole political project so fixated on adoptive parents? Bringing them into the spotlight, harassing them as being 'not real parents', accusing them as being child predators? That would be psychotic!"
@ms.aelanwyr.ilaicos

Yeah, that's one of the strongest analogies. It works particularly well because parenthood as a concept is even more firmly rooted in biology than sex or gender. Thus, if parenthood can be socially reimagined, surely gender can be, too. Plus, it's very hard to take the position that adoption is a grotesque mockery of nature and remain credible in the eyes of a reasonable onlooker.

Japan did kind of liberalize, but it did so extremely rapidly from a feudal society. Honestly, a lot of their capitalists and government officials were the same as the feudal lords that governed just years prior. Regarding the difference in endurance and long-term persistence of facists compared to leftists, I think it's pretty easy, actually. I would suggest that it is mainly a question of motivation, specifically the level of selfishness that is involved. I don't think it's far-fetched to say that (perceived) self-interest and selfish feelins is at the core of the motivation behind most facist political standpoints. Authoritarianism, religious fundamentalism, racism, sexism, all of these are about securing as much advantage for the in-group (in reality, the kleptocratic clique at the top) as possible and enforcing their will on everyone else with no regard for them. This is why facists will go to such lengths, it's all about gaining power (or at leaast, the illusion of it) for themselves. They are trapped in a power-fantasy where there really only is one way to attain their desired goal. Most left-wing ideas (and activists) by contrast are based on compassion and a care for more than the self. This doesn't at all mean that there are no selfish assholes among leftists, but they DO have a tendency to drift to the right over time (like a certain "comedian" who does not deserve to be named). There is also a much larger element of self-criticism and introspection in the left than among facists. In combination this means that the left is both more prone to disagreements and infighting, which can easily lead to disillusionment and a loss of motivation. It is also much easier for leftists to redirect their commitments in new directions, since there are many worthy causes when it comes to helping people. This is in stark contrast to facism. There really are no alternative ways to gain the type of power and advantage facists covet, and it is really, really difficult to become disillusioned with self-interest.

There are also unequal outcomes for when fascists get their way vs. when progressives get their way. With the rise in progressivism, the fascist doesn’t lose any rights. With the rise in fascism, the progressive loses everything, even their lives. There’s an imbalance in the world that greatly favors fascism, and it’s easy to become a doomer if you actually give a shit about human rights.
@FelisImpurrator

Technically, it's the other way around. Fascists are hyper-collectivist, disregarding individual freedoms and desires in favor of consolidating power in the state and the ingroup. They'll act against their self-interest in the name of falling in lockstep behind state authority and sacrifice individual identity to the collective. On the flip side, socialists and anarchists are actually the most motivated by self-interest. They recognize that the ideal environment in which to maximize the individual's well-being and agency is one where mutual prosperity is secured and a given. Remember that "from each according to ability" precedes "to each according to need"; this means that people should contribute what they are best at to the degree which they're capable of doing so, which necessitates realization of individual potential. The catch is that the messaging is inverted. Fascists sell their ideology as so-called individualism and pursuit of the idealized Ubermensch... because their ideals are basically just a projection of the ego of the supreme leader; it's not each person's glory, but the glory of the one on top, and others simply have to partake in its reflection. On the other hand, socialist imagery tends to gravitate toward superficial collectivism because, as mentioned, the freedom of the individual can only be built on the backbone of guaranteed mutual prosperity. In actual fact, the goal is to maximize each person's self-interest (actual self-interest, not perceived). Fascism is built on the bones of people too stupid (or abused and brainwashed into being complicit) to know what's best for them. That's why regimes like Stalin's, among others, were rightly considered anti-Marxist by people like George Orwell, a true socialist. Because their interpretation takes the aesthetics of Marxism and manifests fascism.

I don't think it has anything to do with whether a movement is motivated by self interest or high ideals, all movements motivated by both, the only difference is where you start. You can keep what you have (conservatism) or you can advocate for more (progressive). While leftist goals are egalitarian and collectivist, that is ultimately in everyone's interest. There is more disunity and introspection with leftist movements because they lack the support frameworks and clear objectives of the current system. But you're right, leftist movements are ultimately less effective than facsist ones because the nature of fascist power is fundamentally opposed by leftists. They aren't playing the same game

It's not about power at all. It's more about competence. If progressive and leftist ideas were so "good" for the majority of Americans, they wouldn't have to be so authoritarian and disingenuous in their methods of decisions that goes against their views. I'm sure people that are pro life over the age of 50 have been that way but did not feel like our democracy came to an end when the first decision of roe vs Wade was made years ago. They didn't say the court was illegitimate. But these crybabies lose a few decisions and their life along with non-existent rights have ended. It's ridiculous and so childish. This is also a quick way to find out if they just really want more trans people dead, and are therefor not worth associating with. Its always been this way lol Back in the day when atheist debate videos were popular, I'd always see an ad for a Christian or Muslim dating website before an atheist video lmao Its because atheists labelled their videos in a "religion" category for search purposes, or add labels including whichever religious branch they were talking about, and so did the people creating those ads, since they were also targeting the "religion" or "christian" or "islam" interest. So when you watch videos with the "politics" label you're likely to get ads targeting "politics" as well. Or if someone is rebutting a conservative and puts metadata for conservative somewhere in there, you're also likely to get pro-conservative ads too. And its the conservatives who are most obnoxious about shoving their nonsense down everyones throats, and they're the ones more likely to create a bunch of annoying ads, so chances are you'll see them most often.

My change of mindset came from spending time around progressive friends, listening to how things actually worked, and realizing how my parents mindset and ideals were hurting me. It wasn’t a sudden wake up call, it was a slow progression over the course of 2 or so years. And I will admit, I always had a lingering feeling of unease about what my parents believed that probably helped. To the point on doomerism: I think a lot of it has to do with messaging. We generally have optimistic goals, but often message in a way that feels counterproductive, such as how much is made clear how fucked over we are in this system. That awareness can be a real drag, in a similar fashion to climate grief and recent generations like us zoomers have constant anxiety over the future because of it. If we had rhetoric in a way that conservatives can: join together as big stronk and beat the shit out of capitalism, Grug Style, we might have better motivation. I dunno, just my two cents. I think being able to appeal to more basic instincts and feelings (like cooperation and empathy) can bring us farther than consistently talking about how horrid the right wing has turned America into. Why aren't we doing Civil War-esque left wing patriotism against these fascist nonces? Down with the traitors, UP WITH THE STARS!

I love the sentiment. People on the left, we need to RECLAIM OUR HISTORICAL SOCIALIST LEADERS! They have stolen these leaders from us and warped their thoughts and ideas to suit their needs. Our new “Common Sense by Thomas Paine” IS the book “The “S” Word by John Nichols.” Reclaim our history!

don't worry - keep speaking up, everybody. it is going to be the plurality and majority of individuals of all cultures that make up the human race, speaking and acting as unified will, who will achieve the course correction we need. be an example, speak up to educate after your own education, and keep optimism foremost in your spirit. remember, your actions do matter; the world is just made up of all of you, and what you do every day. it represents individuals' decisions on a macro scale. yes, the current systems are entrenched against us. but those systems are enacted by us every day. keep spreading these messages, and living by them. we gotta start working on actual improvement instead of black-pilling generation after generation with the tired old trope of "this is just the way humans are". this goal most likely won't be achieved in our lifetimes, and that's ok - it's doing the groundwork in terms of ideas and discourse that's important, to enable organization and planning for this kind of societal evolution. we all will reach critical mass, and it's worth doing even if we don't arrive in your lifetime. i love you all.

I'm not american so this might not be as relevant, but in regards to leftists(especially western ones) giving up I think it's a matter of seeing the depravity of the guys in front of them that does it, usually when any political movement is met with this much hostility and dishonesty up to the point of semi violent suppression there's always the option of violence(the Iranian mujahedin which were a group of muslim communists are one example) but in modern discourse it's accepted that violence is not an answer, so when your opponent lies and keeps enacting their own violence while denying it's existence at the same time it's not that unexpected to think that there's nothing you can do to change their mind and when you can't change somebody's mind and they do everything in their power to make sure you can't do your own thing the only thing left is violence or something similar and most normal decent people (correctly) shy away from that.

Are you saying cycling isn't safe anymore because of the cognitive problems? To be fair, the issues you describe would seem to be unconnected, directly at least, to the phenomena addressed in this video. More productively, what kind of Medicaid benefits exist in TX? Even if those benefits are unexpanded in your state, if you are unemployed you should nonetheless be eligible for what coverage does exist, and that may even include some mental healthcare like therapy. There should be a website for the TX healthcare exchange, which will provide you with information about how to apply for medical assistance, and with phone numbers you can call to get more information.

Hey man I'm from Georgia and although there are some mental health services here (cause I live in a college town) they are criminally underfunded and understaffed. My last therapist there got another job due to how poorly the state run service here pays 😕 You could (if you are able to save up a little for it or ask for a favor) get one appointment at a psychiatrist and explain your situation. The fact that you have that issue with memory might make you eligible for disability if that's something you would consider. It's not guaranteed, and it's not an immediate fix by any means but with how much harder your issue would make it for you I think you might have a case. You can always opt out when you recover. Also this one might seem obvious but I'd feel bad if I didn't suggest, you could call a psychiatrist/therapist's office ask if there are any state-run mental health services in your town. If there truly isn't any then I would ask for the closest one in a different town or try to find one on google maps. Last thing I can think of is looking at all the closest potential employers around you, and asking to speak to either an owner or hiring manager, as far up the chain as you can. You could then say that you have these specific problems you're recovering from but am looking hard for a job and wanted to see if there's anything there I can do that doesn't require having to talk to people too much If your condition is too much of a problem for your job, then that simply makes your case for disability that much stronger. If you keep the job, then you just landed a job with an understanding boss. If you don't feel up to that, then a psychiatrist's recommendation for disability goes a long way. I hope any of that helps, and I'm sorry if it doesn't. Good luck!

If you do get a gun, I would strongly suggest a shot gun. The guns themselves and the ammo are ✨relatively ✨ inexpensive and great for home defense, as the ammo used is scattered and the individual bb’s won’t go through most walls or doors. They also don’t require pinpoint aiming since, again, the bb’s scatter and have a better chance of hitting your target. It’s also fun to shoot clays on the weekend for target practice.

A lot of people in the English speaking world tend to not know much about pre-fascist Japan besides the fact that it had an Emperor, but Japan in early twentieth century was actually quite similar to the Weimar Republic in that it was a progressive liberal republic that fell to a fascist coup.

I gotta entreat a little advice here, as a fella with pink hair & pronouns: it's tough for me to appear "legitimate" to certain people. I LOVE educating folks on trans stuff, believe it or not, *when they have an open mind about it*. My issue arises when I know I'm never going to change their mind. All the nervous adrenaline running through my system just sends me into a rage. And THAT'S when I hit them with the "ackshually, pink was considered a boy's colour before the Holocaust, you saying you agree with Hitler?" and then any good standing that conversation had is over, & they're just as assured as ever that we're a bunch of nagging ninnies trying to make everyone memorize a bunch of pronouns. I don't get into shouting matches, mind you, but I'm firm & I don't let people just ignore what I said, & lemme tell ya, people like to pretend they're totally the wokeest people on the planet when you challenge their basic empathy & morality. But I'm tired of being a jackass. Maybe I'm too autistic & socially awkward for this kinda crap, but I can't just sit around & let nothing happen. What am I, a Democrat? I always tried to play Devil's advocate in my entire debating career, but there's absolutely no correct points from the American Republican party that I feel my patience indulging these fools rapidly draining to the point where I just wanna yell over them about how wrong they are. I KNOW the left has an issue with looking like a huge downer & a bunch of know-it-alls? But DAMN, dude, look at what we're up against. I'm so fucking tired.
